Dog Food for Dogs With Upset Tummies and Don't Want to Eat

If your dog is listless, has an unset stomach and/or vomiting, this is what my veterinarian suggested I feed my dogs. It works every time. Even if they won't eat anything else, they will usually eat some of this food and it is easy on their tummies. I have passed this along to a lot of my friends and it has always worked on their dogs too. Time does not include time for cooking rice. If you like, you can purchase a quart of white rice at a Chinese carryout. As you can see from the nutritional information, this recipe is low in fat AND sodium. -- posted by Crafty Lady 13

This is an "all-season" suet treat for birds but I still find that I use it more in the late fall - early spring seasons but maybe that is because I do not feed my bird friends suet in the summer and instead use a variety of unsalted nuts. -- posted by HokiesLady

Chicken Jerky for Dogs

You can dehydrate your own chicken for you dogs at a fraction of the cost of commercial chicken jerky. I found the method on expertvillage.com. Edited to add: Well, here's a great example why you shouldn't make a recipe public until after you've tried it. I've now made the recipe (after it was reviewed and found to be in need of a much longer cooking time) and the instructions have now been corrected.
Note: Regarding garlic and dogs: Many dogs enjoy the taste of garlic and it's a natural flea repellent. A small bit of cooked garlic should not be toxic. However, according to the American Animal Hospital Association, raw and spoiled garlic is toxic and potentially fatal to dogs. Consult with your veterinarian before using and use in small quantities. -- posted by Dreamer in Ontario

Homemade Cat Food

We have a 20-year old cat, Smoki, who is a bit finicky, so I went looking for a recipe he would like. This one is my modification of Recipe #91152, adjusting it to utilize an entire one pound container of chicken livers. (The cat is the only one in the house who likes liver.) I also poach the livers before chopping to make them keep better in the fridge. Smoki loves this recipe, and it is cheaper than premium cat food. Our other cat, Hector, is only 18 months, and he loves it, too. -- posted by soup nut

Canine Cuisine

Healthy meals for your precious dogs.
Made with fresh vegetables and meat. You can use ground turkey, ground beef, or ground chicken. The leaner the meat the better for your dog.
My Dog loves this meal. I quit buying supermarket food when he refused to eat it. I have a med size dog,(chinese crested powder puff) yes, that is his breed. Sounds like something you might eat. So this is how I make his favorite food.
I make 3 weeks of meals at a time and freeze them, but this recipe is for one week so you can try it and see if your dog loves it as much as mine.
The containers I pack them in are the same size as the dog food beneful. (10oz.) -- posted by Jenylyn

We got fisher at 8 weeks old and we have had him for only 2 weeks and he will sit, heel, lie down, shake a paw and rollover all with the help of these treats!!! Fisher looooves these he can't get enough and so will your dog. As a huge bonus they are cheap and healthy for your dog, full of iron and protein. -- posted by delish #2

No-Melt Suet (For Birds)

This is a tried and true suet recipe that I found in Birds and Blooms Extra, contributed by Virginia Barnard. She explains that it works very well in Oklahoma's high summer temperatures. We live in Wisconsin, where it obviously isn't quite as hot, but it has held up here, even in direct sun. The squirrels like it too, but now that we're offering other food for them, a little ways away, they aren't bothering it as much as they were at first. The recipe is written for lard, but I used saved bacon grease and it has worked fine. The next time I make it, I'm going to experiment with less or none of the sugar, as it doesn't seem necessary. But, I guess maybe the birds could have a little sweet tooth, too! Note: yield is approximate. I doubled the batch last time I made it, and filled 2 quart ziplock containers after putting some in a feeder, so I'm not exactly sure how much I started out with. -- posted by SrtaMaestra

Bunneh's Bunny Rabbit Treats

Bunneh LOVES these! After he has his treat, he thanks me by licking a hole in my arm, or darned near! You could replace the carrot with apple or pear, but keep in mind these are treats, not a regular diet/food, and should be given sparingly. For a bunny, 1 tablespoon of fruit a day is the maximum you should give your furball. Timothy hay pellets are the best type of pellets, Zupreem the best brand.
Pear & Banana Bunny Rabbit Treats for Bunnies/Rabbits

My little guy just loves these home baked goodies, but please remember they're treats and meant to be given sparingly. The ideal food for rabbits is a high quality, fresh hay (I use Oxbow Timothy hay), but once a day I give Bunneh either one of these or a tiny piece of fresh fruit. He also gets fresh vegetables or herbs, but again, the main diet should be the hay and plenty of fresh water. Bunnies are easily amused and not prone to getting bored with food like we are, so don't worry about the hay. ;o)

As always, I highly recommend that every pet owner consults with their vet about their pets' diet. -- posted by Sandi (From CA)

If you are not so open to using a commercial breath freshener for your dog, you can try some homemade formulations that may be more effective over the long term. A freind gave this to me & it works great. Good luck & enjoy all the sweet smelling kisses you'll be getting.
Cheesy Dog Treats

A simple easy recipe that I make all the time. You may have to add a little more or less flour to get a nice dough. It's in such a small amount because I roll the dough into little balls and smash them. (that also keeps them fresh, in a small amount) You would probably have to triple or double it if you are using cookie cutters. Enjoy!! -- posted by Chef Chocoholic

Snorkey's Dog Food!

My dog is picky, PERIOD! Who knew what I was getting myself into when we got the fluff ball! He is horribly picky and gets diarrhea from most canned dog foods. After trying TONS of different types, I finally researched homemade dog foods. This recipe was the first and the last we will ever use. He no longer gets diarrhea and can't wait for dinner time! We have been using it for about 2 years and our vet says he eats better than she does! It makes ALOT so I freeze week portions in freezer bags, it will feed him for 5 1/2 weeks! -- posted by Rollin in the Dough!
