Hummingbird Nectar

This is my little hummingbird friend's favorite nectar. I know some people don't add the coloring, but my little hummer refuses to drink unless it is red. If you have a less picky humminbird then you don't need to bother with the coloring. I have heard conflicting informations from "experts" regarding the use of food color. If your hummingbird doesn't object...leave it out...mine does object and hasn't had problems so I use it. Luckily I live in Florida and can enjoy seeing hummingbirds all year long! :o) -- posted by gingerkitten D

Rei's Favorite Cookies (dog Treats)

Simple and wholesome - Rei, my Japanese spitz puppy would beg for these! Use any baby food you like as long as there's no onions in the it (some dogs may be allergic to corn too). BTW if your dog is sensitive to wheat, you can also use brown rice flour although amount may vary. Just mix till u get a slightly sticky dough that you roll into balls with. -- posted by WaterMelon

D-Ring Delights (Horse Treats)

The perfect horse treat recipe made by me! My horse absolutely loves them and they will keep for about 2 - 3 weeks depending on hardness. To make the cookies harder use less molasses and for more stickiness and darkness use more molasses. Also, you may not think that you have added enough molasses BUT most likely don't add anymore, just keep mixing. -- posted by Reagan B.

Puppy Puffies

These are great for teething puppies. I wash and re-use the pudding cups and applesauce cups from the kids lunches. **UPDATE: My youngest puppy seems to be allergic to wheat or corn. We haven't figured out which one. As a precaution, I now omit cream of wheat, wheat germ and whole wheat flour for her. I just use all-purpose flour (3 tbsp) and up the powdered milk a bit more (2 tbsp). She still likes them and they don't make her itch. -- posted by Saturn

Vegetarian Dog Chowder

This is great for older less active dogs who could use the protein, but not the fat, of meat.
And just to be clear, despite what one chef had to say about garlic, oil, and the lot, my vet had no problem with this recipe, says my dog benefits from it, and attributes her wonderful health at her old age in part to her diet. So choose carefully when it comes to your own dog and consult your vet if you are worried, but know that this is not the poisonous concoction some would have you believe. -- posted by Mims & Squims

Dog Food for Dogs With Upset Tummies and Don't Want to Eat

If your dog is listless, has an unset stomach and/or vomiting, this is what my veterinarian suggested I feed my dogs. It works every time. Even if they won't eat anything else, they will usually eat some of this food and it is easy on their tummies. I have passed this along to a lot of my friends and it has always worked on their dogs too. Time does not include time for cooking rice. If you like, you can purchase a quart of white rice at a Chinese carryout. As you can see from the nutritional information, this recipe is low in fat AND sodium. -- posted by Crafty Lady 13

Recipe #2 of handwritten notes from somewhere...sorry I cannot remember where I found this recipe. This is an "all-season" suet treat for birds but I still find that I use it more in the late fall - early spring seasons but maybe that is because I do not feed my bird friends suet in the summer and instead use a variety of unsalted nuts. -- posted by HokiesLady

*** Note: Regarding garlic and dogs: Many dogs enjoy the taste of garlic and it's a natural flea repellent. A small bit of cooked garlic should not be toxic. However, according to the American Animal Hospital Association, raw and spoiled garlic is toxic and potentially fatal to dogs. Consult with your veterinarian before using and use in small quantities.*** -- posted by Dreamer in Ontario

Homemade Cat Food

We have a 20-year old cat, Smoki, who is a bit finicky, so I went looking for a recipe he would like. This one is my modification of Recipe #91152, adjusting it to utilize an entire one pound container of chicken livers. (The cat is the only one in the house who likes liver.) I also poach the livers before chopping to make them keep better in the fridge. Smoki loves this recipe, and it is cheaper than premium cat food. Our other cat, Hector, is only 18 months, and he loves it, too. -- posted by soup nut
