Vegetarian Portobello French Dip Sandwich

This incredible sandwich is the signature dish at the much-loved Seattle restaurant, Café Flora. The recipe is printed in the "Café Flora Cookbook". It's really a delicious sandwich and will please vegetarians and carnivores alike. It's easy to make vegan too. Start by preparing the mushroom essence (which can be made ahead of time). Unused French Dip Spread can be frozen. The mushroom essence (basically a reduced mushroom stock) can be made to add intense mushroom flavour to risottos, pastas, soups... -- posted by blucoat

Roast Eggplant With Walnuts

This wonderful appetizer, when served with warm pita, marinated strips of red pepper & tasty olives, can be a meal unto itself... or tucked into a pita with the aforementioned for lunch, a very nice lunch. Per the Times: "This Turkish recipe is from Paula Wolfert's upcoming book, "The Slow Mediterranean Kitchen," which will be published in October by Wiley. Wolfert notes that the slower the grilling, the smokier the flavor of the eggplant. She thanks Dr. Ayse Baysal for sharing the recipe."
Note: When large eggplants are roasted whole, you may notice black juices seeping out of the skin. If this happens, immediately slit the eggplant on one side and drain on a slanted board in the sink. -- posted by Buster's friend

Mediterranean Flat Bread Steak Sandwich

This is a great version of a traditional steak sandwich without being traditional. A tomato based relish with Mediterranean flavors and a red pepper mayonnaise, grilled skirt steak, and fresh spinach. Now, I happen to buy these great flat breads right from my market, but you can easily make your own - there are many good brands out there these days. You can also take a pizza dough and form into a small rectangle, brush with some olive oil flavored with grated onion, garlic, and seasoning and grill inside or out for just a few minutes and then remove. But this is meant to be a quick easy busy night dinner so I take advantage of the store bought for this. -- posted by SarasotaCook

Sarasota's Herb Portabello Sliders With a Kick

We all like to eat healthy and for me, I try very hard every week to eat light. I eat a salad every week, soup and sandwich (small portions), and one night if possible ... no meat or seafood. The key word is TRY, don't we all. There are some amazing vegetable dishes out there that are excellent. I had to cater a party for friends who are all heating healthy. NOT vegetarian, but no meat or seafood. Well I did a couple of sliders, but my portabello was the hit. It isn't too unique but the roasted vegetables, gooey cheese, herb aioli and marinade for the vegetables just made it perfect. -- posted by SarasotaCook

Vegetarian Croque Monsieur (Gourmet Grilled Cheese W/ Tofu Ham)

For those who don't like meat but want a totally rich French sandwich. French food was made for primarily meat lovers but I vegi-fied this classic. This is the ultimate French comfort food. (Served with a side salad instead of fries so I don't feel as guilty, haha.) Definitely not vegan friendly because I don't think soy butter and soy cheese could do this right, but you're welcome to try it as such. A great sandwich to have on a rainy day curled up with a good book. IMPORTANT NOTE: Nutritional info is inaccurate because I had to use real ham as an ingredient input or else the recipe wouldn't submit, says that "tofu sandwich slices" (and many other variations I typed) are not recognized in the database. Overall fat and calories are really lower than shown, unless you're a meat lover using real ham. I use Smart Deli brand ham-flavored tofu sandwich slices, they're really thin which is why I use 6 pieces. It didn't recognize as an ingredient but it should because tofu slices are central to many vegetarian and vegan recipes. -- posted by the80srule

Curried Egg Salad

I was looking around for a curried egg salad recipe and couldn't find one that I liked...so I made my own! The addition of the sriracha sauce and green onion gives it a distinctly "ethnic" flavor and is a nice variation from your typical, boring egg salad. This is my new favorite recipe! Would be delicious made into little sliders for a brunch.

Portabello Mushroom Sloppy Joes

Who doesn't like a Sloppy Joe - turkey, beef or vegetarian, it doesn't matter. But sometimes I like to make something a bit different and I don't think I have one version over another I like better. But these to me are a really nice change. Now for me, a good kaiser roll or onion roll and topped with some monterey jack cheese really makes this unique. Traditionally Mom would always serve either coleslaw, potato salad or home made steak fries or during summer up in Michigan, corn on the cob from the garden. -- posted by SarasotaCook

I call this the ultimate because I have never had anything quite like it. This is another versatile recipe. I used a Havarti cheese, but Provolone would be good too. I wouldn't use a tangier cheese, though, because there is a lot going on in this. But, I do recommend a "white" cheese. Use a good bread, too. A nice crusty bread works best. And, use butter. Also, I did make one sandwich with a slice of prosciuto on it and it was very good also. The mild pepper rings in this recipe are from a jar. Found by the pickles in the grocery store. You can use any heat level you like. -- posted by Becky in Wisconsin

Our Favorite BBQ Beef

After making this recipe twice, I lost it. Because I thought I got it here I spent a lot of time searching zaar but could never find quite the right recipe. When I did finally find my original copy, it was from a different site! (I believe it was from cook.com but I have lost it again. Thank goodness I had already copied it elsewhere! lol) My family LOVES this recipe, my husband says this is the only bbq beef to make from now on. It is especially good topped with cole slaw but wonderful plain as well!

Daddy's Pulled Pork- Texan Style!

Pork butt was on sale recently for under $1 per lb. In this economy you want to take advantage of those kind of sales. This was perfect for a get together at our place where we needed to feed lots of people over the weekend! This also doubles very well. We smoked 15 lbs using the same recipe, doubling the brine and rub.

DH loves Alton Brown, so I gave him Alton's recipe as a place to start. DH must be trained well because he wrote (scribbled all over the printed recipe that is) how he changed it up, gave it back to me and said "Baby, would you post this please?" lol Gotta love that man! -- posted by mama's kitchen

Barbecued Shrimp BLT Sandwich With Lemon Butter Sauce

This is a Wolfgang Puck recipe and it is delicious! I found it again when I was surfing the net - as always, looking for something else, and voila I found it! I had eaten this a long time ago when a friend prepared it for us, my friend left for somewhere in Cuba -- never to be heard of again, more than likely she is very busy trying to build a house for her folks wheeling and dealing, so as to get what she needs -- she doesn't have time to write and then find someone that she trusts to deliver the letter to me! Anyway -- the recipe is truly wonderful! :) Wine pairing: If you're feeling adventurous try a full and oakey Chardonnay from Australia like Rosemount, Petaluma or Lindemans. This dish goes great with a number of the micro brews, such as Anchor Steam, Sierra Nevada or the most popular Samuel Adams. -- posted by Manami

This is a recipe I developed and submitted to another website, Chicken breasts are cubed, stir-fried and added to a cilantro, lime juice, honey, and garlic dressing. Serve on a salad of mixed field greens, or over Jasmine Rice. Wrap in a flour tortilla or lettuce leaves for a lunch on-the-go.
