Strawberry-Papaya Shake

A great day starter from BH&G!
Papaya Tips: Choose papayas that are partly yellow and feel slightly soft when pressed. The skin should be smooth and free from bruises or very soft spots. A firm, unripe papaya can be ripened at room temperature for 3 to 5 days until mostly yellow to yellowish orange in color. Store a ripe papaya in a paper or plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
English, Australian, Caribbean, Italian, Native American, Southern USA, Mexican, Spanish catagories.
"Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did." (Dr. William Butler, 17th Century English Writer) Dr. Butler is referring to the strawberry. Strawberries are the best of the berries. The delicate heart-shaped berry has always connoted purity, passion and healing. It has been used in stories, literature and paintings through the ages.
In Othello, Shakespeare decorated Desdemonda's handkerchief with symbolic strawberries.
Madame Tallien, a prominent figure at the court of the Emperor Napoleon, was famous for bathing in the juice of fresh strawberries. She used 22 pounds per basin, needless to say, she did not bathe daily.
In parts of Bavaria, country folk still practice the annual rite each spring of tying small baskets of wild strawberries to the horns of their cattle as an offering to elves. They believe that the elves, who are passionately fond of strawberries, will help to produce healthy calves and abundance of milk in return.
The American Indians were already eating strawberries when the Colonists arrived. The crushed berries were mixed with cornmeal and baked into strawberry bread. After trying this bread, Colonists developed their own version of the recipe and Strawberry Shortcake was created.
In Greek and Roman times, the strawberry was a wild plant.
The English "strawberry" comes from the Anglo-Saxon "streoberie" not spelled in the modern fashion until 1538.
The first documented botanical illustration of a strawberry plant appeared as a figure in Herbaries in 1454.
In 1780, the first strawberry hybrid "Hudson" was developed in the United States.
Legend has it that if you break a double strawberry in half and share it with a member of the opposite sex, you will fall in love with each other.
The strawberry was a symbol for Venus, the Goddess of Love, because of its heart shapes and red color.
Queen Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII had a strawberry shaped birthmark on her neck, which some claimed proved she was a witch.
To symbolize perfection and righteousness, medieval stone masons carved strawberry designs on altars and around the tops of pillars in churches and cathedrals.
The wide distribution of wild strawberries is largely from seeds sown by birds. It seems that when birds eat the wild berries the seeds pass through them intact and in reasonably good condition. The germinating seeds respond to light rather than moisture and therefore need no covering of earth to start growing.
Medicinal Uses
The strawberry, a member of the rose family, is unique in that it is the only fruit with seeds on the outside rather than the inside. Many medicinal uses were claimed for the wild strawberry, its leaves and root.

The ancient Romans believed that the berries alleviated symptoms of melancholy, fainting, all inflammations, fevers, throat infections, kidney stones, halitosis, attacks of gout, and diseases of the blood, liver and spleen. -- posted by Sharon123

Grilled Pound Cake; Mexican Chocolate Sauce & Tropical Fruit

Recipe by Michelle Bernstein, From Miami's Hottest Latin Party. This recipe originally appeared in June, 2006. "Here, she tops slices of warm grilled cake with a fantastic Mexican-inspired chocolate sauce flavored with cocoa, cinnamon and chile powder." My girlfriend Judy and I made this for some guests. I was worried about the chile powder in the chocolate and the basil in the fruit salad but it really worked well together and we enjoyed it very much. Judy is friends with Michelle Bernstein so she wanted to try some of her recipes. Judy has lived in Mexico as well as Italy when they left Cuba and then ended up in Miami by way of Lancaster, Pa. So her recipes take me along for the ride. This could be made with pineapple, as well. -- posted by Manami

Tropical Green Salad

Pumpkin seeds, known in Spanish as pepitas, have been part of the Mexican pantry since before the arrival of Columbus in the New World, while pomegranate seeds came to the Americas with the Spanish conquistadores.
Tropical Fool

Pork Stuffed Papaya

Papaya may be used in either sweet or savory recipes. As the fruit and leaves contain an enzyme that tenderizes meat, it is an ideal fruit to use in savory dishes . For this dish, choose papayas with mottled green and yellow skins, as they should be slightly under-ripe. -- posted by Olga Drozd

Thick Tropical Smoothie With Bananas and Strawberries

Just had a root canal and having other toothache problems so it's difficult for me to chew solid food, including fruits. I recently had purchased a can of Safeway brand Tropical Fruit with Pineapple and Passion Fruit Juices. The ingredients read: pineapple, red papaya, yellow papaya, pineapple juice, water, sugar, passion fruit juice, banana puree, citric acid. I emptied the can with the juice into a freezer-safe container and froze overnight. I let the frozen fruit thaw in the fridge for a few hours and then ran the container under cool water for a about 30 seconds to break up the mass of frozen fruit from the edges of the container and then cut it up with a plastic pancake turner. I used a square-shaped container and broke the frozen fruit up into 4 large pieces so it would fit into the blender. Bf bought me fresh strawberries so chose to use those over the frozen ones I had. I always keep sliced, frozen bananas on hand in the freezer. The water in the recipe is necessary for the blending and it doesn't taste too watered down, and I needed just about 1/2 cup. The honey is for a little added sweetness. This makes two very large servings. This turned out thick, but drinkable. Please let me know how you like my recipe. It would make a great breakfast, snack, or even dessert! Prep time doesn't include freezing time for the fruit. -- posted by blancpage

Hawaii Da Kine Burgers W/ Sweet-Chili Glaze & Goat Cheese

Sutter Home's 2008 Build a Better Burger ® Winner!!!!
"Da kine" is a key phrase in Hawaiian Pidgin, the language of the "locals." It can mean almost anything, but commonly refers to something good or genuine, or as in this case, "the best."

This burger is as local as it gets, both in taste and ingredients. The patties are tender and juicy, thanks to fresh papaya and sweet onion, and are spiced with Hawaiian Portuguese sausage, which is so popular in Hawaii that it is on every breakfast menu (including McDonald’s). The accompanying salad employs heating oil to its smoking point, a local cooking method, resulting in a dynamite burger accompaniment. To complete the Hawaiian flavoring, I added a sweet glaze (Hawaiians love sweet and savory) and was inspired by our award-winning goat dairy to create a mouth-watering ginger-infused cheese spread. Ho, dat's da kine!
