Country Chronicle August Cooler

Slushy and cool on a hot August afternoon, sitting with friends in the shade! Thanks to Gladys Taber for her inspiration in "Country Chronicle." The type of fruit juice will determine the "flavor"--try a mixture of pineapple & orange or berries & rhubarb juice. Your imagination is the only thing that limits you! -- posted by Debber

Avegolemono (Greek Lemon Chicken Soup)

If you prefer a stronger lemon flavor then increase the juice to 1/2 cup that will give you an extreme lemon flavor, use fresh lemon juice only --- you may use as much cooked rice and chicken as desired, if you have ever had this soup in a Greek restaurant or in Greece and enjoyed it, then you will *love* this! --- homemade chicken broth is always better to use but canned will do fine for this recipe --- see my recipe#118258 -- posted by KITTENCAL

Another Tahini Salad Dressing!

Nearly all my dressings use tahini! This is one that I've modified from "May All Be Fed" by John Robbins. It's fairly thin, but has a mild lemony taste which is great on a garden salad. Plus I've made it lower-fat. So enjoy!
Our Family Favourite Lemon Spring / Easter Cake

This is a delicious cake which is perfect for celebrating spring or Easter!.The base is an Algerian sponge cake known as 'Meskucho'. For an easter feel decorate with chocolate mini eggs, easter chicks etc. The cake is very easy to make & decorate so don't be put off by the long list of instructions & ingredients! This is my husbands favoruite kind of cake as it is light, fluffy & moist. You can eat it with just the icing on for a less heavy cake but the addition of the filling makes it a perfect dessert! -- posted by Um Safia

This can be lots of fun for kids and a fun way for them to learn science and math. Let them experiment by adding different herbs and spices to achieve all different kinds of results.
Lemon Mint Pasta

I got this out of a recent Martha Stewart Magazine. I made it and served it with green peas on the side. My kids loved this. It was also really fast and easy. Great weeknight summer pasta dish. The original recipe called for fettuccine, but I made it with angel hair instead because that's what I had on hand. The recipe also stated that you could substitiue fresh basil for the mint, but the mint was great. -- posted by L1lfish

Barley Water

From "To Set Before a Queen"--a cookbook written by a former cook for Princess Elizabeth's household (Queen Elizabeth before she was crowned, that is). It's an interesting cookbook, with some good recipes and some interesting anecdotes. She claims that the royal family were all "addicted" to this recipe. She also says that this is the recipe she was given to use at Clarence House. I've tried it and like it quite well myself. Posting here as it's an older cookbook and I don't want to lose the recipe. Since the rinds are used, it's best if you can find organic fruits without oils or waxes or chemicals on the rinds. Failing that, be sure to clean them very well--I soak them in vinegar water, then rinse them under very hot water. I can't recall the amount you get at the end, so I am estimating. Times don't include cooling time. -- posted by Halcyon Eve

Apple Mint Tea

I love tea. I love apples. This only makes sense for them to come together in this great tea. This makes enough to serve to others, but I usually end up saving it all for myself. You can drink it hot, just skip the step about the ice. I prefer this particular tea over ice though. I sometimes add a bit of honey as well. Note that you need 1/2 cup of mint leaves, plus 4 sprigs of mint for garnish. -- posted by Jess4Freedom

Jamie's Spiced Sugar and Christmas Popcorn Recipe

This Jamie Oliver sugar mix really does smell like Christmas (although you are not limited to eating it only at Christmas!). The sugar recipe makes loads, (but is easily halved) and it keeps in an airtight container for absolutely ages and can be used on a variety of things (to sweeten whipped cream, on porridge, on fruit--you name it...), so it's well worth doing a full batch.
I don't usually do sweet popcorn, but I like this one! -- posted by Noo

Sumac-Spiced Potato Wedges

A recipe I have adapted quite substantially to suit my taste preferences from one I found in the Australian Women's Weekly's 'cafe food'. The original recipe had chilli powder - which I never include, having zero tolerance of anything hot and spicy - but I've included it below as an optional ingredient as I'm aware that many people just love it. I've also added cumin, garlic, lemon zest and the option of adding salt and freshly ground black pepper. Don't include lemon zest if you don't like lemons or any of the optional ingredients if you don't like them! The original recipe suggested serving these wedges with tomato relish. When I've made them, we've enjoyed them with either deli tzatziki, KITTENCAL's Recipe #157176 or Ravenseyes’ Recipe #306901. The original recipe specified cooking these wedges in a very hot oven for 40 minutes; I've found that these wedges were done in a hot (NOT a very hot) oven after 40 minutes. Cooking times will vary, of course, depending on the size you cut your wedges. -- posted by bluemoon downunder

I received this recipe in a Bonnie Stern newsletter. I don't think I've ever been disappointed in any recipe of hers I've tried. I hope you will agree. The salad dressing in the photo is from recipe #346159.
Nirvana Lemonade - You'll Only Want This Lemonade 4eva!!!!

OMG! My friend in Germany took my to a Thai restaurant that had lemonade with ginger and basil. I thought to myself "What a wacky combination!" So I decided to try it. OMG! OMG! The ground moved, the clouds parted and I heard angel voices singing in 4 part harmony. It was that good.

This, is as close as I can come to replicate that glass of beverage perfection I found in Germany. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. (The only thing that could make this more perfect is vodka.) -- posted by BBCFan

Amaretto Sweet and Sour

I was craving an amaretto sour sooo bad but was unsure how exactly to make one and none of the recipes here on Zaar sounded quite right so I made up my own. You can adjust the sweet to sour ratio to your tastes by adding more lemon juice or more simple syrup. I know this isn't traditional but it's darn good. Serving size is approximate. I used a tall 'pepsi' glass per person but you could easily split into two smaller glasses. Enjoy. -- posted by Bekah49036

I am not entirely sure why this would be called a "Designer" sauce but it is very good. This lemon sauce comes from chef (& cookbook author) Hugh Carpenter.
Karen's Smooth French Milk Mussels

These mussels have the taste of anise from the tarragon, chervil and further complemented with Pernod Ricard. Yes! You can use Absinthe or any liquor that has an anise flavor like Ouzo or Sambuca. Milk in the title is not only because of the cream but when you add ice cold water to the Ricard ( a pastis) it turns to a milky color. This pastis my Husband fell in Love with when we visited Paris.
Made as an appetizer serving 6-10 people, be sure to have lots of crisp French bread to dip into the sauce. If you prefer to serve as a meal pour over cooked pasta with a nice side of salad. Serve with a pastis, Ricard of course!

Easy Lemon Self Saucing Pudding

Been looking for the lemon delicious recipe I cooked many years ago but somewhere along lost the clipping (before ZAAR time) and this seems to come close to it though called a pudding (maybe searching in the wrong area) but it was good though sweeter than I remember (would need to work on the sugar content), certainly don't remember having the sprinkle sugar on top as per this recipe but I believe that what gives it its crispy top in this recipe. Serving suggestion was 4 but I think could be easily stretched to 6 served with cream and or icecream. i found that 1 lemon gave me the rind and juiced that but needed to juice a second lemon to get the full 1/2 cup (got a little more than that and added the lot). -- posted by I'mPat
