Coconut-Almond Macaroons

Chewy, flavorful cookies for Passover that are not excessively sweet. They are dense and full of flavor. Try dipping them in chocolate for an extra decadent treat. I prefer them with date sugar, which is more nutritious than cane sugar. They are gluten-free and non-gebrokts. -- posted by What's Cooking?

Sandi’s Sandies

These delicious not-too-sweet (like me) cookies are made with browned butter and pistachios. So while the butter content may make you want to break out the treadmill, you can alleviate some of the guilt by telling yourself how healthy nuts are for you. In fact, the more nuts you put in, the less butter will fit into each cookie, so by the time you're done with all the psychology, you're eating DIET FOOD. ;) You can store these cookies airtight for up to 5 days. (I think stomachs qualify as "airtight".) Many thanks to the sharp eye of a member for noting my omission! The ingredients are now correct. -- posted by Sandi (From CA)

Ginger Cookies

Wrote this recipe down while watching Food Network while recovering from surgery. It was featured in the "Food Network Caters Your Hawaiian Wedding". This was one of Paula Deen's contributions. I love ginger cookies and can't wait until I can get in the kitchen and whip up a batch.
Sesame Seed Cookies

Though these are reminiscent of the traditional Greek or Italian cookies of the same name, the recipes originates in the US south and traces its roots to Africa. Nutty toasted sesame seeds are included in the dough as well as serving as the crispy coating. They are now commonly served at Kwanzaa celebrations. I have not tried this yet but am posting for ZWT 3. -- posted by justcallmetoni

Nut Horns

I have never posted a recipe I haven't tried before, but I was going through an envelope of old recipes -- clippings, cards, fading paper, you know the sort of things that collect in the back of drawers. I found this one on a water-spotted and yellow paper that's ready to crumble apart. I think it may have come from an aunt, but it may have been from a woman in the church I grew up in. I remember having them at Christmas. Since the paper is crumbling I figured I'd better post it to keep it safe. THE YIELD IS A GUESS. THE SIZES OF THE CANS WERE NOT SPECIFIED. I tried to come up with the standard, US can sizes. I'll edit both once I've made it and correct it. If anyone makes it before I do please tell me how many it made for you. -- posted by 3KillerBs

Oatmeal Barley Cookies (Wheat Free)

Delicious, chewy, relatively healthy oatmeal cookies that do not contain wheat flour. Chocolate chips, raisins, dried cranberries and butterscotch chips all make great add-ins, you can also add more than the amount specified in the recipe. These cookies travel very well in lunchboxes and backpacks.
The original recipe came from the Rocking P Ranch in Nanton, Alberta. I found it in a cookbook called The Cowboy Country Cookbook that my dad bought for me at the UFA in Falher, Alberta, not the place you would think to find a great recipe. -- posted by Lille

Sablés Normandes à La Cannelle

Sablés are sometimes called French butter cookies. The name 'Sablé' is French for "sand", which refers to the sandy texture of this delicate and crumbly shortbread-like cookie. The cookie originated in Normandy hence the 'normandes'. 'À la cannelle' means literally "has cinnamon". So these are Cinnamon Cookies, and they are delicious!

Notes:
Hard-boiled eggs-Contrary to popular belief eggs should never be boiled they should instead be "simmered" for 12-15 minutes depending on the size of the egg
Mixing-I highly suggest mixing using your hands, this will melt the butter and allow the mix to become dough
Buttered Baking Sheet: Yes, you need to use real butter NOT cooking spray
Rolling: I have gotten away with rolling individual balls and flattening them with a cup bottom but if you have time I suggest rolling them out

Party Chocolate Marshmallow Squares

I am astonished to be the first one submitting these with a boxed brownie mix which I normally never eat since they are nothing compared to the real thing as in my recipe #268933 but in this recipe they don't seem to detract at all so you can put this together easily. I cannot begin to count how many times I've made this. If there are ever any leftovers people fight over taking them home. This also freezes beautifully. Brownies vary by brand so just follow directions on the package ignoring my instructions since the site required that I put something in (oil, eggs, water) -- posted by scancan

Original Be-Ro Melting Moments-Afternoon Tea Biscuits or Cookies

These are great little "light as a feather" and meltingly crisp English style biscuits, or cookies. This recipe is the slightly adapted recipe from the Be-Ro Flour cookbook - they suggest lard, but I don't "do" lard! Melting Moments ALWAYS made an appearance on my grandmother and mum's afternoon tea table, and we also had them popped into our lunch boxes for school. The recipe is SO easy to rustle up and they stay crisp and fresh for up to 5 days in an airtight tin. You can roll them in coconut or oats, I prefer coconut - but I am sure they would be just as nice with oats, which is a suggested alternative. Children and "big children" love these, and they really are melting moments, great with a cuppa English tea! -- posted by French Tart

Nig-Nags

These are beautiful little coconut-y flapjack type biscuits. This recipe is originally from the 1981 Essex Women's Institute recipe book. I have very fond memories of my best friend and I making these in her kitchen when we were young, getting flour and grubby little fingerprints all over the page! Amazing. NB. These will spread like crazy in the oven, so don't worry if they turn out looking like crazy splodges of baked goodness, or squares. Leave a good bit of space between each 'walnut' to allow for spread. -- posted by Jaxies

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

These are crisp on the surface with a soft and gooey centre. These are great for the holiday season as the white powdered sugar contrasts dramatically with the deep brown chocolate crevices and they look as though they are covered in snow. The recipe is from "Bakewise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking" by Shirley Corriher. These are Shirley's favourite cookies! She is a food scientist (as well as a cook) thus her recipes are very reliable. The dough needs to be refrigerated for a few hours or overnight. Makes 3 to 5 dozen, depending on size. -- posted by blucoat

Helouwa Ta'aba are very traditional, lovely simple cookies from Algeria. They should be quite hard, but if you prefer them a little softer then take them out of the oven at 20 minutes.
These delicate little almond cookies, from "Gourmet" (April 2006), are really delicious.
Energy Bites (Mock Larabar)

Energy bars like Larabars are expensive ($1.75/bar) to buy. But you can easily make them using healthy ingredients. I made mine into small bites, vs. a bar. You can vary the ingredients using chopped dates, dried cherries or raisens or whatever dried fruit you have on hand. Yesterday at Costco I bought dried spiced apples and cranberries for under $3.
Yum Yum Yo Yo Biscuits

Adapted from a recipe I found on the Simply Great Meals website. Faced a dilemma in settling on a name for these. They are n-e-v-e-r called Yo Yo Biscuits, just Yo Yos... the Simply Great Meals website called them Yo Yo's, but the apostrophe makes no sense, and without the apostrophe the name looks like Yo YOS - which sounds silly and is NOT what they are known as! Conversions: 150g = just under 5oz; 60g = 2oz. Personally, I'd prefer to omit the food coloring. Not anti-pink, just prefer to avoid unnecessary chemicals. Seems to me that even a 1/2 teaspoon of cherry juice would achieve the pinkness if that's what you're after. The slivered almonds are not generally found in a traditional Yo Yo: I've added those. I'm of the belief that yummy nut never goes astray, be it in sweet or savoury dishes. -- posted by bluemoon downunder

I found this recipe from Home Cookin' With Dave's Mom (David Letterman), and it's a keeper.
So, it was Sunday and my sis and me really wanted to have a nice, comforting cookie to sweeten the day with. We wanted it fast and without having to go to the neighbours for a fancy ingredient. Well, this is the recipe we found. It completely fit the bill. Hope youll enjoy it, too! :) -- posted by Lalaloula

Peanut Butter Cookies

This recipe makes enough for a family reunion (I halved the recipe and still had 4 dozen cookies). I've posted the recipe as originally written. I really like the seasonings--cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. It makes a nice twist on a classic treat. Next time I'll skip the shortening and use real butter (just a personal preference). I'd also dip my fork in white sugar and press them in a criss cross pattern after they come out of the oven instead of before.
