Lavender Vanilla Bath Salts

Escape into tranquillity and pamper yourself and give to friends that need to unwind. Epsom salts will soothe tired muscles, while gently softening the water for a luxurious bath experience. Glycerin a skin moisturizer can be found at health food stores, some drug stores, or major department stores depending on where you live. Its also available on the Internet. I used Epsom, salt but feel free to use Sea and or Kosher Salt. I made this for my DD's Bridal shower as favors. I upped the recipe to 20 pound of salts. Placed yellow and blue (wedding colors) salts in 50 wine glasses topping with plasic wrap which you can't see and then topped with satin trimmed toule held on with thank you ribbon.
Optional: I also placed whole vanilla pods with some salt in a coffee grinder till fine. The aroma's are heavenly! -- posted by ~Rita~

Soothes Coughs, Colds,& Indigestion

You got the sniffles or upset belly, don't reach for a glass of orange juice or that fizzy stuff. That is good, but try pineapple juice instead. It has vitamin C like its orange cousin, but it also has bromelain. Studies have found it is effective in treating upper respiratory conditions and acute sinusitis. The next time you get a cold, make this recipe!contain little or no fat or cholesterol, and provide significant amounts of fiber, digestive enzymes, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. -- posted by ~Rita~

Insomnia Tea

These herbs are known for helping relax and make you sleepy. Drink this before bedtime and get a good nights sleep! The original recipe calls for 1 1/2 oz Vervain leaves, but Zaar won't let vervain go through so I have modified it. Please feel free to use the vervain, it is good for nervousness, will tone up the system, good for stomach troubles. Adapted from Herbal Teas. This may be put in a jar with directions and given as a gift too, perhaps with some bath crystals and a good book! You may also use valerian instead or with the vervain. Look in your health food stores for these teas. -- posted by Sharon123

Liver Detox

One of the first signs of liver disfunction is emotional difficulty related to anger: impatience, frustration, resentment, violence, belligerence, rudeness, edginess, arrogrance, stubbornness, aggression and an impulsive and explosive personality. Depression, mood swings as well as excessively emotional in general are liver-related. Tiredness, dark circles under eyes, poor digestion and dull skin are also symptoms of poor liver function.
This is a cough syrup you can make and take all you want. My mother made this for me as a child and I did the same for my two kids and grandchildren. It tastes good and is all natural. It does help the tickle.
Cool/Cold Bag for First Aid, Better Than Ice

Last weekend we were visiting friends in Germany and my Daughter and I got bitten by mosquitoes, and since we are both allergic to them we were full of swollen lumps. DD also took a tumble and sported an impressive bruise on her knee... but my friend Tatjana came to the rescue with this simple remedy. It's surprisingly soft and comfortably cold without the chilling lumpy frostiness if ice and it recycles cherry pips, so is also environmentally friendly. I tried to enter cherry pips in the ingredient list but that's not possible, but you will need between 1/2 lb and 1 lb (250-500g) of ONLY the pips of the cherries not the actual fruit, so when cherries are in season, start saving those pips instead of throwing them away! Can NOT be used as a heat pad, so please don't try microwaving it. Prep time assumes that you have a heap of cherry pips cleaned, dry and ready for assembling the bag. -- posted by kiwidutch

Creamy Smooth Body and Hand Cream

Chef #248023 inspired me to make this after I made her Recipe #256951.
Shea butter is known for its cosmetic properties as a moisturizer and emollient. As well as an anti-inflammatory agent. Shea butter can be effective at treating the following conditions: fading scars, eczema, burns, rashes, acne, severely dry skin, blemishes, dark spots, skin discolorations, chapped lips, stretchmarks, wrinkles and in lessening the irritation of psoriasis. Also provides natural UV sun protection but don't rely on it as a sunscreen because it filters out only little amounts of UV rays. Shea butter absorbs rapidly into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling. It can be bought on line.

Apple Cinnamon Crock Pot Potpourri

After reading many different crock pot potpourri recipes I came up with this one, and my house smells wonderful! :) If you don't have a small crock pot, just use a sauce pan and simmer on your stove. These are fun to throw together because you can use what ever you want to create the scent you want and you can't really mess up. I used the spices sold in the cellophane bag, they are very inexpensive and are usually in the Hispanic section of the grocery store. -- posted by punkyluv

Vinegar of the Four Thieves (Natural Insect Repellant)

The Vinegar of the Four Thieves is a super-strong insect repellent. It should be diluted with water to half strength if you spray it directly on your skin. This repellent can be used many ways. Splashed on your socks or shoes will discourage ticks, chiggers, and mites. An herbal cloth kept in your pocket and rubbed on your skin every hour or so would be very beneficial during outdoor work or recreation. Or, a nightly bath with a little herbal vinegar and oil will keep it on your skin for many hours and could prove helpful for families who live in the country or while out on camping trips. It should only be used externally. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Emu Oil is effective in its anti-inflammatory properties, and has been found to give a similar effect as prescriptions medication.
Fire Cider (Cold, Flu and Sore Muscles)

This is a recipe from my sister. She is studying natural (herbal) medicine. She uses this in the cold season. It does NOT need to be refrigerated, but does take 2 months to cure before you can use it. She mixed up a batch for me yesterday, but it won't be ready for 2 months. She recommends putting parchment paper over the mouth of the canning jar before putting the lid on, to prevent the metal from rusting due to the vinegar. If you can't find organic vinegar, get the kind with the "mother" in it. I use Bragg's.
Horseradish is antibacterial, and expectorant and a digestive aid. Garlic is antibact.and great for the immune system and colds and infections. Ginger eases nausea, colds and congestion. Cayenne is anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant, aids digestion and circulation. And onions have a zillion health benefits!
Simple Mosquito Bite Remedy

I learned this from one of my high school teachers. I remember she had told my mom about how missionaries will sometimes carry large amounts of baking soda with them on their trips for many different uses. This is one of them, and it works surprisingly well if you use it right.

NOTES: Works best on fresh mosquito bites and will sometimes make them disappear altogether. Will work on older ones by diminishing their size and itchiness. Do not use on open sores. Will help with other insect bites, but will sting badly on certain types such as ant bites. You can try it, but don't say I didn't warn you. You may also use salt (equal amount) in place of the baking soda, but I don't remember if it works as well, and it may sting more. The baking soda method might sting a little, but no worse then Benadryl sprays, etc. Be patient. It's best to just leave it on until you forget it's there and the bite goes away. Once it does, you may wash the baking soda off with water. Recipe can be easily doubled, quadrupled, etc. Just use equal amounts. -- posted by Ransomed by Fire

Onion Syrup Cough & Cold Remedy

While busy choking, gasping and wheezing with a bad cold, a friend asked, "Have you tried onion syrup?" I had never heard of it, so she sent me some internet links and lo and behold, "everyone" has heard of it but me!! Here is my simplified version. Cook time is "setting" time for the syrup, but you should be able to get a spoonful in about 2 hours if needed. -- posted by Glori-B

Mosquito Bite Relief

I don't remember which magazine I read this in (I was at the doctor's office) but we just tried it. The mosquitoes are swarming right now and my kids had tons of bites. They were in total desperation with the itching. I put a little on each bug bite, and they got relief almost instantly! Very easy. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Organic Garlic Fire Spray for Gardens

This is an organic solution that will take care of all the pesky creatures in your garden; insect or four legged. I found it on an organic gardening site recently, and it worked so well, I had to share it! Evaluate the pest situation after applying and adjust the water dilution as necessary. It will be pungent when first applied, but the smell will dissipate. Spray every few days until pests are gone. Respray after rain, and about every week to ten days thereafter. -- posted by Miss_Elaine

Homemade Lotion

You can jazz this recipe up several ways. Use an herbal tea instead of water (calendula is great for skin!), or an herb oil (like peppermint) instead of regular oil. Add optional oils AFTER the lotion has emulsified or it may not emulsify properly. Great oils to use would be almond, olive, grapeseed, or a mixture of any. Don't use vegetable oil. Tea tree oil and vitamin E oil will help keep the lotion from going bad. Keep this lotion in the fridge and warm it up in your hands before using. Great for baby massages (I massaged my wee one with almond oil and water lotion when he was younger), and also very nourishing for people who have to wash their hands a lot. -- posted by Llamatron

Natural Cough Syrup

I found this recipe for cough syrup posted by Bonnie K. McMillen, R.N, B.S.N., College Health Nurse, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. It certainly can't hurt and reviews seem to confirm it works. Ingredients are all common and most likely in the cupboard.
**This is not recommended for young children, as it is too strong in taste and honey is not safe for children under one year unless pasteurized or boiled for 5 minutes. -- posted by kellcinn
