Mama Lu's Broccoli Casserole

I got this recipe years ago from a Jane and Michael Stern cookbook that featured recipes from restaurants around the country. The original recipe was for a smaller casserole and I doubled the recipe. We have it at every holiday meal. Mama Lu's is a southern restaurant that is located in Florida I believe (not sure of the city). I like this recipe because it's not like every other broccoli casserole. -- posted by yooper

The Famous Senate Restaurant Bean Soup

Whatever uncertainties may exist in the Senate of the United States, one thing is sure: Bean Soup is on the menu of the Senate Restaurant every day. The origins of this culinary decree has been lost in antiquity, but there are several oft-repeated legends. One story has it that Senator Fred Thomas Dubois of Idaho, who served in the Senate from 1901 to 1907 and sat as chairman of the committee that supervised the Senate Restaurant, gaveled through a resolution requiring that the bean soup be on the menu every day. Another account attributes the bean soup mandate to Senator Knute Nelson of Minnesota, who expressed his fondness for it in 1903. In any case, Senators, and their guests, are always assured of this hearty, nourishing dish. They know they can rely upon its delightful flavor and epicurean qualities. (Recipe from the Honourable and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, IV, U.S. Senator, West Virginia.) -- posted by Mille® ™

Grilled Shrimp With Polenta

Polenta, an Italian specialty now found on menus from coast to coast, is either served soft or cooled, then sliced and fried or baked. Chef Randy Windham's recipe for soft polenta topped with pesto-marinated grilled shrimp is comfort food elevated to a new level of flavor. For a hearty lunch or simple dinner menu, double the portions and accompany with a green salad, Italian country bread and a dish of oil-cured black olives.
I have never been satisfied with store bought or ranch dressing recipes. This one is thick, fresh tasting and doesn't have that "mayonnaise" flavor. Tastes very similar to that dressing from that famed "aussie" steak restaurant if you add paprika and cayenne to it.
The Lady's Cheese Biscuits & Garlic Butter - Paula Deen

At my former workplace, we had the Lady & Sons cater lunches for training seminars and these were always the first to disappear. This is from a recipe that ran in the Savannah Morning News a few years ago. The sharp cheddar is my preference, although the original recipe simply states "cheddar".
This is reportedly the recipe for the topping used on the famous Aiken, SC City Billiards "pool hall hot dogs", with a minor adjustment made on my part regarding the amount of onions used (original recipe states "4 medium onions"). It's a sweet and tangy mixture; I like it topped with lots of shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese. (I've made this with ground turkey and it tastes pretty fine, too!)
Durkee Famous Sauce Clone

This wonderful tasting, versatile sauce has been a secret ingredient in many southern recipes for as long as I can remember. It was originally patented in 1857. It is used in potato salad, cole slaw dressing, remoulade sauce, egg salads and various other salad/dressing recipes. We love it spread on bread for turkey sandwiches. While the "real deal" is still available at grocery stores in southern states, I understand it is becoming very difficult to find elsewhere. I suspect it will eventually become one of those extinct products that we will reminisce some day. I found several copycat recipes on the net but this one works best for me. -- posted by Susie in Texas

Kentucky Hot Brown

Chef Fred K. Schmidt at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, created The Hot Brown sandwich in 1926. In the 1920s, the Brown Hotel drew over 1,200 guests each evening for its dinner dance. The band would play until late, and when the band took bread, around midnight; people would retire to the restaurant for a bite to eat. Bored with the traditional ham and eggs, Chef Schmidt, delighted his guests by creating the Hot Brown. -- posted by Dropbear

Cocoa Cola Cake

YEAH!!!!I finally found my recipe for Coke Cola Cake. Apparently I originally found it and then re-found it on All Recipe submitted by Ellen Champagne or maybe not. It is a wonderful cake, moist and chocolately. And it does not even remotely taste like a cake from a mix. Just as good as Cracker Barrel's. -- posted by mandabears

Alabama White BBQ Sauce #2

This traditional Alabama Barbecue Sauce uses mayonnaise as its base rather than tomato sauce, vinegar, or any of the other traditional barbecue sauce bases. Like many barbecue sauces you want to apply this only at the very end of your grilling or smoking. It will breakdown and separate if it is heated too long. Use this sauce on chicken and turkey. It is also good on pork. Alabama White Barbecue Sauce has a tangy flavor that is a great addition to grilled foods. -- posted by Barbarella Rachelle

Ben Franklin Five and Dime Store Loose Meat Sandwich

Back in the 1960's there were the old Ben Franklin Five and Dime Stores and most of them had a lunch counter with swiveling stools. They also had a might fine little sloppy joe type sandwich which they sold for 23 1/2 cents. One day I asked the girl behind the counter how she made the great little sandwiches and she told me, so I wrote it on one of the napkins. I found the old napkin last week as I was looking through some old files. The little hamburgers were really a treat and the place was usually packed with customers enjoying them. So here is that special recipe, just as the girl told me back in the 1960's. I adjusted the amounts down to a smaller size, but that is the only change I made. -- posted by Auburndale Ray

This recipe comes from a Texas cookbook called The Texas Experience. I've lost the book since moving, but had some favorite recipes written elsewhere. I make this every year at Christmas as it is so good.
I use toasted, chopped pecans or walnuts.
