Protein Smoothie

I had gastric by-pass 4 years ago. Some things just do not digest well therefore getting all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients your body is supposed to have can be difficult. I discovered a smoothie shoppe close to my office but I soon found out their smoothies can be high in calories and sugar - if you aren't careful and do your research. So I bought a smoothie making for home and make my own.
Nutritional Chart shows 0 calories, it does have calories - approximately 475 as listed below. -- posted by FoodieAtHeart

Delishious Healthy Morning Start!!!

I followed the diet "Fit for Life" by Harvey Diamond. It was a great diet that worked with the science of individuals' bodies. The diet suggested only eating fruit until noon...so that's what I did. For over 3 months I was absolutely amazed with the results and energy I recieved from following it. Life, however got busy....that's when my mom and I came up with this recipe. It's easy to make and you definitely get all your servings of fruit in one easy way to consume it...not to mention how DELISHOUS it is!!!!!! -- posted by Suzzy Q.

Banana Cream Pie Smoothie

A higher-fiber alternative to plain milk, this smoothie doubles as a smart breakfast or a milk shake-like treat. One serving of the smoothie contains 315 milligrams of calcium, roughly the same amount as a glass of milk. Freeze and store extra bananas in zip-top plastic bags so you can whip up this smoothie in a flash. -- posted by mj Sergent

Banana-Berry Smoothie

Sip this power breakfast which boasts more than 300 milligrams of calcium while getting ready for work or on your way there. A scoop of powdered milk boosts the calcium contributed by the yogurt and the calcium-fortified orange juice. Additional nutritional benefits come from potassium-rich banana and antioxidant-rich berries. Frozen berries ensure a thick, creamy consistency, but you can also use fresh ones. Other frozen fruits, such as peaches or mangoes, work well, too. -- posted by mj Sergent

Saucy Smoothie

This goes down smooth as silk. My son hadn't been feeling well for a few days and didn't want to eat as his throat was very sore. It is the end of the week so my pantry was a bit bare. I put together these ingredients and it did go down very easily, sweet and smooth. I don't think we will be waiting for someone to be sick to try this out again. It is very sweet so if you don't like sweet you may want to leave out the syrup. -- posted by GaylaV

Flax Berry Smoothie (W/Spinach - Shhh,they Won't Know!)

This is a great way to slip healthy spinach and flax seed meal into your loved one's diet. It is healthy and satisfying and you will benefit from the probiotics (yogurt), antioxidants (berries), omega-3's and fiber (flax meal), potassium (banana) and the numerous benefits of spinach (to name a few - vitamin K, A, C, B2, B6, E, folate, iron, calcium, potassium & fiber). Also by combining the berries (Vitamin C) with the spinach (iron) you are allowing for more absorption of iron from the spinach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinach). I have this about an hour before my morning workout. -- posted by Emily Elizabeth

Power Breakfast Smoothie

A fortifying healthy smoothie that will get you going on a busy morning. I usually just throw this all together and make one big smoothie that satisfies me until lunch, but I will try and estimate portions for the other Zaarites. :)

You can use a combination of berries, I usually use strawberries but sometimes I will make a blueberry and banana shake, or strawberry and banana.

**I had to use "frozen strawberries" and "orange juice" so Recipezaar would take the nutritional info but you can use any berry or juice you like. This can be easily customized to fit your tastes. -- posted by The Tiny Chef

" Greens to Go" Smoothie

This is from Nancy Campbell from Above Rubies magazine. "The chlorophyll in greens combats tumor growth; it works on the adrenal glands, purifies the lymph nodes, unclogs the arteries and enriches the blood. It protects against radiation. Chlorophyll is only one of the many benefits of greens. It also provides a large gamut of vitamins and minerals, phyto-nutrients and colon cleansing cellulose.

It is blended so smoothly that even babies starting solids and toddlers who can't chew up greens can swallow these power foods and not gag. The cellulose is broken down and the greens are so easily digested that they begin to assimilate even while still in their mouth." You might need to play with the greens amount to get the right amount of sweetness. I added more fruit to cut the greens taste and would use only milk or kefir, instead of water next time. Try strawberry, raspberry, peach etc. I adjusted it just a bit. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Banana Latte

I often watch the show, "You Are What You Eat" with Gillian McKeith on BBC America. She was explaining this recipe on one of her shows and I decided I had to try it. I don't know if I got the exact measurements right, but I think I'm quite close. This is delicious and fast and easy. I think it makes an excellent quick breakfast if you have no time to eat, or makes a great snack too. ETA: I caught a rerun of the episode on which this particular recipe was featured and realized my error in naming the recpe "Banana Mocha Smoothie". The correct name for this recipe is "Banana Latte". Sorry for any confusion and no wonder, because mocha usually means chocolate is added, but it wasn't a part of the original recipe. The name "Banana Latte" makes more sense. I'm happy to note on one of the reviews that adding chocolate syrup to make this into a banana mocha works so well, though. :) -- posted by blancpage

Berry Smoothie

I was craving fresh fruit for breakfast and only had frozen, but I ran across this recipe in Taste of Home's Quick Cooking Sept-Oct '99. Patricia Mahoney of Presque Isle, Maine says it's difficult to get everyone to eat breakfast before school in the morning, and this gives a delicious and nutritious easy start. If fresh mint were in season, I would definitely throw in a few sprigs for flavor next time. Of course fresh fruit would be even more delicious, but this is a great winter alternative to beat the doldrums. YUM! -- posted by AmyZoe

We picked these items, each lending their own curative and anti-inflamatory properties. Together they make a sweet, tart sorbet with an amazing, beautiful ruby color.
Superfruit Smoothie

My absolute favorite smoothie - banana, kiwi, mango, peach, and clementine! When fresh fruit is in season, I like to play around with different combinations, but this is the one that I make the most. Not only does it taste absolutely amazing, but it is loaded with natural nutrition too; Vitamins B & C, potassium, dietary fiber, omega-3 F.A.s, antioxidants, calcium...much more wholesome (and yummier!) than a vitamin pill in my opinion. And because of the fiber and protein, it is filling enough to be a hearty snack or a meal substitute. Before you get too excited, a quick word of warning about the kiwi - if you eat too much at once it can make your mouth feel tingly and raw (yes... I've had this happen. I can't help myself!) I hope you like this smoothie as much as I do! :) -- posted by Oenophilly

Sunshine Tropical Smoothie

Made this for breakfast today from stuff I had on hand. Freezing over-ripe bananas is a great way to always have them on hand for breakfast smoothies, and it's another great use for bananas that are beginning to turn brown other than the ol'standby: banana bread! Simply peel your over-ripe banana, break into pieces that will blend in your blender, and place in a ziplock freezer bag. They are ready to go! For this recipe, be sure to use coconut WATER, not milk, which gives this smoothie just the perfect "hint" of tropical coconut flavor. Coconut water has 15 times more potassium than that found in sugary sport drinks, and that it contains five key electrolytes. It is the water found inside the coconut after it has been filtered through the coconut's husk. -- posted by Kozmic Blues

My daughter loves these, and it's a great morning treat, especially before school, it helps get her moving! I let her choose what flavour she wants the night before, and bring it up to her while she's getting ready for School.
The key is the vanilla yogourt, it gives it a great flavour. -- posted by ~Leslie~

Yogurt Breakfast Smoothie

I make one of these shakes for breakfast almost every morning. Sometimes I make extra for a quick snack mid-morning too. The intent of this is something filling, but healthy.

Sometimes I will sometimes mix in 1t of some kind of protein powder (e.g., whey powder) if I need the extra filling nature of protein. Be mindful of how much protein powder is added as it can make the shake very filling -- I used to to 1T but that was far too much.

As a note, I used to mix with a hand blender wand. I found that did not give the smoothie the same fluffiness, but it was passable. -- posted by John W
