Cardamom-Flavored Fruit Salad (Salatat Al-Fawaakih)

From: "Classic Vegetarian Cooking from the Middle East & North Africa"-Arabian Gulf. This is the BEST fruit salad my husband or I have ever tried! It's easy, healthy, refreshing and WONDERFUL. You have to like cardamom to really appreciate it though. You may find yourself doubling the sauce in the future because you want to drink it up. I don't repeat very many recipes because there are too many new ones to try but this one is repeated over and over during cantaloupe season. I'm sure it would work with other fruits as well but I like this combo so much I haven't experimented. -- posted by Engrossed

Honey-Orange Baked French Toast

I've seen other baked French Toast and other Orange French Toast recipes on the 'zaar, but I haven't seen any quite like this one. I got it from my sister. It is great to feed a larger group and can be made the night before. The orange and honey flavors meld very well in this nice French Toast. Even better, it doesn't need butter or syrup at the table. -- posted by Anissa Wolf

Bergamot Fresh Fruit Salad With Scented Pelargonium Leaves

This fruit salad is amazing, and all the more for the addition of bergamot leaves and flowers! The fragrant leaves of this versatile herb delicately flavour the syrup whilst the gorgeous shaggy red flowers and scented pelargonium leaves decorate it for the final finishing flourish! If you are a lover of Earl Gray tea, you will instantly recognise the flavour of this herb, as it is used to flavour this famous and popular tea blend.
NOTE: Bergamot, often referred to as bee balm, became distinguished as "Oswego Tea" when a Quaker botanist, John Bartram, sampled a tea made from the leaves. A Bergamot lemon is a small yellow sour citrus fruit similar to an orange, mostly cultivated in Calabria in Italy. The rind contains an essential oil used in perfumery (the basis for eau-de-cologne), confectionary and Earl Grey tea. The zest is also used in pâtisserie. NB: Prep time includes cooling time. -- posted by French Tart

Kellie's Basic, Go Ahead and Mess With It, Scone Recipe

This recipe started as a Lemon Glazed Scone recipe I found in a locally published recipe book, you know the kind sold as a money raiser with personal recipes from community members. Over the years I have adapted it many times. It has become the basic formula I use to make scones for tea with friends, family gatherings or on those mornings when I wake up and find we are out of bread and cereal. I add whatever I have in the cupboard or fridge. It has never let me down.

I encourage you to substitute and add stuff. The basic formula is mix together the dry stuff, cut in the shortening, stir in any lumpy additions then mix in the wet stuff. Have fun with it! -- posted by redplaid huf

Apple, Orange, and Yogurt Delight

I make these the night before for my husband and I to grab and go the next day. The acid in the mandarin oranges keeps the apples from turning brown. Sometimes, I'll add half a banana to each one for more fruit. I either use nonfat vanilla yogurt or plain nonfat Greek yogurt with a little vanilla extract mixed in. And I don't peel the apples for the extra fiber. It's so simple to make....if you can cut up fruit, then you can have this simple recipe! -- posted by CharlieGal

To Die for Coconut Pie! (New Zealand)

There doesn't seem to be anything similar on Zaar yet, so this had to be posted!! This is a wonderful, versatile 'pie'.
Mandarin Chicken Salad

This is a great lunch salad. Or you can leave out the chicken and serve at family dinner time as a side salad. To save yourself some time you can use frozen chicken tenders, just make sure to cook them first LOL.
Or you can use a package of Maple Leaf already cooked chicken pieces.

This is another gem of a recipe that I discovered on a recipe card from Wolds Way Lavender Farm in North Yorkshire, England – which is just 10 minutes from my parent's cottage.
Cold Avocado and Cucumber Soup With Dill

No-cook soup good for hot days of summer. Real easy to make because the blender or food processor does most of the chopping, but it takes time to chill which is not included in cooking time. I omitted the optional shrimp (8-16 boiled & chilled) since I'm a vegetarian, but you might want to add some to yours. It also very light and low-fat. From the August 2009 food section of the New York Times, adopted from "Once Upon a Tart..." by Frank Mentesana and Jerome Audureau.
Chocolate-Orange Cake

I love this cake for several reasons. I love chocolate and orange together, I love cake in general, and sometimes I like to cook without eggs or other high-allergen foods just to keep my game up, although this cake does require yogurt so probably can't be made vegan . I found the original recipe on a blog by Shyamala Ramanathan-Edwards http://srefoodblog.blogspot.com/, who based her recipe on one from the eggless baking book by Cintia Stammers, published by the Bhaktivedanta Trust. Then I put chocolate in it.
I have never made the orange-sultana (raisin) filling, instead using (eggless) orange curd such as http://www.recipezaar.com/fresh-orange-curd-357753 and/or chocolate ganache. -- posted by Shoga-chan

I got this recipe from my Spanish teacher, who was from Bogota, in the early 1970s.
Adding this to my holiday cookie trays. Adapted from a recipe in The Seattle Times provided by Lynne Rossetto Kasper. Something wonderful about orange at Christmas. Coconut is always so festive too. The article noted this dough really benefits from resting overnight in the refrigerator so start the day before.
