Halo-Halo - Hawaiian Filipino Dessert

Refreshing, exotic, and fun! Great for a party. Don't let the eclectic mixture of ingredients scare you away. This is my husband's Filipino grandmother's recipe--she was of Ilocan descent and migrated to Hawaii, so her version reflects her cultural diversity. -- posted by Picholine

Mama Iuliucci's Potato Salad

This is my mom's famous potato salad. It was also my grandmom's recipe, but she used Miracle Whip and me and my mom use mayo. This is pretty much a classic potato salad recipe...great for picnics and potlucks. I know everyone has their own favorite, but I figured I would post this anyway...maybe it will become somebody's new favorite! -- posted by Karen=^..^=

Better Than Best Baked Beans!

I got this recipe from a PACE Salsa summer pocket cookbook a few years ago. It is a simple method to dress up canned baked beans. I have adjusted the ingredients/measurements for our personal tastes and I freepour everything, but had to provide measurements. Use the measurements as a guide only. For our annual Calgary Stampede block party, my neighbors always asked if I was going to bring my baked beans. They are quick, easy and without the hassle of making beans from scratch. The cumin and salsa gives them the kick and unique taste that have people coming back for more and requesting me to bring them to BBQs and parties. I also make a big batch to ensure leftovers and put in the freezer in ziploc bags (once cooled!) for a quick and easy side dish. If you go camping, the frozen baked beans in ziploc bags make excellent icepacks! Enjoy!
Edited to add: Don't let the large can of bean size scare you. The recipe as posted is for a large gathering such as a BBQ or picnic, however, this recipe is easily halved, quartered, doubled or even tripled! -- posted by Cathy17

Chili for a Big Bash

This is one of the dishes I made for a big crowd that will be partying with us on the Fourth of July. (You can cut the recipe in half or you can freeze for a latter day).I used venison but you can use lean beef. Venison is very lean. I use small cubed pieces of meat as well as ground. Gives it more texture. But its melt in your mouth cubes of meat. It really does melt in your mouth. All the different ingredients blend together to give you a nice spicy almost 5 alarm chili. I used Goya beans which are not to be rinsed. Check your cans most do need a rinse. The picture shown is one serving and topped with grated cheddard cheese, sour cream, and Salsa Verde recipe #84339. -- posted by ~Rita~

Danielle's Mexican Layer Dip

This dip is so easy to make and everyone loves it! At every potluck, if I don't bring it, my invitation is immediately revoked! A good friend made this one night for a 'girl's night' at her house. I adjusted the ingredients a bit, and the rest is history. I like to make this the night before so the flavors have a chance to develop. The dip is thick and will break your chips, so it's best spooned onto a plate to enjoy! -- posted by danielle washington

Charlie Haskins Coney Sauce No. 7

This sauce turned out so good that I dedicated it to my good friend and fellow Appalachian chef, Charlie Haskins. If you peruse my recipe page, you'll note that I have posted a number of coney sauces -- this one (in my humble opinion) rates right there at the top of anything that I've created in that line so far. It takes a while to prepare but it's quite simple to make and the end product is certainly worth the effort. FREQUENT stirring is imerative! Take this one as a covered dish (with dogs and buns) to a school event, to the family reunion, or, freeze some in zip-lock bags and take it camping. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. -- posted by Bone Man

IMPORTANT: Make sure that the bottom two layers are chilled long enough to become firm and that the top layer is cool before pouring in step 4 or the top layer will go under the cream cheese layer and not make the pretty layered dessert that you want. -- posted by poo235

Easy - Cheesecake Lemon Bars

Recipe was found on the side of a box of Pillsbury Moist Supreme Lemon Cake Mix. I debated about posting, as there are similar recipes already in the Zaar database that use powdered sugar instead of the canned frosting in the cheesecake layer. I prepared these as a quick, last minute offering for Hubby to take to a local function, and didn't get to taste myself.
Family's Favorite Hamburgers

I don't like burgers that have a ton of unidentifiable ingredients in them so I decided to keep this one simple. It works perfect for any condiment or topping. My favorite burger is the Rodeo Burger from Buzz Inn in Washington so I felt this would work well with those toppings. Sauteed onions, crispy bacon, barbeque sauce, and cheese. This kept everyone guessing about what was in them because they do keep very moist and at the end of the night as everyone was leaving, I couldn't even count how many people said "The hamburgers were great" as they said good night and thanked us for dinner. I work the meat for a while and sprinkle the salt over just a little at a time so it gets distributed and I know for sure that there isn't a huge salt pocket that will get stuck in one of the patties. Sorry, I don't actually know serving size because we didn't even use all the meat up and patties size will differ; freeze unused meat for later if it hasn't been thawed. -- posted by Christineyy!

Colorful Fruit Kabobs

This is basically fruit salad - on a stick! It's a great, healthy side for kids or elderly people who have trouble handling plates. It does take a bit of time to assemble, but the results look stunning at a baby shower, birthday party, or cookout!
The goal is to make the skewer colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue. You can, however, substitute any fruit you'd like. You can also reverse the order in which you put the fruit on the skewer, and dip the bottom of the strawberry in chocolate. Have fun! -- posted by Greeny4444

Red, White, and Blue Jello

Jello and yogurt are a classic combination, and I prefer this to the typical cool whip layer. I prefer to boil the water in the microwave - 2 cups take about 2 minutes. I also stick my jello in the freezer for 10-15 minutes so it sets faster between layers :). I use a plain tasting yogurt, so add 1/2 cup sugar, but you can leave it out if you are happy with the flavor of your yogurt. Cooking time is time to set in the freezer. -- posted by Japan bound

Vampire Deterrent

I got this recipe originally from my old next-door neighbor. I watched her make it one Friday in 3 minutes flat, and when she took the cover off her food processor the heavenly smell of garlic just wafted throughout the house and killed every vampire in the neighborhood. My neighbor calls this Moroccan Zchug, my friends call it That-Yummy-Garlic-Stuff and I just smile and pile it on barbecued meats, baked potatoes, whatever. I actually happen to like vampires -- my father was born in Transylvania -- so I hope none are offended by this recipe. Just a boring little note here: there are two kinds of people in this world, cilantro lovers and cilantro haters. I belong to the former, Sushiman to the latter. If you are like Sushiman, just sub parsley for the cilantro. Since I let him put a ring on my finger and pay for my electricity, I've been making it with parsley instead and it's just as good. -- posted by Mirj

Unknownchef86's July 4th Creamy Red, White & Blue Jello

What do you get when you combine two Zaar recipes...and give it a twist? It would look distinctively something like this. It didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted it, as I wanted only three distinctive layers and wound up with four, and the red and blue are lighter than I wanted, but it was really, really good...so I was willing to look past its faults. I'll still keep experimenting with it, but I thought it would be a good one to post for the 4th of July. Cooking time is chilling time (between layers and after assembly). Other flavors would work well with this, also...like a layer of orange and a layer of white. A few things worth noting: 1) For presentation purposes, try to find a plain vanilla ice-cream (without vanilla bean flecks) in it. 2) Allow 15-30 minutes for the first and second layers to set before you pour on the next layer or the layers will mix together and won't be separate. 3) Make the blue layer first if you want the layers to be red, white and blue from the top down. 4) The white layer has a very delicate, almost custard-like, flavor which goes well with the fruit flavors. If you want a more more pronounced flavor, add a little bit of vanilla (preferably white vanilla, so it doesn't change the color) or use Recipe #25883. 5) I found it far easier and quicker to open the side of the box of ice cream and slice it with a long knife than to dig it out with a scoop. 6) For darker colors in the red and blue, you could add a little paste food coloring to reach desired color. 7) I created this recipe due to some inspiration from two 'Zaar recipes: Recipe #25883 and Recipe #108778. Thank you to dojemi and faith58 for your inspiration. -- posted by UnknownChef86

I like a thin and spicy salsa for my tortilla chips, eggs, tacos and more. This is a very simple version of something you might find at a salsa bar in a Mexican restaurant.
Lemon Berry Tart

I have made this tart so many times, that I can make it in 15 minutes from start to finish, and that includes prep! It is so easy to make and the payoff is amazing. The lemon custard base elevates the berries without overwhelming them, the crust is uber easy, and it can be made the day before. Perfect Summer BBQ dessert! -- posted by Adam Hayek - Chef #1348906

These always go over well at my summer barbecues and Picnics. It's not the Normal presentation for crab salad but that's what people love about it -- posted by GingerlyJ
