Pistachio Caramels

Anti-Mushroom Green Bean Casserole

I have always disliked getting mushrooms in my green bean casserole and I am picky about onions. I combined ideas from my mother and a very good friend along with my own spin on onion preparation to make a very tasty new way to enjoy green bean casserole. This recipe can be easily doubled or tripled to accomodate larger groups. When you prepare the onions, you will want to fry them till a dark brown, just short of burning them--some pieces may even be a little crisp. -- posted by ChefboiR2D2

Amish Vanilla Pie

Syrup pie (Treacle Tart) has always been my husband's favorite from his English mum. This Amish Vanilla Pie recipe from Marcia Adam's "New Recipes from Quilt Country" is similar in flavor but has more filling and a crumb topping. It tastes like a pecan pie but more vanilla tasting (great for people like my husband who likes pecan pie, but hates the nuts or for people who think they "should" like shoo-fly pie, but hate the molasses). It cuts beautifully. -- posted by Roxygirl in Colorado

Beth's Melt in Your Mouth Barbecue Ribs (Oven)

I almost didn't want to share this recipe because this is one of the dishes that I make that keep my sons coming back home! These can be done with baby back or regular pork ribs. I have also made split chickens this way. The ribs are tender, moist and just slide off of the bone. I know that your family will love them just as much as my family does.
I noticed that some are unable to find hickory smoked salt.. You can use smoked paprika or just brush the ribs with liquid smoke before applying the rub. The smoke flavor is nice because it helps give the ribs a cooked on the grill flavor.
Also, the easiest way to remove the membrane is to work a spoon or I use the tips of my kitchen sheers into the bottom center of the membrane, work it back and forth to form a "pocket" then I slide my thumbs in and work the membrane off from the center outward to the ends. -- posted by Not-2-Sweet

This recipe is different because it's sooo very creamy! It's easy, fast and makes my kids ask for more! Chicken can be used in place of the turkey, and you can substitute 2 small cans of chopped mushrooms for the fresh.
Pride of Deer Camp Barbecue Sauce-Marinade

If you watched The Frugal Gourmet on PBS years ago when his show was the best, you may have seen Jeff Smith make this barbecue sauce. It's a very old recipe (not one of his originally) and it makes a great pork or beef rib marinade. If I recall correctly, Jeff Smith said an old woman who ran a hotel in Chicago gave him the recipe. Anyway, it will keep for a long time, stored in the refrigerator. Another great use for this blend is as a Bloody Mary base -- see directions below. This sauce is much thinner than most barbecue sauces and the recipe makes a LOT as listed! Enjoy. big pat. -- posted by Bone Man

Creamy Green Bean Casserole

This is my own version of Green Bean Casserole, It uses a different ingredient, but I think it's the best. I hope You will like it too :) This recipe is what I make for holidays, but you can certainly scale it down to suit the amount you want to make. It does make less than it seems though, especially if you use the French style green beans (not to mention how good left overs are). Exact measurements aren't really neccesary though so don't be afraid to make less or more. For one can beans I'd use 2oz cream cheese and 1/3 can of cream of chicken. -- posted by PickleLover

The recipe is simple but a bit tempermental, follow the directions carefully. I don't really know how long it takes from start to finish.
Lazy Grilled Chicken

I had a friend call me one evening to request a chicken grilling recipe for the following day. Off the top of my head, I quickly mentally evaluated the key ingredients of a good marinade, and knowing how lazy this guy was, I just told him to go buy some cheap Italian Salad Dressing, marinate the chicken overnight, and then grill it. He called me the next evening with a big WOW! So I did the same thing (and have done so many times since) and it makes for some really great grilled chicken. I sort of tweaked it later with the mustard but it's fine without it. Prep time includes marinating time. Enjoy! -- posted by Bone Man

Smooth As S I L K Cream Cheese Danish

Growing up with five brothers (no sisters) was great, but I really wanted some girly fellowship within the family. A few years ago, my sisters-in-law and I started getting together for a yearly SILK Weekend. SILK stands for Sisters-In-Law Kerr (my maiden name). We rotate the hosting duties. This year (2007) we met near Madison, toured Wollersheim Winery (bought a "few" bottles!), lunched & gabbed for hours at The Blue Spoon (Culver's corporate headquarters) in Sauk Prairie, completed an aMAZE-ing after-dark flashlight tour through the Treinen Farm Corn Maze near Lodi. This recipe is what our SILK-host served for breakfast on Saturday morning. It truly is silky and creamy and outrageously delicious.
Cabin Fever Game Night Taco Dip

It's a free-for-all of board games, cards, and fun. Great for fellowship and laughter and wonderful memories.
Mom's Old Fashion Brisket and Vegetables

One pot dinner at it's very best. This recipe brings back so many memories of my Mom cooking Sunday dinner in the kitchen. The house always smelled outstanding while this dish cooked and we all looked forward to it hitting the table. She always put this in the oven at 1pm on the dot to serve at 5pm with steamy hot, buttery, homemade dinner rolls to sop up the wonderful pan sauce made while the brisket cooked. Mom always froze the leftover meat with the delicious pan sauce and the next Sunday roasted off new veggies and reheated the meat and pan gravy. You can substitute a nice beef roast for the brisket. -- posted by Humble Bee

New England Style Buttermilk Hot Dog Bun's (Lobster Rolls)

After a great deal of searching for this style of roll for the 2008 4th of July Holiday, I fiddled with the recipe and came up with a much better version. I hope that you enjoy these as much as we do. They are great rolls! Rich in eggs and butter, this dough is soft and tender and does not require excessive kneading. It is easy to make by hand and even easier if you have an electric mixer with a dough hook. Please note that when I make these rolls I use the 'dough setting' on my bread maker to mix the ingredients and get through the first rise. Please follow your bread makers instructions for adding ingredients if you choose to use your bread maker, as well. The times listed reflect making the buns manually. -- posted by Humble Bee

This is the wheat version of the Recipe supplied by Sullivan Street Bakery and printed in the NY Times, this bread recipe so insanely brilliant - no sticky fingers, no doughy mess, no intricate measuring, no complicated kneading. Totally hands-off. The crust is thin, crisp and snaps as you cut into the loaf. The interior of the bread holey, chewy, airy and light.
Many cultures have holiday breads. German Christmas bread goes by many different names in German: Stollen, Dresden Stollen, Strutzel, Striezel, Stutenbrot, or Christstollen. The traditional German Christmas cake, is a colorful collection of nuts, raisins, currants, candied orange and lemon peel, traditional spices of Christmas such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, mace or cloves, brandy or rum and lots of butter.
Ohio Pudding

A Fannie Farmer (1965 edition) recipe. I'm from Ohio, but this has not been traditional in my family, tho currants were always used for holiday baking and decorating cookies. My paternal grandmother was known for her suet pudding, which I would never make because of the cholesterol. This is a great substitute, and there's something magical that happens when the fruits and veggies are added to the dry ingredients. Fannie wants you to serve it with Ohio Sauce (a variation of Hard Sauce) but I don't think this is necessary. We serve it like fruitcake but find that it's more widely accepted. -- posted by ccferne

Fourth of July Chili

A recipe I began "modifying" years ago when I got it from a relative. I believe it has been tweaked until absolutely perfect. there are 2 distinct seperate groups of chili fanatics in the world that differ greatly in their opinions of the perfect chili. some like it sweet, some like it spicy. This recipe will have both coming back for more! The initial mild sweetness slowly gives way to a smoky spicy flavor that really only comes on slowly after you swallow. Not to worry, the chipotle psice is easily doused with a beverage of your choice. Enjoy. -- posted by peach1705

Tangy, Zesty Oil and Vinegar Potato Salad

The best potato salad you've never had. For when your craving that certain ZING from vinegar...I don't like regular potato salad. I don't like sweet relish, eggs, or miracle whip in my potato salad. The sharp onion with the vinegar balances the soft potato texture. Inexpensive and college budget approved.
Basic Garlic and Oil Sauce for Perfect Pasta (Rachael Ray)

If you like pasta, you're going to LOVE this recipe from Everyday With Rachael Ray's magazine (Oct '09). She has a "secret ingredient" that adds an unexpected zest to the ordinary ingredients: anchovies. She notes in her recipe that " even if you think you don't like anchovies, you should try this recipe--it'll change your mind." Further, she points out that "once you heat anchovies, they stop tasting like fish and start tasting more like salted nuts." So: try it, you'll like it! If you must, don't say anything to the diners--and ask them if they like it, before you reveal the "secret ingredient." -- posted by Debber

BTW, you can add cooked and chopped giblets and neck to this dressing, if desired. Just simmer them in water or chicken broth for several minutes or so to ensure they're properly cooked before adding to mix. -- posted by Toby's Foods

Easy way to make baked macaroni. This stuff is cholesterolly goodness. It will kill you dead, which is why I only make it at the holidays. -- posted by Leeandra

Julie's Pecan Caramel Bars

These are so good, they've been the hit of the party everywhere I take them. Inspired by PanNan's recipe #37846, but tweaked a bit to suit my family's preference. (I can't tell any difference between baker's chocolate and chocolate chips, but evidently my family can.) -- posted by puppitypup
