Elizabethan English Herb and Flower Salad With Honey Dressing

An old Elizabethan salad recipe, but with an air of modernity about it, as our interest increases in herbal and floral remedies in today's busy, stressful and hectic world. I have made some suggestions about which flowers and herbs to use - but PLEASE do check that the flowers and herbs you choose to use are edible!! The French also use flowers in their salads, and although the title suggests this to be an English recipe, this style of herbal and floral salad will have been very common throughout Medieval Europe. I serve this at the Auberge when the flowers and herbs are in season - freshly picked from my garden; it is always enjoyed with great relish and is a vibrant topic of dinner party conversation! It makes a lovely appetiser or can be served with the cheese course for an unusual and pretty accompaniment. Make sure that your flowers and herbs are insecticide free, and are not traffic polluted as well.........wipe them or wash them gently, allowing them to dry before using them. -- posted by French Tart

Petits Pois à La Française - French Style Peas

A delicious combination of peas, onions and lettuce which are gently poached in a buttery sauce with crème fraiche and vegetable stock; this classic French recipe is a wonderful way to serve tender little peas, petits pois. This recipe makes a delightful accompaniment to any type of main meal, and adds a real splash of colour. I have stated fresh OR frozen peas in the recipe - frozen peas can be used to great effect out of season. In the absence of small silverskin onions, spring onions (green onions) can be used, making this a very versatile recipe to serve throughout the year. Cut back on the butter if you are on a low fat diet - the taste will be less rich, but still as delicious! -- posted by French Tart

Balsamic Fried Eggs With Wilted Greens (In Under 10 Minutes)

This recipe is sooo fast and easy and adds a very interesting flavour dimension to simple fried eggs! You can use dandelion greens, beet greens, escarole, or arugula. I personally love arugula.
If you like onions, you can add some chopped onions to the pan with the garlic.

Chasen's Chopped Salad

Chasen's Restaurant is well known as a part of Hollywood history, however, it's fame was broader than that. Every American president since 1945 (until the restaurant closed in 1995) ate a Chasen's meal. Even though Franklin D. Roosevelt did not dine there, Eleanor did.
It was the restaurant where Ronald Reagan courted Nancy Davis for two and a half years; and the place where he proposed. After Reagan became governor of California, and went on to became president, a special back door was installed at Chasen's just for them.
Their favorite booth, where he proposed, is now in the Reagan presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
This chopped salad was a popular item during this era, and yet it seems very modern. -- posted by lynnski / LA

Mediterranean Wrap for One

Had this at a baby shower. It is simple and delicious! Serve with olives and feta. NOTE: Tabouli is a bulgur/parsley salad. There are about 30 recipes on this site if you would like to make your own. You can find prepared tabouli next to the hummus in the deli. You can also make your own hummus. In order to keep this quick and simple, this recipe uses prepared refrigerated mixes from the grocery store deli. -- posted by KelBel

Cranberry-Pear Green Salad

A great little salad to put together for a lite dinner or lunch, combining the sweetness of dried cranberries and cubed pear. This uses Miracle Whip salad dressing. You can use regular mayo, if you wish, but I'm not sure of the taste. For the croutons, instead of store-bought, you could use Recipe #222150. :) Along with lunches and dinners, this would be a great addition to potlucks, brunches, dinner parties, picnics, etc. -- posted by VickyJ

Lodge Salad Like Smokey Bones

This is my favorite thing to order at Smokey Bones, a place popular for BBQ and watching sports. Darden Restaurants closed a lot of the locations and sold the rest to another company in 2008. This is my own copycat version of the salad, not an official restaurant recipe. This is very filling even as a vegetarian salad without the chicken or shrimp; at Smokey Bones they give you an unrealistically huge portion - making this recipe only serve four. Use any dressing you like; I really love Recipe#318828 however it's not an exact replicate of Smokey Bones' dressing. -- posted by ~Jen~

This is mom's coleslaw recipe. She is always asked to make the slaw at every family function because she makes the best.
Artichoke Heart Salad

Whoever created this recipe called it "Mushroom Toss," which I never understood, since the mushrooms are no more important than the other ingredients in this salad. So I am re-naming it after the artichokes - equally random, I suppose, but they're more interesting than the mushrooms. (FYI: ignore the ounces on the ingredient list - I have no idea how many ounces a bag of spinach weighs, but the site needs the amount to be specific, so I made it up. This goes for the jar sizes, too - just use whatever you find in the supermarket) -- posted by Kishka

Mexican Layered Salad

This sounds like a light, Mexican version of the classic Seven-Layered Salad. You could add black beans, chicken breast, or other protein to make it more filling, if you wanted to serve it as a main-course salad. I think a mixture of sour cream and mayo would also be good in the dressing, and I think sliced olives would be nice on top, too. -- posted by Halcyon Eve

Bibb Salad With Basil Green Goddess Dressing

Green goddess dressing was invented in the 1920's at San Francisco's Palace Hotel as a tribute to William Archer's hit play, The Green Goddess. It gets it's bright green color from lots of fresh green herbs. This dressing was originally made with tarragon, but has been updated with basil, which actually has more flavor! Delicious on green salad, but also great served with vegetables like asparagus and broccoli. Adapted from the Barefoot Contessa at Home cookbook. -- posted by Sharon123

Veggie Sandwiches A.k.a. Veggimiches

I used to make these all the time in southern Cali for my BF. Now that I've relocated to the far North, certain fresh ingredients are harder to come by, so I haven't been able to make this sandwich in ages. I'm not sure where the "m" stems from in "veggiemich," that's just what we ended up calling it. :) The reason for mixing the mustard and dressing prior to spreading on the bread is to avoid uneven spreading while keeping the calorie count down. Everything can of course be omitted or replaced to your taste; you can even make it Atkins-friendly by making a lettuce pocket and omitting the bread, hehe! We loved using a lot of pepper for a nice kick. You can make it a more filling meal with other additions, too! ^_^ -- posted by FuzzyKiwi

Chilled Summer Lettuce, Lovage and Garden Pea Soup

A delightful and refreshing chilled soup for summer - this savoury soup takes its flavour from freshly chopped lovage leaves, which impart a savoury, lemony and celery-like taste. I like to serve this pale green soup in clear glass bowls for maximum impact, with a few chopped leaves sprinkled on top and a swirl of cream. This soup makes an elegant starter for any summer event or a light luncheon dish. Do not be tempted to add more lovage then is suggested, it is a very strong flavoured herb and can be overpowering if used with a heavy hand! -- posted by French Tart

Mixed Herb Salad With Borage : La Salade De Plusieurs Herbes

A delightful old French salad recipe, which uses fresh aromatic herbs with fresh lettuce leaves and a simple dressing. Serve this with poached salmon or cold chicken for an elegant dinner party dish. Adapted from a 16th century French translation of a book originally written in Latin in 1474. NB: Borage is an excellent culinary herb and can be used in a variety of ways. Borage is far better used fresh, as the flavour and colour deteriorate when dried and some essential oils lost. Traditional recipes recommend borage leaves and seeds, together with fennel in salads for increasing the milk supply in nursing mothers. The leaves and flowers are still added for flavour and garnish to wine cups, Pimms and gin-based summer cocktails and the flowers are still candied for confectionary as cake and ice cream decorations. -- posted by French Tart

El Torito Southwestern Caesar Salad

El Torito Restaurant's Caesar salad has been a popular favorite for decades; I obtained the recipe in 1994 when it was published in the Los Angeles Times and have made it many times since. The recipe contains some Mexican ingredients such as pepitas, which are roasted pumpkin seeds, avilable at Trader Joes, as well as at Mexican markets. The cotija cheese ia a Mexican grating cheese.
Grilled Fig & Arugula Salad With Gorgonzola Toasts

From Cooking Light's special on Monticello-inspired recipes. This looks like it's too fancy and complicated for me to make, but looks delicious if someone else would make it for me! ;) Or if you have an actual grill; I live in the ghetto and could put a holey trash can lid over the stove. I don't know what "peasant bread" is but I assume it'd be a small baguette type of bread. I'm not a fan of balsamic vinegar, I'd probably use red wine vinegar or a different kind of dressing, but posting as is for those who like it. BTW, you'll need at least 6 grilling skewers for this. Probably strong 8" metal ones that could pierce figs. I wonder if I could make this work with a portable George Foreman grill! -- posted by the80srule

Holubsti--Ukranian Cabbage Rolls

I spent 18 months in central Canada, serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While I was there, I fell in love with the people and the food, specifically Ukrainian and Filipino food. The cabbage rolls were my favorite, and when I returned to the US, I began searching for recipes, but could never find one that I liked. This recipe comes from me combining elements of two or three different recipes that I found. The resulting recipe is surprisingly easy--if a bit labor intensive.

I included instructions to make a sauce, but, if you run out of energy, the stuff in a can works just as well. If I want to do a homemade sauce, I usually do it a day or so in advance.,

By omitting the meat, this can be a vegetarian dish. By also omitting the sour cream and using margarine instead of butter, it can be vegan. -- posted by CorianneW
