Christmas Angel Hershey Kiss Ornament Craft

I realize this isn't technically a recipe - but it does include food! It's an angel made using a Hershey's kiss. Very cute. These are fun for the tree, add to a package, or just leave one someones desk. I had a hard time finding the directions to make these...so I decided to post it here for everyone. I also wouldn't give these to children since it contains a straight pin. Just a decoration! Happy Holidays! -- posted by Jennibear

Green & Camomile Tea Skin Soother

Green Tea will tighten pores, provide anti-aging benefits and is ideal for soothing troubled or sunburned skin. This comes from the Herb Companion Website and is added for the Comfort Cafe. This infusion should be refrigerated if not used within 3 days. Adendum: After reading up on camomile tea, I've added it to the infusion. -- posted by BakinBaby

Worked for Me Safe Ant Kill (Homemade Ant Killer)

Each time I went into the kitchen, I saw ants all over the counter. I'd spray bleach cleaner on them, wipe them up and next time I'd go in the kitchen, they'd be back! I didn't want to use anything toxic with kids and pets around, so I scoured the web and combined 3 different ideas. Cheap and effective! -- posted by Karen=^..^=

Simple Mosquito Bite Remedy

I learned this from one of my high school teachers. I remember she had told my mom about how missionaries will sometimes carry large amounts of baking soda with them on their trips for many different uses. This is one of them, and it works surprisingly well if you use it right.

NOTES: Works best on fresh mosquito bites and will sometimes make them disappear altogether. Will work on older ones by diminishing their size and itchiness. Do not use on open sores. Will help with other insect bites, but will sting badly on certain types such as ant bites. You can try it, but don't say I didn't warn you. You may also use salt (equal amount) in place of the baking soda, but I don't remember if it works as well, and it may sting more. The baking soda method might sting a little, but no worse then Benadryl sprays, etc. Be patient. It's best to just leave it on until you forget it's there and the bite goes away. Once it does, you may wash the baking soda off with water. Recipe can be easily doubled, quadrupled, etc. Just use equal amounts. -- posted by Ransomed by Fire

Removing Static Electricity from Your Home

Cold weather and low humidity can cause you to walk around the house getting shocked by static electricity, especially from your carpets. You can easily and inexpensively remove the charge from the carpets with this simple home remedy. We use ultra downy clean breeze, but any good quality fabric softener will work fine. This also makes a great 'faux-febreez' to help make your home smelling fresh & clean. :) Other great things this spray does: Spray some on a dry paper towel, and toss it in the dryer! It's more economical than dryer sheets, :) -- posted by 2Bleu

Garlic Lemonade for Colds, Cough

I got this off of Welltellme.com. Even if it doesn't help for colds, it tates pretty good! Drink it warm throughout the day. You don't wan't to kill the healing properties of the garlic, so if you have to reheat, put it in a mug and simmer it in a small pot of water. I added hte peppermint and I think it was a good choice. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Rose Water Facial Mist

Use this anytime you need to rehydrate your skin. In the summertime I keep a bottle of this mist chilled in the refrigerator. Much less expensive than the HomeHealth brand I've been buying at the natural food stores all these years. Rose water can be found in Middle Eastern/Indian markets, specialty/gourmet/natural food stores and online (the brand I use is Cortas from Lebanon). It is not expensive and a little goes a long way. -- posted by Cookgirl

Cocoa Butter Antibacterial Moisturizing Lotion

I think I got this off of Delicious Living, but not sure. I'm not sure why it says "antibacterial" but this can be used on face or body, I'm sure. Probably too oily for oily skin, though. It says, "Cocoa butter is naturally water repellent and thus protective of the skin; it is especially useful for dehydrated skin." I made a modified version of this with shea butter, which I will also post. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

From Delicious Living. Glycerin attracts moisture; that's whay makes it such a great moisturizer - it brings in moisture from the air to the skin - so it can actually increase the moisture in the skin by adding water from the air. This is great for oily skin. It soaks in pretty quickly and feels cool. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Shea Butter Moisturizing Lotion

I took another recipe that I posted and modified it to use shea butter. Shea butter is so good for dry skin, as is aloe vera gel. This is great on lips and dry hands. Although the original recipe was meant for face, I have oily skin, so it would be too much. I will be putting this on my hands overnight with gloves. The peppermint oil is antibacterial and helps cover up the smell of the raw shea butter. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

This is from Dan Wallace's"The Natural Formula Book for Home and Yard". Please do not use this on soft metals such as silver and do not use on jewelry. Also, the diatomaceous earth can be found at swimming pool or garden supply houses. Do not inhale this powder, so handle it gently and keep it downwind from you.
Natural Wool Pre-Dye (Mordant)

From Dan Wallace's "The Natural Formula Book for Home and Yard", this recipe is applied to wool after the mordant. "The mordant is a substance that acts as a binding agent and fixes the color to the wool. Without a mordant, most dyes will fade with exposure to light or water." If the wool feels sticky from the mordant, rinse it well before proceeding to the dyeing process.
Sparkling Fireplace Glass

We have a fireplace with glass doors. "How beautiful!" we thought when we bought the place. It didn't take long to figure out it was a curse rather than a blessing. They fog over with only one fire and within a week can be black and opaque. We tried many different techniques and even resorted to scraping it with a razor blade at times.
I think I read this tip in a book full of similar tips. I didn't really believe that it would work but was pleasantly surprised! Cleanup has gone from a several hour affair to about 15 minutes.

You can disregard the amounts... the recipe was rejected for lack of quantities originally so I had to add them to get it accepted. -- posted by Chef Tweaker

Organic Garlic Fire Spray for Gardens

This is an organic solution that will take care of all the pesky creatures in your garden; insect or four legged. I found it on an organic gardening site recently, and it worked so well, I had to share it! Evaluate the pest situation after applying and adjust the water dilution as necessary. It will be pungent when first applied, but the smell will dissipate. Spray every few days until pests are gone. Respray after rain, and about every week to ten days thereafter. -- posted by Miss_Elaine

Homemade Fragrance

In order to make this all-natural fragrance, you must use a CARRIER OIL, that is, an oil that has no fragrance of its own. Great options are as follows: sweet almond, grape seed, avocado, sesame, sunflower, jojoba, walnut, peanut, and pecan. Use whichever essential oils you like, but I would not recommend fragrance oils since they have a lot of alcohol and chemicals in them.
Shampoo and Conditioner

If you don't want to use the ones with chemicals, and don't want to pay ridiculously high prices for herbal shampoos as the healthfood stores, then this is your recipe! To add herbs to your shampoo, simply make a tea with the herbs you want, and use that instead of water. Dr. Bronner's is the soap I use for my shampoo and hand washes, but any liquid castile soap you can find will probably be fine. The apple cider vinegar rinse should be kept in the fridge or mixed beforehand to use in the shower. TIPS: To keep your cut flowers fresh you need to give them water & food, protect them from decay or infection plus keep them cool and out of direct sunlight. Try to keep your flowers away from ripe fruit as the gases will shorten their life. Keep them in a cool area and away from direct sunlight. Flowers with milky latex-containing sap such as poinsettia, heliotrope, hollyhock, euphorbia and poppy need special treatment The milky sap prevents water loss by the stem but in cut flowers it prevents the absorption of water. To prevent this problem dip the bottom tips (--1/2 inch) of the stems in boiling water for about 30 seconds or by flashing the tips of the stems with a lighter or other flame. -- posted by Dreamer in Ontario

Homemade Soap

At soapcalc.net I entered the ingredients that were available to me. This is the calculation that seemed to have the best properties. Cure time will vary according to the humidity of the curing area, but don't count on using any of this for at least a month. With soap, the longer it sits, the better it gets (within reason)! NOTE: All measurements are weight, so use a scale and not measuring cups! Use of a candy thermometer is recommended for ease of preparation and best results. Also, please read the directions prior to making this. Don't be put off by the length; my degree in English is often a curse.
Compliment Jar--Kid's Style

From spatulatta.com Everyone needs to be told how well they're doing or how wonderful they are. Moms are no different. Sometimes mom might need a compliment when she's feeling blue or just has too much work to get done. Here's a gift that will keep on giving all year long.

You can help perk mom up by making this compliment jar. Fill it with 20 compliments that she can have whenever she needs one.
http://www.spatulatta.com/recipes/6-mothers-day-2008/27-compliment-jar

Because RZ would not recognize QUART JAR WITH LID or SCISSORS or 1 PHOTO OF YOURSELF, I am putting it here. ASK PERMISSION BEFORE CUTTING UP THE PHOTO.

This basic idea could be varied easily-why not for older people in the nursing home with knock knock jokes or something? But use an unbreakable container instead of glass. Or maybe tasks that you are reasonably able to do? The spatulatta site also had some excellent lessons for teachers, e.g. an insect body lesson. -- posted by WiGal

Natural Drain Unclogger

Based on a recipe from my Shaw’s grocery store’s Wild Harvest November 2009 holiday pamphlet. It says, “Along with potato peels and onion skins often comes a clogged sink. Thankfully, there is a way to unclog sinks without sending toxic chemicals down the drain and out into the environment.” Cook time is boiling water time.
Honey for Burns

Some properties in honey might contribute to its ability to fight infection and promote healing. Its high sugar content allows it to draw infection and fluid from wounds by a process called “osmosis.” Raw honey prevents bacterial growth through its acidic pH and through the work of an enzyme that produces small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. -- posted by ~Rita~

There is an interesting anecdote attached to this one. One summer, we found a mysterious and attractive wildflower out back of my bf's mom's house. Later the same summer, I contracted a horrific case of poison ivy.

Close to three weeks of scratching, squirming, Calamine-encrusted misery ensued. During a heatwave, no less. I tried everything available over the counter to no avail.

Reading up on wildflowers out of simple curiousity - I fortuitously discovered this plant I'd been curious about was called Jewelweed, or Spotted Touch- Me-Not. The field guide I was reading metioned that it's considred an excellent treatment for poison ivy. Right in our own backyard!

After doing some research on how to prepare the stuff for use, I found the following instructions at www.altnature.com. It worked within a couple of days after everything else had failed. That it could be frozen as ice cubes had added benefits on a really hot day. Best of luck with this and please let me know if it works for you, too. : ) -- posted by Cecily Parsley
