Vampire Cookies

These are fun cookies for Halloween or a vampire genre party. The cookies have a light vanilla and butter flavor to them, and are the perfect color to really set off the red of the filling. The have a slightly crisp edge and a soft, chewy center. When you take a bite and expose the jam, they really do look like they’re bleeding! They are baked at a slightly cooler temperature than some cookies, so they don’t really brown during baking. Best if served the same day. I found this recipe on one of my favorite blogs, Baking Bites. -- posted by tammy dalton

Black Forest Cake

My daughter loves cherries. For her birthday, I've been making this cake. It is fairly simple and can be made 13x9" or with 2-8 inch rounds. I used 'light' cherries for the topping, and frozen dark for the cake itself. This choice is up to you, as long as the amount of moisture is equivalent. I also took the juice from the cherry topping and added it to the whip cream, to make it flavorful, so I wouldn't add additional sugar, and to color it ever so slightly. -- posted by Le Gout

Easy Quilt Cake ( 4th of July Cake)

You can bet that this cake will be the center of attention on your BBQ, picnic, or any 4th of July! This cake, from Good Housekeeping is a little long on Directions, but to make up for it,a little surprise: It starts with a cake mix and ends with purchased frosting! There are some things that you can get at any cake decorating or craft stores. Once you get all, of your ingredients in front of you, it goes quicker. My neighbor and I made one together 3 days ago. It doesn't last long! No one wanted to cut into it! Take a look at this cake:

Mini "dinner Roll" Chili Bowls

This is more a method versus a recipe I guess. I love chili and who doesn't. My friends love chili, but sometimes I like it as a side dish rather then a big bowl of chili. So why not do something easy. We have all seen chili or soups in bread bowls, so why not an appetizer bread bowl.
Well, I made mini bread bowls once, 38 of them, from scratch, what a pain. But what a success. I stuffed them with white bean chili, another time black bean chili. So, I'm not gonna give you any chili recipes, I would rather have you use your favorite one. There a hundreds of great recipes out there.
Fill these small bowls with some grated cheese, thick chili and topped with sour cream which make an amazing easy appetizer and a big hit at parties. 2-3 bites or use a fork they are fun and get "gobbled" up before you can put more out. -- posted by SarasotaCook

Blueberry Lavender Pie Filling for Canning

Enjoy a taste of summer in the middle of the winter with this easy canning recipe. The following is for one quart jar, which easily fills one pie. Multiply it to use as many berries as you can get your hands on. I also add fresh lavender flowers since I've got a great local lavender farm, but if you do, please be careful to use them sparingly as they can quickly overpower the berry taste. If you are unsure on how to use lavender, read up online first. *DO NOT SUBSTITUTE CLEAR JEL*! This is important. You probably won't find it at your local grocery store, but you can easily order it online. I found mine at a specialty candy and cake decorating store. -- posted by PDXChef

Realistic Fake Blood

I learned how to make this while working at a haunted house. I've made it every year since. There are no specific measurements to this recipe so all measurements are loose guidelines. You also have two different colors off blood. The first color is when blood touches oxygen, which is the color you see when you cut yourself. You can get this color with only 1-2 drops of blue food coloring. The second color is when blood has not touched air. You normally see this color when blood is drawn into a test tube. you can get this color by adding 2-5 drops of blue food coloring. You can add chunky peanut butter to it, it gives it a nice gory texture, it also makes it taste pretty good. Don't let the colors mentioned here curb your imagination. You could make alien, robot, plant, or zombie blood as well just by using different combinations of colors. Take note that the food coloringin the blood will stain fabric, also when the blood dries it is very sticky so take note of your hands when touching near areas where it has been applied. -- posted by Spire

Red and Black Candy Apples

This is a fabulous Halloween creation that I fell in love with and had to keep safe (as in not losing the recipe!). It's from mattbites.com (http://mattbites.com/2009/10/13/adams-scary-apples/) and I unashamedly stole it word for word. You'll find some amazing photo's of these apples there too. All credit goes to Matt and Adam, and they deserve it in truckloads!

"*A Note About The Black Apples:* Lighter colored apples (Granny Smith, Golden Delicious) work well in making the red appear bright and glassy; darker apples like red delicious help the black candy appear as dark as possible. Muy spooky!

Also, Adam made one batch with red food coloring and after he had a few red apples he reheated the candy mixture and added black food coloring. Adding black to red will make it darker. He repeated the dipping process. Black food coloring can be found online or at specialty baking stores."
Do Not take the times I gave as gospel they are a complete guess. IMPORTANT:

Chicken 65 Curry

This sticky, spicy chicken curry is deliciously sweet and packs just the right amount of heat. It is to be scooped up with warm, chewy naan, then licked off of fingers.Your first step is to hunt down some curry leaves. Their flavour is irreplaceable in this dish - a bit nutty, warm, and citrusy. Used a lot in South Indian cooking, they have nothing to do with “curry powder” which is a blend of spices.Start by browning the chicken in a heavy skillet - make sure the oil is good and hot and the chicken has been patted dry before you put it in the pan. Don’t flip it until it releases easily - if it is sticking, leave it - it will tear if you try and turn it before it is ready. Next, cook the onions gently over low heat for about 10 minutes to coax out the sweetness. Then add the spices to the pan to saute before the liquid is added. These three steps have a big flavour impact.
As far as curries go, the ingredient list is very short. Which makes it a great curry for beginners, if you can track down some curry leaves at an Indian grocer.
Tessa's Homemade Vanilla

If your've never made your own vanilla you've got to try it. It's nothing like the store bought kind, not even good quality pure extracts (and it's way cheaper). People will wonder what happened to your baking. It goes from average to incredible as soon as you start using this vanilla. You can use more than is usually called for in a recipe because there isn't any of that bitter after taste. Just make sure that if you're using lots you cut back slightly on some of the other liquid. It also makes a good Christmas present. You can try it using any sort of hard liquor you want, I've simply listed my preference. Also, Make sure you're using Vanilla beans from Madagascar, the cheaper ones from Mexico aren't true vanilla beans are actually toxic. You can reuse the beans up to three times (just let it steep a little longer each time) and once they've been all used up you can dry them and add them to your sugar. They'll still release flavour. The cook time refers to the time it takes to steep it, I always cheat and start using it early though. -- posted by TessaDerus

Gotta try these! :) Be sure to use paper liners in the muffin tins and spray them with nonstick spray; otherwise, they will crumble when you peel off the liners. This recipe also makes great mini muffins; just shorten the baking time by 5 minutes.
Compliment Jar--Kid's Style

From spatulatta.com Everyone needs to be told how well they're doing or how wonderful they are. Moms are no different. Sometimes mom might need a compliment when she's feeling blue or just has too much work to get done. Here's a gift that will keep on giving all year long.

You can help perk mom up by making this compliment jar. Fill it with 20 compliments that she can have whenever she needs one.
http://www.spatulatta.com/recipes/6-mothers-day-2008/27-compliment-jar

Because RZ would not recognize QUART JAR WITH LID or SCISSORS or 1 PHOTO OF YOURSELF, I am putting it here. ASK PERMISSION BEFORE CUTTING UP THE PHOTO.

This basic idea could be varied easily-why not for older people in the nursing home with knock knock jokes or something? But use an unbreakable container instead of glass. Or maybe tasks that you are reasonably able to do? The spatulatta site also had some excellent lessons for teachers, e.g. an insect body lesson. -- posted by WiGal

Escargot Vol-Au-Vent. Garlic Butter Snails in Mini Vol-Au-Vents

Garlicky buttered snails served in little light vol-au-vent cases, what a treat for all snail lovers! Living in France gives me access to some wonderful escargots, as well as superb garlic and butter too. These are just brilliant when served as appetisers for New Year or any other festive gathering. The beauty of these over the classic snails served in a baker or in their shells, is that you can eat the WHOLE thing! EVERY single bit of that naughty but exceedingly nice garlic and herb butter, all in one amazing mouthful! If you are unable to get hold of mini vol-au-vents, I have posted an alternative way to make your own little puff pastry cases, using readymade pastry for ease of preparation! Allow 2 to 3 per person if these are being served with other nibbles and appetisers.
Frozen Festive Vodka or Tequila Bottles With Herbs and Berries

Another GREAT Jamie Oliver recipe, and one that I am preparing for New Year's Eve! Jamie says you can use any spirits or liquor, but he suggestes vodka and tequila in his recipe. These bottles look SO festive and pretty, I plan to use holly, berries, bay leaves, fruit slices, ivy and woody herbs for my bottles this year. DO check that the liquor bottle fits INSIDE the plastic water bottle first! This recipe idea for serving liquor originates from Scandinavia.
Vanilla Vodka Almond Jigglers

This recipe for vegetarian-friendly, alcoholic almond gelatin jigglers (think Jello Jigglers meets Jello shots) combines vanilla vodka, uses seaweed-derived gelatin called agar-agar (as opposed to nondescript gelatin, which is likely to be animal-derived), and reduces paper/plastic waste (no cups). The ratio of water to alcohol is 1:1, so these jigglers are quite alcoholic! For better taste/less alcohol, you might consider reducing the amount of alcohol to 1 1/2 cups and increasing either the amount of water or milk to 2 1/2 cups (I would increase the milk, for more body and color). Of course, it's all a matter of personal taste and preference. The agar-agar powder can be found at your local South East Asian market. -- posted by Thuha

Barbeque Deviled Eggs

This is the Neely's spin on a great Southern tradition. The sweet, tangy flavor of the barbecue sauce blends surprisingly will with rich, creamy egg yolks. Topped with thinly sliced scallions, these eggs are perfect for a picnic, a party, brunch or dinner, not to mention game nights! -- posted by Sharon123

Spicy Tomato Soup With Avocado Relish

The Neely's say this is their kind of soup-it has plenty of atitude! A little heat gives it a smoky undertone and a garnish of avocado relish balances the flavors! Serve with cornbread or a grilled cheese sandwich. From Down Home with the Neely's cookbook. -- posted by Sharon123
