Cholesterol Remedy

I recieve emails from Prevention Online. These come weekly and have lots of interesting articles. This was "Posted: Apr 25, 2004". I wanted a safe place to keep it and to share it with the people of Recipezaar. This is posted in the Health Discussions: Conquering Cholesterol. Here is a link for Prevention for cholesterol: http://www.prevention.com/cda/channel2002/0,2469,s1-683,00.html . I like to find tonics and cures that are affordable and use natural ingredients. Sometimes we need prescriptions, but a little prevention may just go a long way. I see a pattern of age and weight as contrubuting factors, besides genes and this is a natural occurance for so many of us. Even if we are within a healthy weight range, we may not be the weight we were when we were teenagers and 20 somethings. I'm thinking this contributes individually and am interested in finding out. I hope this helps somebody! -- posted by KissaMew

Peanut Butter, Banana and Sultanas Sandwiches or Pinwheel Style

Yummy little snack for little kids or big kids. Alternatively, you can use either two slices of the same bread (either two white bread or two wholemeal bread) it's just to make it look pretty and healthy for kids. The pinwheel style is difficult to do without making a mess so if you don't like a mess or a challenge. You can use two more slice of bread and place them on the top, this will then be a serving size for two. Please be careful with nuts, we don't give Little Miss (DD) nuts because her cousin has a severe nut allergy. -- posted by Chef floWer

Strawberry Banana Split Dessert (No Bake)

Recipe is from Taste of Home's April/May 1999 edition. They call it a "cake", but there is no flour or cake mix. . .definitely more of a light dessert!!! This is delightful and perfect for spring/summer picnics and parties. Young and old alike love this one! NOTE: Cooking time listed is actually chill time in the fridge, not actually cooking time since this is a no bake recipe. -- posted by JanuaryBride

Chilled Cucumber, Avocado and Shrimp Soup

A delightfully refreshing chilled soup -- this recipe is perfect for a hot summer day, a BBQ or even dinner party. The presentation is simple yet elegant, and the soup itself is so good and easy to prepare. There are other avocado/cucumber soup recipes posted here at Zaar, but this one is different and contains an additional ingredient: shrimp! :)

This recipe was adapted from a similar one found in HomeBasics magazine. Also note that "Cook Time" is the time required for proper chilling. -- posted by grumblebee

Superfruit Smoothie

My absolute favorite smoothie - banana, kiwi, mango, peach, and clementine! When fresh fruit is in season, I like to play around with different combinations, but this is the one that I make the most. Not only does it taste absolutely amazing, but it is loaded with natural nutrition too; Vitamins B & C, potassium, dietary fiber, omega-3 F.A.s, antioxidants, calcium...much more wholesome (and yummier!) than a vitamin pill in my opinion. And because of the fiber and protein, it is filling enough to be a hearty snack or a meal substitute. Before you get too excited, a quick word of warning about the kiwi - if you eat too much at once it can make your mouth feel tingly and raw (yes... I've had this happen. I can't help myself!) I hope you like this smoothie as much as I do! :) -- posted by Oenophilly

Strawberry Cream Cheese Snacks

I was trying to find something to snack on one night, and I remembered reading another recipe about strawberries dipped in brown sugar, so I came up with this. Amounts are approximate, since you really just dip the cut sides of the strawberries in the sugar, and spread cream cheese on crackers... so it depends on how much sugar and cream cheese you like. This is the first recipe I have published on here, mostly because it's the kind of easy thing I like to find on the site and I didn't see anything like it. -- posted by Queen Roachie

Peach and Cucumber Salsa

Low calorie, fat free vegan recipe from Whole Foods; it is highly rated on their website. They suggest serving it atop grilled fish but I think it would also be great with chicken or pork tenderloin. You can make it up to 4 hours ahead of serving, just keep it in the refrigerator. I think mango and a splash of OJ would be a great addition to this recipe as well! NOTE: I just made this recipe and I added the OJ for a touch of sweetness and added a couple drops of jalapeno sauce for more kick. I also didn't care for the mint, so I changed that to optional. . .the basil was nice I thought. -- posted by JanuaryBride

Ensalada Taracita

Spicy and sassy, this Tex-Mex influenced salad tastes alive and looks alluring. The idea begins with a common go-to salsa salad, but my improvisations make it one of a kind. Have fun with flavors as you add and subtract your own favorite fruits, veggies, and dressings. I don't use a dressing as the fruit juice and pico de gallo usually add plenty of flavorful moisture. A mango vinaigrette would be nice though. -- posted by taradelyce85
