African-Inspired Stew

The monstrously vague title doesn't do this stew justice; it uses the starchy richness of sweet potato and the fragrance of peanuts to produce a warm, hearty and delicious meal with different textures and aromas.
Pumpkin Biscotti With White Chocolate

I included them on my Christmas cookie platters this year, and everyone made a point of telling me how good they were. I found the recipe on the web. The raisins were my idea. Dried cranberries would be as good, if not much, much better. Or leave them out completely. Both light and dark brown sugar work beautifully, although I think I like the dark brown sugar version just a tiny tad more. I used good-quality white chocolate chips mixed with about 1/2 teaspoon of shortening for the drizzle. And if you can, use freshly ground nutmeg. Also, you can use up to 3/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries. Any way you try it, I think you'll love them. (Time does not include chilling time.) -- posted by Charmed

A friend shared a similar recipe with me some years back--I have seen it onthis site too. This is how I make it now.
Famous Fresh Blueberry Pie

I live in Florida and it is difficult to make a non-runny blueberry pie due to the humidity, but this recipe is perfect. I got this recipe through trial and error of 5 different published recipes. The filling is dense enough so that little loose liquid is present, but you still feel like you are biting into whole berries when you eat it. This fixed my problem of getting a pool of liquid in the bottom of my pie shell. I recommend using only fresh blueberries.
Use a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate. Regarding the crust, the store-bought frozen crusts did not work properly for me. They either didn't bake on the bottom or resulted in an overflow of pie liquid into the bottom of my oven. I recommend the Pillsbury brand rolled pie crust dough found in the refrigerator section of the grocery store (by the biscuits/crescent rolls). These bake nicely, are easy to work with, and have an appropriate amount of moisture. Of greatest inspiration for the filling was from http://www.pickyourown.org/blueberrypie.php -- posted by MerryD

Delicous and different scones with pumpkin, pecans, and cinnamon chips; this recipe was inspired by chef #242729's recipe #397407, which I added oatmeal, whole wheat flour, maple extract, pecans, and cinnamon chips to, and also added a spiced sugar sprinkle on top. recipe #397407 has a wonderful recipe in it for honey butter; I highly recommend it if you like butter on your scones!
Southern New Year's Day Soup

This wonderfully healthy collards and black-eyed pea soup by Sarah Cooper is a natural for New Year's Day. It started as a Cuban-style collards soup that included bacon fat, short ribs, Cuban sausage and ham hocks. Eventually Ms. Cooper decided to "de-fat" and change some of the ingredients to typical southern ones. The results are both aromatic and hearty, perfect on a cold day. To shorten prep and cooking time, you can use canned black-eyed peas, drained, rinsed and added towards the end of cooking time. Note: the recipe does not include soaking time for the dried peas.
My Mom's Jamaican Style Carrot Juice

I've looked up several carrot juice recipes and none were quite the same as the one my mother used to make for us growing up. It's most popular in the Caribbean around the holidays and can double as an adult beverage with the addition of your favorite alcohol (namely rum or guinness). It has a milk base with spices like vanilla and nutmeg, so it's definitely not a carrot juice for those looking for health, but hey, there are carrots involved!

Obviously you may need to double, triple or quadruple your recipe to make enough for several people, but I chose to explain it in relation to the blender's capacity, since a regular blender can't hold a 5 pound bag of carrots. -- posted by PunzeePuss

Horseradish Cheddar Beer Soup

This hearty soup is adapted from a recipe by Jenny Levison, owner of Souper Jenny, a Buckhead GA cafe that serves hundreds of bowls of soup a day from a menu that changes daily. Jenny's soup-making tips include "tasting everything as you go, using recipes as a guide. Read through them and substitute if you need to adapt to what you have on hand or your taste, and then try it!" She suggests using a dark beer like Guinness; others prefer pale ale ... but use a lighter beer if you'd like. I especially like the combination of horseradish, cheese and beer in the basic recipe and suggest adding spices, etc., to heighten flavors as desired. I've included Optional Additions that might give you some ideas but are not part of the original recipe. Another Golden Whisk winner as one of "The Best Recipes of 2009" awarded by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. -- posted by ninja

Winter Stew

Quick and easy, yet surprisingly delicious and hearty. Ground beef, potatoes, cabbage, broth and seasonings make this a fast and tasty dish sure to please your family! Serve with rolls or a nice crusty bread and sliced cheese.

I came up with this on one of those 'there's nothing in the house to eat' nights and the kids loved it! They named it Winter Stew because it was in the winter and it's been a winter staple on our menu ever since. We've also made this with Steak-Umm and it's great with that too! Just chop the Steak-umm into small pieces, cook, and remove from pan until adding the cabbage. -- posted by The Frugal Cheflady

Apple and Sausage Stuffed Butternut Squash

I discovered a recipe in Joy of Cooking and tweaked it a bit. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble of stuffing the squash. Personally, I'd just peel and dice the squash while it's raw, then roast the squash while sauteeing the rest of the filling, then toss the whole mess in a baking dish and be done with it. But, if you're into fancy presentation, go for it. :) No matter what, it tastes great, and it's nutritious. -- posted by kitchengrrl

Pumpkin (Butternut Squash) Pie

This recipe tastes like pumpkin pie, but is made with butternut squash, a sweeter gourd. It has a delicious oatmeal crust. I first made this recipe with my dad at thanksgiving. It was a big hit because everyone thought it was pumpkin.
Economical Beef Stew...

...but with no comprimise on the taste!
This is a lovely stew that I make all the time, as it happens I'm posting this as I cook it - a great winter warmer. Originally it was just my basic recipe, how mama used to make it, but after seeing various combinations over the years, I've changed it slightly and now I don't think it get's any better.
I use "casserole steak" for this and it's beautiful, and reasonably priced. You can use more expensive steak or cheaper cuts of beef, but this is already a lovely dish that is made at a very low cost.
I add homemade cheese & chive dumplings (I'll post my recipe after I have posted this one) and put them into the stew 30 minutes before the meal is ready.
Serves 4 - half the recipe for 2, half again for 1. -- posted by JinxTheCat

Boeuf Aux Carottes (Beef Stewed With Carrots)

A classic French peasant dish, the long slow stewing with carrots and pearl onions gives the meat an unexpected sweetness. Stew beef would be traditional and may be substituted, but the short ribs give it an additional unctuousness from their gelatin. Bone-in is preferable, but the nutrition information comes up wrong, so I listed the boneless first. (This could also be adapted for the crockpot - brown the meat, deglaze with the wine, then combine with the veg, spices and stock in the slow cooker. Cook on low 6 hours, then add carrot coins and cook another 2 hours.)
Tasty, Meat and Condiments Free Vegetable Soup!

Vegetable Soup! If you took away the egg which I myself forgot to add in anyway, it would even be vegetarian and vegan. Completely healthy without the need to add ANY condiments at all, unless you need a stronger taste. In that case you can add pepper/salt/soy sauce/meat/stock but this is for the health conscious who don't mind fresh tasting vegetable soup that is not strongly-flavoured. Enjoy! -- posted by Chef #1531879

Roasted Pork Chops With Caramelized Quince

This is a meal suitable for a cool, autumn dinner. The pork chops turn out moist and savory and pair nicely with the sweet and somewhat tangy flavor of quince. I like to eat a slice of quince with each bite of pork chop, as the combination reminds me of harvest season. If you are unable to find quince, two large apples would substitute well (any tart variety such as Macintosh, Granny Smith or Cortland). -- posted by MarthaStewartWanabe

Bread Pudding Ummm . . . Best Ever

I had never had Bread Pudding before I went to Vegas and had it at a buffet. Well, I fell in love. My obsession use to be chocolate, but since I've lost 52 lbs. I gave it up. NOW, my obsession has become THIS version of Bread Pudding. ( I have to be careful how much of this I make, so I don't gain all of that chocolate weight back!) I found this recipe on the "Momswhothink.com" website and I hope it is ok to post it here. This is true comfort food. Do not over bake or you will lose the eggy texture of the bread. The cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla are the key ingredients to the rich flavor of this dessert. I use french bread, and have even used dry bread that has been sitting around a few days. I even used wheat french bread once and it turned out great! The sauce is more a vanilla, butter, cream sauce. I usually make about 4 times (yes, that is what I said!) in order to smother the bread pudding. One recipe of it is just not enough. Ummm. Make the sauce while the pudding is baking and you will save time. You can also use a Hard Sauce if you would rather. (recipe # 102574 sounds like a good one.) Even if you have never tried Bread Pudding, be daring, and try it. I use to turn my nose up at it, and now, I cannot wait for an excuse to make it, again and again. Enjoy! -- posted by terriers2

The meat in this stew is the most tender I have ever had. This recipe is a combination of two that I put together, one which I liked the cooking technique and the other that I liked the flavor of.
Easy and Delicious Pumpkin Cake

A favorite fall treat that graces our Holiday tables. A favorite of my husband but then all my deserts are! Frequently requested by my coworkers and KYX retreaters. Has much the taste of pumpkin pie but can serve so many more people. A very moist cake. -- posted by Goat mom
