Scalloped Sweet Potatoes

This is such a fantastic side dish for any meal. Since sweet potatoes cook faster than white potatoes, they are cut thicker so they will be fully cooked when the dish comes out of the oven. -- posted by Chef mariajane

Pumpkin Pudding With Candied Ginger Whipped Cream

I love to add some port or dark spiced rum (Zacapa or Zaya), to the pudding and/or the topping!

Serve with a tawny port such as my favourite Taylor Fladgate 20-year or a higher-end sipping rum such as Zacapa or Zaya.

The pudding can be made up to a few days in advance, but wait to mix the topping until you're ready to serve. -- posted by GoldsmithLissa

Cauliflower Steaks With Cauliflower Purée

Originally found on Epicurious, great easy recipe. Few ingredients, big payoff: Large "steaks" are cut from a head of cauliflower, sautéed until golden, then baked until tender. They're served over a simple puree made from the cauliflower florets. An impressive first course, this can also be a lovely side. Just sear two mahi-mahi fillets in butter and place them alongside the cauliflower. -- posted by jwith12

Sweet Braised Whole Scallions (Molly Stevens)

This would be a fabulous, easy side dish for Thanksgiving. "As the scallions braise, the sweet anise flavor of the tarragon mingles with their oniony juices, giving the whole dish a candy-like sweetness. If you can’t find fresh tarragon, or simply don’t care for its taste, substitute fresh parsley or omit the herb altogether. The scallions will still taste delicious." Recipe is from "All About Braising: The Art of Uncomplicated Cooking" by Molly Stevens. -- posted by blucoat

Easy Pizza Pancakes (Thick Crepe Style)

Some of my friends from Rio will remember when the heavy rain flooded our apartment and we spent hours trying to scoop up and drain the water away. None of us had eaten so half way through, ankle deep in water (!), I devised these lovely little pizzas to give us all a break and a laugh as I'm flipping the pancakes!. I think they taste so good because the 'base' is fresh. Feel free to add extra toppings as you wish but I think they're great plain. Don't expect to be able to pick these up, you need to eat them with a knife and fork. -- posted by robd16

Spinach Mushroom and Artichoke Soup- Fast and Figure Friendly

Sarasota's Easy Leftover Turkey, Leek and Potato Tart

A unique way to use up turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. Add a couple of fresh ingredients and this goes together in no time. Now, if like many, who have steamed green beans for Thanksgiving, try reinventing them by a quick saute with shallots, mushrooms, and a little balsamic vinegar. Just 4-5 minutes and you have a great way to use up those beans and it makes a great side dish with this. And don't forget to use up that pumpkin pie in a parfait with honey whipped cream, walnuts and ginger snaps. -- posted by SarasotaCook

Spice-Kissed Pumpkin Pie

I usually don't like pumpkin pie but I had to try this one and I loved it. It's different with the hazelnuts and coconut milk. From the Heidi of the blog 101cookbooks.
10 in 10 Diet Cabbage Soup

This soup is vaguely a borscht, with a sweet & sour tang and a red-tinged broth. I've settled on tomato paste as cheap and the right tomato-iness for us. I used to freeze cubes of crushed tomatoes and use five or so in a batch of soup.
Zanzibari Chutney (Part of Zanzibari Pulao/Pilaf)

Growing up in Dubai there was a tiny restaurant my father would occasionally take us to. They were famous for & only served Zanzibari Pulao along with a cold glass of the drink Tang. After moving out of Dubai the only option I had to still eat the pulao was to come up with something at home. After many trials my mom came up with this chutney recipe. This chutney is part of the Zanzibari Pulao that I have posted. Pakistani Bhagaare Chawal (Stir Fried Rice) or Zanzabari Pulao recipe #282570
Soon I'll post Zanzibari Fried Fish's recipe as well.
Already warning people with low tolerance to spices. This chutney is spicy & sour . It can be stored in an air tight jar for 2 weeks in the fridge. -- posted by Bint e Naeem

Fresh Corn Custard Cups

Wait! I know this sounds bizzare but you must trust me when I say that this tastes wonderful! Think about it like this, we put sugar on our cornflakes and we eat sweet popcorn and this is really just one step past that. Once you get over the idea, you'll be glad you made this I promise. The natural starch in the corn thickens the custard naturally, the same way as processed corn starch does. It is usually served with roti/chapatti & yogurt or sometimes with Masoor Dal (lentil) here is the recipe of a basic okra curry that was passed down from my grandmother to my mom & down to me. It’s the tomatoes that give it a different taste compared to the other recipes posted so far.

Note if you want to make "Bhindi Gosht" (Okra curry with mutton) after frying the onions add mutton, let it cook on medium low heat for 20 minutes, then follow the rest of the recipe. You can also add 1/2 cup water to make it a little saucy. -- posted by Bint e Naeem

Hobo Potatoes

I got this recipe from my mother-in-law. This has a bit of a potato au gratin texture, but without the cheese. The edges are a little chewy. I love how easy this is to make and how filling it comes out. It is very good comfort food. The measurements are rough as I eyeball it. Adjust to your preference. -- posted by arualanne

Sweet Potato Lentil and Lime Soup

Made for cold weather, this hearty warming soup hits all the right spots. The lime, mint and Greek yoghurt are essentials and compliment the earthy flavours of the garlic, cinnamon. ginger lentils and sweet potatoes perfectly.
Cheats Scouse

This is quick, easy, healthy and cheap to make and is sure to sooth on a cold winters night. Serve with lots of pickled beetroot or red cabbage. Traditionally made with leftover meat from a sunday roast, Scouse is a traditional regional stew from Liverpool, UK.
Maryland Chicken

Another Dixie meal that combines sweet and savoury elements, who would have thought that banana and chicken would work so well together. Everything originally would have been deep fried in batter but I prefer this slightly lighter version. The sweetcorn fritters are a must and can be made whilst the chicken is cooking in no time. I'm not sure if this recipe comes from the state of Maryland, USA but to be honest I don't really care!
Amazing Cabbage (You'll Want to Eat a Whole One)

This is a Jamie Oliver's idea so I can't take credit for it, as much as I'd like to. Don't be put off by the anchovies in the butter, it doesn't taste fishy and you can't detect them at all. In fact, you can't really detect the rosemary or garlic much either for that matter. They act more like a seasoning as opposed to a flavouring and I promise you this is seriously the best cabbage you'll ever eat! Cook the cabbage as described and adapt the recipe to make as much or as little of the butter as you like, the rest can be stored in the freezer for those 'gotta have my cabbage' moments. Ha ha, you say that now. . . . -- posted by robd16

Whipped Sweet Potatoes and Bananas With Honey

From Tyler Florence, Ultimate Thanksgiving. I like the idea of using banana and honey instead of sugar for the sweetness. I can't stand those yucky, overly sweet sweet potatoes that we here in the south usually serve. This is a better option for those of us who enjoy sweet potatoes without all the sugar. I did retain the pecan topping but you can probably cut it back to 1/2 cup of brown sugar.
Moist Pumpkin Spice Bread

This may be the most delicious pumpkin bread recipe I've ever baked. I came up with this for my brother's 18th birthday and it has been devoured in just two days. I believe the applesauce in the recipe is what makes it so ooey-gooey moist. It's also low in fat as the applesauce replaces the oil that would normally be used. The recipe makes two loaves, one of which can be frozen or given to a friend. -- posted by EntirelyEmily

Thanksgiving Pumpkin Blondies

From The Best 50 collection of cookbooks. This is straight out of the Brownies and Blondies edition. A little of this goes a LONG way! Not really a blondie by my standards, but it passes off as an interesting bar-type dessert. PLEASE NOTE: Because most people are not really used to tasting molasses, it may take a few bites to fall in love with this recipe. I did not like it at all when I first tried it. But, after giving it a second bite, I found I can't get enough of it. This seemed to happen with EVERYONE who tried it. So, please, before giving an unhappy review, try it again. If you find that the molasses is just too much to handle, try cutting the topping ingredients in half. It really does make a lot of topping as it is. I hope you enjoy this! -- posted by the_cookie_lady

Tom Yum Soup With Vegetables

Thai Tom Yum soup is a delicious and aromatic Thai soup. I crave this soup ALL of the time. I have brought this to parties and people always rave about it. Now friends always ask me to make it whenever we're getting together. I made it completely from scratch for years. A few years ago, I started using the paste and prefer it. I find it to be more flavorful.
Tom Yum is distinctly known for it's hot and sour flavor. My version maintains the distinct hotness and sourness of the traditional soup but it also is slightly sweet and spicy. I make a side of jasmine rice and serve it with the soup.
I noted the ingredients and amounts I use however, I encourage additions, deletions and alterations. I don't care for the mushrooms and I love broccoli which may come as a surprise to some. Broccoli is not a traditional component of this recipe but it's healthy and I find that it goes nicely with the broth. Play and have fun! -- posted by Proserpine79

Sweet and Savory Squash Stew

This recipe combines some of the most iconic tastes of fall--butternut and acorn squash, sweet potato, apple--in a sweet and savory pot of deliciousness. I recommend serving with a dollop of sour cream. And cornbread.

All amounts for seasonings are estimates--I tend to season as I go and according to taste; I have a feeling these are underestimates. I will be sure to update the next time I make this with adjusted amounts. I used a smoked (pre-cooked) ham steak for this; I have also made it with other kinds of ham, with turkey sausage, and without meat altogether with positive results. -- posted by Tlharin

Fabulous Fajitas

This recipe is based on wonderful fajitas served at a small authentic Tex-Mex restaurant near where I used to live. I have used this with both chicken and steak, flank steak or skirt steak, and it works great. I also mix a batch of the dry spices together and use a tablespoon or so when I make fajitas. The red onions, while not traditional, add a nice color to the fajitaas, but sweet yellow onions are more traditional. Note that the preparation time listed includes time to marinate. -- posted by UrbanDesiMommy

Seasoned Chicken in a Light Wine Sauce

This is a healthy way to add a little flavor to chicken without all the fat, and just a little salt. You can substitute or add any vegetable that sautes well if you don't like onions, but the mushrooms are a must. Pairs well with steamed veggies and/or rice. You could add a little cornstarch slurry while the liquid reduces to help thicken the sauce, but I like to keep it on the light side. Using a lid on the non-stick skillet is a key step to the recipe. It keeps the Chicken from drying out. -- posted by Cyril

You could add a little cornstarch slurry while the liquid reduces to help thicken the sauce, but I like to keep it on the light side. Using a lid on the non-stick skillet is a key step to the recipe. It keeps the Chicken from drying out. -- posted by Cyril

Crock Pot Chinese Pork Stew

This Crock Pot Stew is easy to make and allows the meat to become very tender while cooking. It has a Chinese taste due to the fish sauce and goes great with rice. -- posted by ChrisI

Shrimp Egg Rolls

These are so wonderful! They are my new favorite food. I told my mom I was craving egg rolls and this is what she came up with. And they are so much easier to make than most egg roll recipes plus they consist of normal ingredients so you don't have to break the bank. -- posted by TheFountain5
