Aunt Edna's Sugar Cookies

My husband's aunt worked as a personal chef for many years. She was one of those incredible people who never measured anything, everything had become second nature. I convinced her to measure everything when she baked a batch--and I was lucky to get a written copy of this before she passed away. They are the most delicious soft sugar cookies I have ever had. :o) -- posted by Bridget Leigh

These biscuits are similar to a melting moment but with an Aussie twist. They are really easy to make & taste great too!
Monster Cookies

I see there are a lot of Monster cookie recipes on here, but there are slight variations of it. I prefer my mom's recipe. Yes I know it calls for a lot of ingredients and in large quantities, but what I like to do is make a large batch before Halloween--hence "Monster" cookies. I put the dough into containers and freeze. This helps me get a jump start on my holidays. I just give out the dough as gifts through the holidays. My family loves it because everyone loves them, but no one wants to take the time to make them. -- posted by Erin Harris

Gingerbread Men

These are seriously cute and addictive! I make these all the time (and sneak bits of the extra stuff!)and give them as gifts especially for easter and Christmas. Great to make with kids as well as they'll have a ball decorating them...I know i do! You don't have to use the chocolate icing, I just find that the flavour matches well with the cookie and provides a great base to stick the decorations too as it sets well. The number of men it makes is just a guess and will vary with different sized cookie cutters. -- posted by Hayley_11

This is a recipe I got from my awesome mother-in-law. We used to always make them around Christmas and have lots of fun together. She was the one who inspired the baker and cook in me so these are very special to me. It would not be Christmas if I didn't make these at least once! The dough needs to refrigerate overnight.
Original Be-Ro Melting Moments-Afternoon Tea Biscuits or Cookies

These are great little "light as a feather" and meltingly crisp English style biscuits, or cookies. This recipe is the slightly adapted recipe from the Be-Ro Flour cookbook - they suggest lard, but I don't "do" lard! Melting Moments ALWAYS made an appearance on my grandmother and mum's afternoon tea table, and we also had them popped into our lunch boxes for school. The recipe is SO easy to rustle up and they stay crisp and fresh for up to 5 days in an airtight tin. You can roll them in coconut or oats, I prefer coconut - but I am sure they would be just as nice with oats, which is a suggested alternative. Children and "big children" love these, and they really are melting moments, great with a cuppa English tea! -- posted by French Tart

Betty's of York Tea Room Fat Rascals - Fruit Buns/Scones

When I worked in York, I used to nip down to Betty's of York Tea Rooms in my lunch break and treat myself to one of these delicious buns! Actually, they are a cross between a bun and a scone, and Betty's Fat Rascals differ from some other recipes, as they have whole blanched almonds and glace cherries on top! The origin of the name is unknown, but they are thought to have been made since the mid 19th Century - under the name of Fat Rascals! They originate from Yorkshire and Durham, and are very popular in most bakeries in the North East of England. These tasty fruit and peel buns are wonderful with a cuppa, to take on a picnic or, to tuck into a lunch box for the hungry workers and children! The original recipe uses lard, probably where the word "Fat" comes from - but I am not a lover of lard, so I have specified butter. A poignant historical note: A few years after Betty’s opened its doors in York war broke out, and Betty’s – in particular the basement ‘Betty’s Bar’ – became a favourite haunt of thousands of airmen stationed around York. ‘Betty’s Mirror’, on which many of them engraved their signatures with a diamond pen, remains on display today as a fitting tribute to their bravery, as obviously, some never came back. (NB: I note that a reviewer has said these are NOT Betty's Fat Rascals!! Well of course they aren't, as I don't have the "secret" recipe - but they are a very close match! There are dozens of Fat Rascals recipes throughout Yorkshire, this recipe is as close as you will get outside Betty's Tea Room! Enjoy them as a typical Yorkshire treat, as I still do in France!) -- posted by French Tart

My sister and I would use one finger each in the center hole and try and tear the cookie apart kind of like a wishbone.
Ginger Cookies

A recipe my mom always made for us. I think she is the reason I love all those nutty spices like ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves - the list goes on and on. These are great with a nice cup of tea for dipping! The dough needs to chill 2 hours before rolling out for cutting - so allow this extra time. The amount of cookies will vary depending on the size and shape of the cookie cutters you use. For a standard 2" round cutter, you will get approximately 40 cookies from this recipe. -- posted by HokiesLady

Low-Fat, Delightful Hamantaschen Cookies

These cookies are traditionally made for the Jewish holiday of Purim, and the traditional filling is made of prunes or poppy seeds. However, I've found these are tremendously popular anytime, and can be spiffed up by using any kind of jelly, jam or preserves as filling. This recipe is lower in fat than my normal recipe (for the full-fat version, replace the banana with another stick of butter and the low-fat yogurt with sour cream).

Enjoy! I always get lots of great comments on these. -- posted by Foxgirl

Can roll them and cut them out, or just roll into small balls and squish with the bottom of a glass. I've used the Betty Crocker and Mrs. White's muffin mixes with equal success. Have yet to try with Jiffy mix though since it's always out. -- posted by F-16 momma

Cookie Bouquet Cookies

I found this from someone else online, and fell in love with it. These are exactly like the cookies I have ordered from Cookie Bouquet. The lemon is what really does it. Make sure to use high-quality, super-fine granulated sugar, as this combined with the powdered sugar gives that melt-in-your-mouth feel. My husband and I enjoy decorating them together. -- posted by Vicki in Houston, TX

This is another of my memories from childhood. I made these cookies back in the '50's when I was quite young. Mother gave me the cookbook where they were written inside, I was still quite young. They are your basic standard peanut butter cookie, but none of the others have these exact same ingredients, so I get to share yet another treasure from my past. -- posted by Sweetiebarbara

I can't believe this recipe hasn't been posted! Jammie Dodgers are really yummy biscuits (cookies) that are popular in U.K., I always associate them with parties when I was little. They're like linzer cookies but thicker and more kid-friendly. This recipe was originally from the Australian taste.au site but I've changed it slightly to make them taste more authentic.
Animal-Cracker Cookies

Found this on the William-Sonoma web site and they are so cute and look pretty easy think the DGSs will really like them. So decided to put the recipe here for safe keeping until the cookie cutters I've ordered arrive and I can make them. I think these will be fun and most recipes I get from William Sonoma taste great so hope these do to. Prep time does not include refrigeration or cooling time. I've guessed at the serving amount as the number of cookies will depend on the size of your cutters. Mine are small like regular animal crackers. -- posted by Bonnie G #2

These little cookies look great when you draw different designs on them with regular and sparkly icing. I suggest using those prepackaged tubes of fine point icing for these cookies, but feel free to use any icing you want to. You will need to have something to pipe the cing on with. You will also need a 2 1/2 inch round cookie cutter for this. -- posted by Jess4Freedom

I like my cookies soft. This fit the bill. Plus, they decorated beautifuly. They reminded me of the look of a Cookie Bouquet cookie with a lot better taste.
Easy Cut Rugelach

This delicious and beautiful recipe for rugelach (a flakey, tender Jewish pastry / cookie) was handed down through 4 generations of Gourmet Magazine's food editor Melissa Roberts’s family and was recently featured as part of "Gourmet’s Favorite Cookies: 1941-2008". These are easier than the typical crescent rugelach as they are scored first, baked, and then broken into individual cookies afterwards, for a wonderful variety of textures from top to bottom.
The dough can be used for many different fillings including: Nutella (warm slightly before spreading), mini chocolate chips, cinnamon sugar, etc... Just use what you like! These freeze well.
Dough must be chilled (preferably overnight) before using. -- posted by blucoat

A great holiday treat! This is a delicious low-fat cookie recipe from the great cookbook, "One Smart Cookie: All Your Favourite Cookies, Squares, Brownies and Biscotti... with less fat !", by Julie Van Rosendaal. Dough must chill for an hour before rolling out.
An alternative (make-ahead) way to make this recipe is as an icebox cookie.
Shape the dough into a 12” long log, wrap in waxed paper or plastic wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. Slice log into 1/4” slices and bake as directed. -- posted by blucoat

My Favorite Rolled Sugar Cookies

I found this recipe on a bag of Wal-mart sugar some time ago, and it was so simple, I had to try it. I have tried a zillion sugar cookie recipes, trying to get the soft cookie I like best. I think I have found the perfect sugar cookie. Please note that your cookie yield will vary, depending on what size cookie cutter you used. When I use a variety of sized Christmas cookie cutters, I normally get about 2-1/2 dozen. -- posted by AndreaVT96

This cookie recipe for Linzer Sables require a little effort, but they are so beautiful and tasty. The recipe is from one of my favourite cookbooks, "Baking: From My Home to Yours", by Dorie Greenspan. For a simpler cookie, omit the cutouts, although it does make beautiful cookies. You can dust these with confectioner's sugar just before serving.
Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

These are crisp on the surface with a soft and gooey centre. These are great for the holiday season as the white powdered sugar contrasts dramatically with the deep brown chocolate crevices and they look as though they are covered in snow.
Traditional Algerian Sables (Cookies) - Like Linzer Augen

This is my own family recipe for the traditional Algerian 'Sables' cookies.
These sables are very easy to make & are a real favourite in our home. We like them with strawberry jam filling & icing sugar dusting or with apricot jam filing & dessicated coconut finish... but you can use any of your favourite preserves (if they have fruit pieces in you should sieve them before using.
I have a special 4cm fluted sables cutter but you can use any cutters. I oftern use star cutters then punch out the small round centre by using a small metal bottle top (like on food colourings), or round cutter & using a small star, heart or flower cutter for the centre.

These sables freeze nicely in layers separated by parchment or waxed paper in an airtight container. Allow to defrost in a single layer then dust the tops & fill with jam. -- posted by Um Safia

British Fig Rolls - Almost Better Than Shop Bought!

This is a recipe I found many years ago for authentic Fig Rolls, and they are almost better than the shop bought variety, much though I love the commercial ones! Try to roll out the pastry as thinly as possible, other than that, this recipe is a breeze to make. Fig rolls are a much-loved "biscuit" from my childhood days and I make them whenever I can as I now live in France, as we cannot get them here. Fig rolls are great for a mid-morning snack with a cuppa as well as being ideal for school lunchboxes, picnics, gifts and afternoon tea.
This is the recipe that I use for the Cut out frosted butter cookies. This recipe is also in the Best Foods of Christmas cookbook. I always double this recipe so we have plenty of frosting to go around for everyone to decorate. I also divide the frosting into thirds. I'll take one bowl of frosting and add red food coloring to make it pink and add peppermint extract. In another bowl of frosting I'll add green food coloring for green frosting. In the other bowl of frosting I keep it white for white frosting.
I made these cookies with my mom when I was young. My daughter and I now make these every year for Christmas keeping the tradition going. This recipe comes out of a darling cookbook dated 1947 called Best Loved Foods of Christmas. The pictures and graphics are so adorable. Baking the cookies isn't always the fun part but the decorating is a blast! My daughter asks me every year about SUMMER time Mom, can we make Cutout cookies again this year LOL! I always say YES most certainly! The time it takes to make these is worth the time. If you share these with others you will get so many compliments! IWhen I make these I break it up into a 2 day job. First day we bake the cookies and next day we decorate. These cookies also store well. I store them in a big air tight plastic container. Anyways have a blast making these. Your children or Grandchildren will grow up having fond memories of you and them baking these as I do with my Mother! -- posted by SoCalCookerGal

Coconut Cookie Slices (Danish Fedtebrød)

These cookie slices were my absolute favorites growing up in Denmark; they are simple but yet so delicious - especially if you are a sweetened coconut fan. This is an old family recipe; I have tried to search the origin but it goes hundreds of years back literally. I have done my best to convert recipe into cups/tbsp but if you have a scale I recommend that you weigh the ingredients instead of using the other measures. The cookies freeze well. -- posted by Deantini

Sugar Cookie Cut-Outs

I had misplaced this recipe and recently found it again. When DD was in Kindergarten the children had to take turns bringing a snack to school for everyone to share and DD loved to bring these cookies. I love this recipe because it doesn't require refrigeration before rolling out and because the cookies always turned out beautifully. The recipe is from a little booklet called Wilton Christmas Recipes & Ideas.
Note: If you're using margarine, be sure to use the hard margarine that comes in a brick like butter, not soft tub margarine. -- posted by Dreamer in Ontario

Barbara's Tea Cakes (Cookies)

A dear friend shared this recipe with me many years ago. The recipe became a favorite & I have used it for everything over the years. It has made it way to many a Girl Scout mtg, school party, potluck, etc. Tea Cakes became my family's favorite cookie at the holidays. It isn't Christmas without a platter of these & a bag for everyone to take home. They are good plain and sweeter with the glaze & icing. -- posted by Susie D

Fluffy "cut-Out" Sugar Cookies

Have you ever had those sugar cookies at publix that are really fluffy and cake like? Well hear is that recipe. I think its the sour cream that makes it so fluffy. I also roll them out maybe 1/4 in thick and under cook them a little but thats probably a personal preference. They do take a little work just like any cut-out cookies but this is something that anytime I ask someone in our family what I can bring for dessert they always say this! I use my kitchen aid but before that I would use my hand blender as long as I could and then mix the last part of the flour in by hand. Hope you enjoy. -- posted by 998171
