Bacon Caramels

“Where would we be without salt?” – James Beard
I casually sprinkled the thick-cut Hempler’s bacon with cayenne before frying to a nearly blackened crisp. Once the caramel had reached its perfect molten temperature I stirred in a handful of the bacon then reserved the rest to get sprinkled on top. The caramel set beautifully. Some were cut and served as is while a select few were covered in tempered dark chocolate. All of them were devoured.

Christmas Cherry Nut Bread

This is so easy to make as you just put everything, except the cherries, in a bowl and mix it, adding the cherries last. It is so pretty and so good. It is nice with a cup of tea or for giving in a pretty little basket along with some tea. You could put a pretty tea cup in the basket, too. If you like fewer cherries, use the lesser amount; I like more so I use the whole jar. -- posted by Mimi in Maine

Fluffy "cut-Out" Sugar Cookies

Have you ever had those sugar cookies at publix that are really fluffy and cake like? Well hear is that recipe. I think its the sour cream that makes it so fluffy. I also roll them out maybe 1/4 in thick and under cook them a little but thats probably a personal preference. They do take a little work just like any cut-out cookies but this is something that anytime I ask someone in our family what I can bring for dessert they always say this! I use my kitchen aid but before that I would use my hand blender as long as I could and then mix the last part of the flour in by hand. Hope you enjoy. -- posted by 998171

Moist Pumpkin Spice Bread

This may be the most delicious pumpkin bread recipe I've ever baked. I came up with this for my brother's 18th birthday and it has been devoured in just two days. I believe the applesauce in the recipe is what makes it so ooey-gooey moist. It's also low in fat as the applesauce replaces the oil that would normally be used. The recipe makes two loaves, one of which can be frozen or given to a friend. -- posted by EntirelyEmily

Mandelbread

This is a delicious almond flavored biscotti-type cookie that is not overly sweet. It was my favorite as a child (grandma used to make them). God bless her--she made them by hand. I use a machine (a Cuisinart or a stand mixer) for mixing the rather stiff batter. If the dough is too sticky, lightly flour your hands to shape the loaves. Vary it the way you like, using chocolate chips instead of nuts. Enjoy with a cup of coffee! -- posted by Chef #364186

Eier Kringel (Raspberry-Filled Cookies)

These heart-shaped German cookies are so delicate and delicious. I got this recipe over 25 years ago and have been making them for holiday gifts every since. They also are a lovely treat on Valentine's Day. I usually make them with the liqueur, which makes them extra-special. The cookie dough does need to be refrigerated for several hours, which is not included in the preparation time, so plan accordingly. Because these cookies are quite fragile and no one wants a broken heart, package them in metal cookie tins lined with large paper doilies. Decorate the tops of the tins with familiar small candy hearts inscribed with romantic messages for a unique Valentine's Day gift. -- posted by JackieOhNo!

Chilli Choccy Eggs

I got the idea to add the chilli to the eggs from the Lindt chocolate block. Chocolate eggs filled with a creamy chocolate centre with a hint of chilli. This is a great flavour combination, the chilli is subtle but something quite different. I have also added Amarula Cream, Bailey's and Frangelico on other occasions, the possibilities are endless.
This can make as many eggs as you choose, it depends on the size of the moulds. -- posted by BeeJaye

Aunt Georgia's Gumdrop Cake

There are 15 other Gumdrop Cake recipes on Zaar as of today, but not this winner from my Aunt Georgia. She used to make this for my favorite uncle and his brother, my dad. This was BY FAR my dad's all time favorite cake! Not diet friendly, but really delicious and fun for a once-in-awhile treat. You can replace some ingredients with better choices and clean up the calories and fat quite a bit (but I don't!). This makes two loaves or one large bundt cake, or you can make mini loaves which are wonderful as gifts. Great for holiday time, a little spicy and lots of color. Enjoy! -- posted by Messy44

Best Rum Balls (America's Test Kitchen)

This recipe is from Christoper Kimball of Cook's Illustrated and America's Test Kitchen. It makes about five dozen rum balls that are intense, fudgy, chewy, complex, and balanced. Recipe can be halved or doubled. Plan ahead, since these are best when left to mellow for at least a few days in the refrigerator. They keep very well and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a couple of weeks or frozen for up to a few months. Cooking time is refrigeration time. Use vanilla for a non-alcoholic version (sometimes called moon balls). -- posted by blucoat

Cornmeal-Oatmeal Cranberry-Orange Loaf

My husband, being a true Texan, loves cornbread almost as much as he loves me. I was not a great cornbread baker, so I bought The Cornbread Gospels by Crescent Dragonwagon to learn how to make his tummy happy, and what a great book that turned out to be. Every form and fashion of cornbread you can imagine, and (almost) all good. This recipe is from that book, and has earned rave reviews everywhere I have taken it. It's beautiful, and the essences of orange and cranberry combined with the crunchiness of stone ground cornmeal sets it apart from other quick breads, and it will leaving you wanting more. I hope you like it as well as we do. -- posted by Feisty

Rachel's Special Chocolate Coconut Oat Bars

I was in the mood for all three and concocted this: it has the urban decadence of chocolate, the tropical staple of coconut, and the rustic comfort of classic oatmeal. These bars are special because those three things symbolize the various walks of life I have experienced. Open for all kinds of other toppings too! This calls for cream of coconut, crema de coco-- not to be confused with coconut milk or coconut syrup. Would make a wonderful gift or a party/potluck dessert!
Drunken Raisin Oatmeal Cookies

This is my co-worker's favorite version of oatmeal raisin cookies, everytime I make them, they are eaten almost as soon as I put the package out to share. This was inspired after I made carrot pudding for the second time ever, my DH's favorite holiday dessert, and his need for rum sauce to pair with it, the classic pairing of rum and raisins.
Milk Chocolate Truffles

This is a recipe I was taught in culinary school; the whole class had to make them for christmas and we sold them to the public- they were a hit! It was so much fun to make! We did plain truffles, vanilla truffles, and many other different flavors using different types of liquor! This is just a simple recipe- you can decorate your truffles any way you like, there is no right or wrong way- so you can be simple, or you ca be creative! So many possibility's- so little time! It does get messy, so don't be afraid to change your gloves to keep the truffles cleaner. I like to make these on a day where there isn't much else going on- you don't want to be interrupted, it is alot of fun decorating these- and eating them as well! -- posted by Xe_1501

Banana Apple Bread (From the Sweet Melissa Bakery)

This is an excellent, moist banana bread by itself but the addition of caramelized brown sugar apples make this truly outstanding. You can add nuts or currants. For longer storage, freeze well wrapped in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil for up to 3 weeks. Defrost (still wrapped) at room temperature.
Gateau Basque (French Custard or Jam Tart)

Another great recipe from Dorie Greenspan. It is a traditional dessert from the Pays Basque region of France with a double cookie-like crust and a custard or jam filling (use Recipe #405945). It's not overly sweet and can be enjoyed any time of day. It's very sturdy and therefore good for transporting.
You can use different fillings like blueberry jam, sweet cranberry relish, or even lemon curd. This simple dessert is best plain or with a little whipped cream or ice cream.
Doug requires at least 30 minutes to chill.
Storing: Wrapped well, the jam-filled cake will keep for a day or so at room temperature. You can also keep the cream-filled cake overnight, but it will need to be refrigerated. However, because refrigeration can dry cakes. It's best to serve the cream-filled cake the day it is made. -- posted by blucoat
