Here is a refreshing smoothie-style beverage that you can whip up in almost no time. The yogurt base gives it a smooth texture, and if you use all the blueberries, (fruit and juice) you'll have a more intensely colored "explosion".
Oatmeal Date Shake

After a very satisfying sampling of Jonesy's crockpot oats http://www.recipezaar.com/No-Mess-Crock-Pot-Steel-Cut-Oats-322107, I found myself with a pair of dilemnas: what to do with the leftover oatmeal, and a hankering for a vegan date shake. Oatmeal in the shake? It turned out amazing, and though these measurements are approximate, they're as close as I ever get to measuring. -- posted by Gianni #23

Troy's Frosty Fruit Smoothie

This frosty non-dairy delight is the standard breakfast in our home every weekend year-round. Frozen fruit (no sugar added) makes for convenience and frostiness. The fresh bananas give it its thick, creamy texture. Couple this smoothie some almonds or pecans on the side, and I suspect this must be a taste of heaven. It makes a blender full and tastes best when made fresh. If you happen to have any leftovers, pour them into freezer pops for a healthy and yummy snack the kids will love. Be creative and use whatever fruits you happen to love. Measurements are approximate, we just fill up the blender. :) -- posted by Southernhopsing

Banana Almond Date Soy Smoothie

This vegan smoothie is amazingly rich, creamy, filling, and healthy. It has a nice texture to it from the almonds and a natural sweetness from the banana and dates. I like that there is no refined sugar added or any animal products, all good for us and the planet. I like using a frozen banana to make the drink cold, but room temperature works well too. If you want to freeze bananas, peel them before freezing. Peeling frozen bananas doesn't work! And place them separated in the freezer so they don't freeze together. -- posted by Chef #1363287

Five Food Group Smoothie

I came up with this recipe while trying to determine a healthy meal-replacement smoothie. I find most meal replacement recipes to be okay, but this is one that was surprisingly good. The orange juice was necessary because its strong flavour masks the spinach.

Be careful with the oatmeal. I think any type will work, but the steel cut variety will add a bit of crunch. -- posted by Fifitrixibelle

Berry Smooth Shake Smoothie

This is my favourite smoothie recipe! My kids love it, which is even better. Oddly, I originally found it on a website providing camping tips for the Freeman River campground in Alberta. I haven't yet figured out how to get my blender to work in my tent, but the recipe is a big hit in my kitchen at home. I've also done this with strawberries, which were tasty. The fruit doesn't necessarily have to be frozen. -- posted by Mctet

Raw Veggie Smoothie #1

Fruit smoothies have been so popular, but they also tend to be high in sugar. Why not switch to veggie smoothies? They provide so much nutrition and flavor without the sugar, naturally. I have been enjoying veggie smoothie variations for breakfast and it keeps me going until lunch time.
Banana Colada

I make this one without rum but you certainly can do this with. When you freeze the banana make sure to peel it first, otherwise you'll need a knife to get the peel off. All the other ingredients should be cold from the fridge. I use Zico for the coconut water but any unflavored young coconut water will do (NOT coconut milk - that's different) they come in convenient sized drink boxes and I use one per banana. -- posted by DoctorDave

Yogurt Breakfast Smoothie

I make one of these shakes for breakfast almost every morning. Sometimes I make extra for a quick snack mid-morning too. The intent of this is something filling, but healthy.

Sometimes I will sometimes mix in 1t of some kind of protein powder (e.g., whey powder) if I need the extra filling nature of protein. Be mindful of how much protein powder is added as it can make the shake very filling -- I used to to 1T but that was far too much.

As a note, I used to mix with a hand blender wand. I found that did not give the smoothie the same fluffiness, but it was passable. -- posted by John W

Berry Yoghurt Smoothie

I got this recipe from Sarah Owen's book "The Top 100 juices", published by Lifetime Distributers, Castle Hill, Australia.
Sarah Owen says "The super-nutrient vitamin C is needed for more than 300 diferent processes in the body, but it is easily wiped out by smoking, pollution and stress. Found in abundance in berries, vitamin C and other antioxidants help to quash the damaging free radicals that are associated with many illnesses."
The original recipe calls for natural bio yoghurt to be used, but any yoghurt will do.
This makes a large amount of smoothie, and if you're making it just for yourself, I'ld recommend halving it.
I hope you enjoy this healthy - but still tasty - smoothie :) -- posted by TALIA #3

Veggie Green Drink

I came up with this one night after a long drive from New York to Philadelphia. All I had eaten were french fries, so I was desperate to get some greens into me fast! This drink took care of the craving right away. The stevia helps to blunt the harsh taste of the veggies. If you want to make it a soup, use less water and perhaps add some spices instead of the stevia. Also, the yogurt can easily be omitted if you are vegan or have dairy issues; just use less water, -- posted by Jainene

Vegan Tofu-Based Green Tea Smoothie

Part of my Nasoya Madness series since I got tons of coupons for Nasoya Creations so I could get the tofu packs for almost nothing; and did lots of experiments most of which went well! I finally pulled my blender out of the closet again so I did lots of smoothies. This one is green tea, meant to have a powerful flavor. Feel free to add fruits, honey or other sweeteners, or make it non-vegan with yogurt or ice cream instead. -- posted by the80srule

Part of my Nasoya Madness series since I got tons of coupons for Nasoya Creations so I could get the tofu packs for almost nothing; and did lots of experiments most of which went well! This is a vegan-ized classic and you can vary it by using 2/3 cup plain soymilk mixed with 1 tsp cocoa powder for a subtler chocolate flavor.
Tink's Tropical Smoothie

Using my new (to me) VitaMix blender, I've been experimenting with smoothie options. I don't like milk, yogurt, or even much ice cream so the usual recipes don't appeal to me. However, at Jamba Juice I always sub pineapple sherbert in my drinks. To date, this is my favorite homemade smoothie & it's the closest to my favorite Jamba flavor. I'm posting it now so I don't forget what combination I used this time. :) It's a tropical, not too sweet, drink with all frozen fruit & juice. -- posted by **Tinkerbell**

Fall Harvest Smoothie

This recipe tastes like pumpkin pie in a glass! You will never know it is packed with veggies and fruits and "good for you stuff". Top with a little fat free whip cream for an extra-special desert. My teen-age daughter begs for this and sometimes we even heat it up for a thick soup. The key to this recipe is to make sure you use a blender/smoothie maker that has enough power to completely puree alll the ingredients; otherwise the squash will stay stringy. -- posted by RackeSRN

Breakfast or Dessert Smoothie

Smoothies are a great way to get your daily servings of fruit, vegetables and dairy. I have one of these with a veggie-laden breakfast bagel, and another one after dinner. Mixing up which types of fruit you use ensures a great variety of flavors as well as your full range of vitamins, so these things never get old! Try berries for your frozen fruit and something tropical for your fresh fruit, or use cherries and an extra banana with chocolate milk for a treat every now and then. -- posted by Alexander Mar
