Spicy Pumpkin Soup

This is a recipe from a German cookbook that my husband made, it is supposed to be Asian-style. We made some changes to it to fit our tastes more. It is a lot of work, but it is really wonderful, warm and filling. It is important to chop everything before you start. For the pumpkin seeds at the end, I would suggest making your own with Mirj's recipe with salt and cayenne pepper: http://www.recipezaar.com/Roasted-Pumpkin-Seeds-13549 Prep time includes the chopping. -- posted by Tea Girl

Glazed Roasted Chestnuts

Yes! Hot roasted chestnuts need only a touch of salt. But once cooled this is the way to reheat them adding more sweet nutty flavor. To roast chestnut check out Recipe #108746 or buy jarred shelled chestnuts.
Chestnut Stuffing With Pancetta and Fennel

I love chestnuts! This is difficult because I don't love preparing them & I really dislike getting chestnuts that turn out to be moldy. To avod the dissappointment of moldy nuts & the pain of burned fingers I will splurge & get jarred chestnuts. They are spendy so they fall into the "very special occasions" category. Oh so good. I jumped on this recipe when I read it in The Seattle Times. They attribute it to "Sunday Suppers at Lucques: Seasonal Recipes from Market to Table" by Suzanne Goin with Teri Gelber. Thank you Suzanne & Teri.
Coconut-Orange Thumb Print Cookies

Adding this to my holiday cookie trays. Adapted from a recipe in The Seattle Times provided by Lynne Rossetto Kasper. Something wonderful about orange at Christmas. Coconut is always so festive too. The article noted this dough really benefits from resting overnight in the refrigerator so start the day before. Over working this dough seems to make tough cookies - think I'll be using cake flour. Prep time does not include overnight dough chilling. -- posted by Buster's friend

Bill Yosse's White House Apple Pie

The Mama's Thanksgiving Maple Sweet Potatoes and Apples

This recipe is DEMANDED when we have family dinners at my Mama's house. It's delicious! My sister and I actually got into an arguement over who got the leftovers.
Recipe courtesy of Roberta Larson Duyff, MS, RD, FADA, CFCS, in Cooking Healthy Across America. As a traditional American favorite, succotash is typically a cooked dish made with lima beans, corn kernels and chopped red and green peppers. Although lima beans are used in New England and generally define a succotash, this version is special for its fiber-rich canned soybeans, lending it a Midwestern flavor.

I can't stand those yucky, overly sweet sweet potatoes that we here in the south usually serve. This is a better option for those of us who enjoy sweet potatoes without all the sugar. I did retain the pecan topping but you can probably cut it back to 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Enjoy! -- posted by ThreeGoodCooks

Grandma Linda's Thanksgiving Dressing

My mother has made this dressing for our family since I was a little girl. It is the only Thanksgiving dressing my family will eat. I would weigh 500 pounds if I made this dressing as often as I craved it! Although I know most people prefer holiday recipes that have been passed down in their own families, I hope you will enjoy this Thanksgiving dressing recipe that the McWell's have enjoyed for many, many years! My mother used Jiffy corn bread mix in the old days, then later switched to Marie Calender's corn bread mix. In this recipe, I am using the "sweet corn muffins" recipe on a box of Albers Yellow Corn Meal. Because I am using Albers brand corn meal, all ingredients up to "12 Tbs butter" are for this particular brand cornmeal. If using any other cornbread mix, follow directions on the box, then add ingredients beginning with "1 Lb bacon." This recipe is for Thanksgiving so it makes quite a large amount. Thanks Mom! -- posted by Mrs Cook

Thanksgiving Pumpkin Blondies

From The Best 50 collection of cookbooks. This is straight out of the Brownies and Blondies edition. A little of this goes a LONG way! Not really a blondie by my standards, but it passes off as an interesting bar-type dessert. PLEASE NOTE: Because most people are not really used to tasting molasses, it may take a few bites to fall in love with this recipe. I did not like it at all when I first tried it. But, after giving it a second bite, I found I can't get enough of it. This seemed to happen with EVERYONE who tried it. So, please, before giving an unhappy review, try it again. If you find that the molasses is just too much to handle, try cutting the topping ingredients in half. It really does make a lot of topping as it is. I hope you enjoy this! -- posted by the_cookie_lady

Sweet and Savory Squash Stew

This recipe combines some of the most iconic tastes of fall--butternut and acorn squash, sweet potato, apple--in a sweet and savory pot of deliciousness. I recommend serving with a dollop of sour cream. And cornbread.

All amounts for seasonings are estimates--I tend to season as I go and according to taste; I have a feeling these are underestimates. I will be sure to update the next time I make this with adjusted amounts. I used a smoked (pre-cooked) ham steak for this; I have also made it with other kinds of ham, with turkey sausage, and without meat altogether with positive results. -- posted by Tlharin

Holiday Nut Roll (Americanized Croatian Nut Roll)

While similar to other nut roll recipes, this filling is unique because it uses no egg whites or lemon and includes a delicious "Americanization" of the Slavic recipe by adding--whiskey! It adds a fantastic additional flavor; feel free to split the filling before adding whiskey if you'd like to reserve some spirit-free for the kids (though it cooks off and I've never met a kid who didn't like this).

I have baked this for Thanksgiving for years. Everyone requests these yams over the marshmallow variety. I'm not sure where I collected the recipe or why it is named. -- posted by Boise Boy

I saw something similar to this recipe in our local newspaper last year, but lost the original. My kids loved it as did my gf. Super simple to make. -- posted by Ratu Moko
