Classic Sweet Potato Pie

I don't know why some people are afraid to try sweet potato pie even though they love pumpkin pie. If anyone is unsure about whether they should try it I encourage them by asking, "Which do you like better--squash or mashed potatoes?" Works every time. It has nearly the same flavor as a pumpkin pie. -- posted by chef 29271

Heavenly Sweet Potato Pie

So good, it doesn't need a crust! Add one if you desire. Made this for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it! It smelled so good thanks to the maple syrup and nutmeg. Add cinnamon if you wish, which I am sure will make it even nummier! Cook time only accounts for baking. You can "bake" the potatoes by nuking them for 10 mins. -- posted by nomnom

Sweet Potato Pie My Eye

I lived in the deep south for over 20 years and have tasted hundreds of sweet potato pies. This is the best recipe I've tried. It's the only one I make now. I find the flavor more complex if you bake the sweet potatoes instead of boiling them. Baking them in a slow oven until they begin to caramelize really brings out their flavor. -- posted by Nimshi

Sweet Potato Pie With Pecan Crust

This is a relatively new recipe at my house. I got it from an old friend who knows how much my oldest child and my dad love sweet potato pies. He told me to try this crust out and see how they like it. Well, it is a new oft requested dessert at my house and my daddy has become an expert at it.
JUST FYI, you can use pumpkin instead of sweet potatoes for a pumpkin pie and it is really good too. -- posted by Sherrybeth

Courage Pie

I found this on Salon's website at http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2008/12/20/pie_love/index1.html in an article written by Vincent Rossmeier about the joys of pie. He quotes a cookbook by Francine Segan called Shakespear'e kitchen. The original recipe from the 15th century contained sparrow brains -- an ingredient mercifully missing. I have altered the recipe slightly to suit my own taste. -- posted by Chef George S.

Mock Chestnut Torte (Passover Cake)

This recipe is from the wonderful cookbook, "A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking", by Marcy Goldman. This pareve Pesach cake tastes like a rich but light chocolate cheesecake. It's wonderful with or without the glaze. If you don't mind a dairy cake, it's also excellent with a regular ganache (with cream, etc...). Kids will LOVE this and won't even know they're eating a vegetable (you cannot taste the sweet potatoes). Enjoy!

You can also serve this in squares, as French-style "petit fours." The glaze slicks this up but is not necessary — a dusting of cocoa is just fine. -- posted by blucoat

Please Try My Sweet Potato Pie

Calling all pie lovers and seasoned bakers. I would love your opinions on this sweet potato pie recipe. It was my first attempt and I thought it came out really good, but I would greatly appreciate objective and honest comments and reviews. The "Basic Flaky Pie Crust" recipe came from another website and I didn't change a thing (in my opinion, the crust was perfect!) For the filling, I read several recipes, tweaked them each a tad and settled on a combination that I thought might work. So, please try my sweet potato pie....and let me know what you think. I value your opinions. -- posted by CookETC

Rosie's Sweet Potato Pies

Found this in the Times-Picayune. It was reposted in response to a request who lost his copy of it from Hurricane Katrina's flooding. Too many treat the sweet potato the same as pumpkin when making pies. It has a different more subtle flavor that benefits from judicious use of only nutmeg to let its own glorious flavor shine through. Only difference between this & our own recipe is we roast rather than boil our sweet potatoes. Posted as printed in The Times-Picayune. NOTE - this can be mixed aheaad of time & stored in the fridge to be poured into prepared crusts when ready to bake (a great thing when the oven is full!). -- posted by Buster's friend

Vegan Sweet Potato Pie

We grew a wonderful crop of sweet potatoes this year. So I though, there is a pie in here somewhere! I found a couple of recipes on the net for Sweet Potato Pie but didn't really like the ingredients of either, so decided to tweak them and make one pie to suit my tastes. I used my Easy Vegan Spelt Pie Crust in this pie. http://www.recipezaar.com/Easy-Vegan-Spelt-Pie-Crust-196863 Always make sure your sweet potatoes are cooked before using them in a pie. You could even prepare the filling the day before if you like. It's up to you how you want to cook your sweet potatoes. I'm going to bake mine because I feel boiling will introduce too much water into the sweet potatoes. I didn't include the cooking time for the potatoes in this receipe. Here's a link that hows a few different ways to cook the potatoes:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5362516_cook-potatoes-three-different-ways.html I used 2 lbs. of potatoes. Once they were cooked and peeled they were closer to the 1 3/4 lbs. needed for the pie. -- posted by Chef Joey Z.

"pumpkin Pie" Filling for Mexico

I live in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico and canned pumpkin is rather expensive as it is imported. I have worked out what I believe to be a rather good substitute. I usually for go the crust and bake it as a custard of sorts.
Where do I get the brown sugar cooked camotes??? From the guy with the wheelbarrow on the plaza in Chapala or sometimes in the arcade there is a lady selling them. You will notice there is no sugar added..... that's how sweet these camotes are. -- posted by davinandkennard

Sweet Potato or Pumpkin Pie

I personally think that sweet potato makes a far superior pie to waterlogged pumpkin in this American classic dessert.
