My Diabetic Country Cherry Scones

This is my own diabetic, lighter, version of a high fat and sugar scone recipe. It comes out simply delicious though and you won't have to apologize for them being healthy. I would well wrap and freeze any that you won't be using right away because they will have lost freshness the next day. -- posted by Annacia

The Best Cranberry Scones Ever

Recipe adapted from http://www.joyofbaking.com
This is our favorite scone recipe…the scones are very festive looking and very light in texture. Great for brunches! Another great thing about this recipe is that it’s easy and fast! I have managed to make this recipe in the morning before going to work (and I was on time) ;) -- posted by Rosealicious Chef

Oatmeal, Bacon, and Cheddar Scones

This is VERY loosely adapted from "(Relatively) Healthy Oatmeal Scones," kind of in the way that the movie "Clueless" is loosely adapted from Jane Austen's "Emma." It's a pretty simple recipe, and the scones have tasted quite good for as long as they last. (We haven't had them for more than 5 days, so I can't say how fresh they would be after that point.) -- posted by Mawrter

Sourdough Scones

Need to use up some starter? This recipe is perfect! Recently, I was looking for some way to use up excess sourdough starter rather than my usual go-tos for pizza crust and pancakes. I came up with this cinnamon-y recipe. My kids went nuts over it. I like it because it is not too sweet.

Cranberry White Chocolate Scones

A very tasty scone recipe that takes no time at all. Though the recipe calls for dried cranberries, I usually use a mix of dried cherries and berries for variety and often use more than the 1/2 cup called for. I also sprinkle turbinado sugar on the top for a bit of crunch. I specify cutting this in sixths, which makes a good size scone, but if you want smaller ones, try eighths and cut down on baking time. -- posted by chinasmom2000

Cinnamon-Cappuccino-Pecan Scones

This recipe is from the www.kingarthurflour.com website. "Dusky-dark from cinnamon and espresso, these scones are moist, crumbly, and packed with flavor." Tips from our bakers: To make now, serve later, prepare the scones up to the point where they're shaped and ready to go into the oven. Freeze on a baking sheet, then place in a plastic bag, removing as much air as possible, and store in the freezer for up to 2 months. To bake, place frozen scones on a baking sheet and bake for about 25 minutes in a preheated 400°F oven. -- posted by senseicheryl

This is very quick and easy. I love, love, LOVE scones, but I live alone, and it never seems practical to bake a whole recipe of them!
Blueberry Drop Scones

These are pretty easy and moderately healthy. I usually prefer triangles, but these are too sticky for that. Instead of adding flour, I make them drop scones. They aren't terribly sweet, so you may want to increase sugar to 1/2 cup. In trying to make a healthier version, I opt for a bit less. Also, it's fine to use only ap flour. -- posted by The Legal Chef

This dish is truly spectacular, perfect for a birthday, anniversary, Mother's Day, or any other special brunch occasion. My hubby discovered it in The New Basics Cookbook by Rosso & Lukins a few years ago. He had forgotten to get reservations at my favorite restaurant for Mother's Day brunch so he made this instead. It was better than my favorite restaurant! The original recipe says it serves 4. But it is very rich and it's enough food for 8 if you're serving with a side of fresh fruit. That cuts the calories and fat in half. -- posted by appleydapply

Very English Scones

Adapted from the Be-Ro home recipes book. As an english person I actually have no idea why scones are considered so British. But these are great with tea, a good breakfast food and look very pretty. You can use a variety of fruit fillings (my favourite is glace cherrys), to be honest I think any dried fruit will work as long as it's chopped to a good size (think around the size of a sultana). Also the recipe calls for 8oz self raising flour but when I made these this morning I used 4oz self raising, 4oz plain and 1 teaspoon baking powder and that worked wonderfully. The salt is optional, you can use margarine or butter and caster sugar is white granulated basically. Handle lightly for best results. It's a versatile recipe, enjoy. -- posted by SallyDe

Best Ever Scones -- from King Arthur Flour Website

I got this recipe from the KAF web site. After trying many scone recipes (including pre-bought mixes) - DH and I agree - this is the BEST recipe. It also has the least amount of butter than any of the others I've made. I also made mine with 2% milk. The first batch I made with 3/4 C dried cherries + 3/4 C white chocolate. Next time I'm going to try 1 C dried blueberries + juice of 1 lemon plus zest of one lemon. YUUUMY! I hope many of you enjoy these too! -- posted by Gidget265

Kellie's Basic, Go Ahead and Mess With It, Scone Recipe

This recipe started as a Lemon Glazed Scone recipe I found in a locally published recipe book, you know the kind sold as a money raiser with personal recipes from community members. Over the years I have adapted it many times. It has become the basic formula I use to make scones for tea with friends, family gatherings or on those mornings when I wake up and find we are out of bread and cereal. I add whatever I have in the cupboard or fridge. It has never let me down.

I encourage you to substitute and add stuff. The basic formula is mix together the dry stuff, cut in the shortening, stir in any lumpy additions then mix in the wet stuff. Have fun with it! -- posted by redplaid huf

Country Style California Olive, Thyme and Cheese Scones/Biscuits

This Californian olive recipe was sent to me by some lovely Bed and Breakfast guests (now good friends), who come from Temecula in California. They have stayed with us a couple of times now and love this part of SW France, and the food and wine! They grow olives and avocados, and regularly send me a selection of "California Growers" recipe leaflets, magazines and cookbooks, as well as a box of avocados every year! Always a treat! I have made these scones/biscuits several times now for appetisers and nibbles, as well as for picnics - they are delicious when eaten warm with fresh butter, mustard and ham. I make these with French olives, but I am sure my friends don't mind! -- posted by French Tart

Gourmet Scones - Add Any Fruit!

This is a basic gourmet scone recipe. In this recipe, I am using strawberries, but you can use a variety of fruit(s) (blueberry, strawberry-rhubarb, currant, raspberry, peach, pumpkin, etc).

Also, I tend to use splenda instead of sugar, since I'm splurging in the calorie department with the whipping cream!!!

Extra treat: add some chunks of cream cheese to the centre of each scone. Yummy!!! -- posted by McKinley's Momma

Singin' Hinnies - Northumbrian Tea-Time Griddle Cakes/Scones

Served warm and oozing with butter, these fabulous fruity griddlecakes make a great treat for breakfast or afternoon tea. I remember my grandmother making these when I was little; she lived in a very old stone cottage in Northumberland, and made these on a huge cast iron black griddle, or girdle as they were also called! We used to eat them hot from the griddle, with butter – in front of a roaring wood fire during the winter months. Singin' hinnies are a type of fried fruit scone or griddle cake, so called as they 'sing' and sizzle whilst cooking. 'Hinny' is a Northern term for endearment used especially to children - my grandmother used to call me "hinny". Similar to singin' hinnies are Northumbrian griddle cakes, also known as Gosforth gridies.
If you are making them for a children’s party or at Christmas, put coins that have been briefly boiled, then wrapped in greaseproof paper, in the middle of some of the singin’ hinnies. -- posted by French Tart

This lovely recipe for scones comes from the book "Simply Scones" by L. Weiner and B. Albright, which I got for my bday yesterday.
They taste great as is or spread with jam or clotted cream or even with some cheese melted on top. This I discovered when accidentally putting the cheese on the wrong scones before baking two different kinds. :) Hahaha... -- posted by Lalaloula

Buckingham Palace Scones

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"What better for this Buckingham Palace than a scone recipe from the lovely Kew Royal Botanical Gardens … Maids in Waiting…

Reportedly from the restaurant across from the Kew
The Maids in Waiting (I think that is the name) in KEW right across the street from the Royal Botanical Gardens ..they also make these wonderful little cakes called Maids in Waiting!!
otherwise, the Orangerie in Kensington."

The above was from my friend Katharine who came over to the house with more friends, to make me a post party brunch. What a kind and thoughtful present! We all had a wonderful time. I relaxed with one of my friends in the parlor, while the others cooked. This is why they called the scones, "Buckingham Palace Scones". -- posted by Sweetiebarbara

Buttermilk and Sour Cherry Scones for Afternoon Tea and Picnics

A delightful and EASY scone recipe that is perfect for a proper afternoon tea or to take on a picnic. Dried sour cherries are sensational and give a deep essence of cherry flavour to these scones, whilst the buttermilk makes them light and airy. This is a casual eating scone, easy to rustle up, and is perfect when eaten fresh from the oven with butter and maybe some cherry jam and cream too! If taking on a picnic, wrap the scone in a clean tea towel to keep it warm and pack the butter and jam separately. Makes one large scone, which is marked to split into wedges when served. -- posted by French Tart
