Veal or Chicken Stew with Herbs & Barley

In 7th century England, herbs were one of the few flavourings available to cooks and were used heavily, as in this medieval recipe. The original recipe also allowed the cook to use rabbit or hare joints in place of the veal or chicken. -- posted by Mille® ™

Orange Omelette for Harlots and Ruffians

This is a medieval recipe. The original instructions (translated from the medieval language) read as follows: "How to make an orange omelette: Take eggs and break them, with oranges, as many as you like; squeeze their juice and add to it the eggs with sugar; then take fat, and heat it in the pan and add the eggs. This is for ruffians and brazen harlots." -- posted by Mille® ™

Amazingly Easy Pie Crusts

This is the EASIEST way to make a quick two-crust pie crust! Forget measurements and pastry blenders! Whatever amount of flour you need, you then take HALF that amount for your lard/margarine amount. Motto "Half as much fat as flour." Do as the English do and use half lard and half butter for the shortening. -- posted by Mille® ™

Swedish Yorkshire Pudding (no, that's NOT a typo!)

A little known fact: Yorkshire Pudding was brought to England by the Vikings. Originally called 'Tjockpannkaka', it was a delicacy eaten only at feasts to celebrate the homecoming of the main fleet of Viking ships. 'Thorsvedt the Berserk' was a Viking warrior who remained in northern England after a particularly bloody battle and passed on the recipe to the natives of the village he had earlier pillaged. This strange food was eaten along with basic vegetables and slices of meat on the Sabbath. Thus the humble Yorkshire pud and the Sunday roast were born! -- posted by Mille® ™

Sugar Free Punch

A Sugar Free Punch that a Type 1 diabetic could drink all day long without having to take extra insulin. People with diabetes will just love you for thinking of THEM! Especially any diabetic child like mine. Do you realize a Type 1 diabetic can eat only at certain times of the day and only a certain amount of carbohydrates? Hopefully my daughter will go on the insulin pump this summer so things do not have to be so rigid for her. -- posted by Charlotte J

This is a snack served in middle eastern markets. It is known as the dukkah, the poor man's dinner, and perfect travel food. You can serve this as described or instead of the pitas you can serve with balls of soft cheese, sliced tomatoes, or cucumbers. Keeps well also unrefridgerated. -- posted by tinala

Chile Verde Meatballs

The combination of frozen meatballs and chile verde sauce was a very happy discovery... the results are absolutely delicious! (And they're almost ridiculously easy to prepare, too.) I plan on making these in the future for potlucks and as appetizers. This is another Pantry Challenge recipe, where I use items I already have at home to make meals. -- posted by Julesong

Horseradish-And-Herb-Crusted Beef Rib Roast

The inspiration for this delicious roast comes from chef John Besh's father-in-law, Pat Berrigan, who serves it every Christmas with horseradish sauce on the side. Besh opts to smear the roast with a horseradish, garlic & herb butter, which bakes to form an irresistible crust. However, this meal need not be only for Christmas! Recipe by chef John Besh from The Big, Easy Christmas in F&W Magazine, December 2007 edition. MAKE AHEAD The horseradish-herb butter can be refrigerated overnight. Let the butter soften before using. Serve with recipe #60384 and make with 3 tablespoons of the fat from the roast, french string beans, a nice bread and a sustantial Cabernet Sauvignon; Cabernet's firm tannins help cut the richness of the red meat. -- posted by Manami

Roasted Shrimp With Feta (Barefoot Contessa)

This is Ina Garten's secret for convincing your guests that you're a natural-born cook! I recommend Greek or French feta if you can find it. Usually Ina prefers feta cubed rather than crumbled, but here she crumbles it in large pieces. Pernod is one of her secret ingredients. "Whenever I cook with fennel, Pernod gives the dish just the right licorice jolt that I love. You don't know the Pernod is there, you just know that the fennel tastes wonderful." -- posted by Manami

Noble House Long Life Noodles

Any type of noodle - thin chow mein noodles to broad rice noodles to the thicker Shanghai wheat noodles - is a must at Chinese New Year's.
Caramelized onion and golden raisins add sweet balance to the shrimp. It can be assembled in no time by making the onion spread ahead. Remove the shrimp for a vegetarian option and replace with crumbled feta.
