Grandpa Higginbottom's Popcorn Balls

My family made these popcorn balls every year for Halloween.....as did my father's family and his father's family before them. A real family tradition! I don't give them out anymore but still make them every year for friends and family. Serving size is for one batch but two brown paper shopping bags full of popped corn will make approximately 150 popcorn balls. Younger children should be very careful because they can burn their hands when making these. Teenagers are much more suited for the job! Enjoy! -- posted by Nancy Higginbottom

Lazy Goblin Popcorn Balls

This recipe is much easier & quicker to make than the traditional version. The marshmallows not only give the popcorn balls a different flavour but make them chewy, too. I call them "goblin" popcorn balls because I did them up for the Trick or Treaters this year - wrapped them in green plastic wrap & tied with gold ribbon. -- posted by Debbb

Three Not so Blind Mice

The cutest, delicate mice you ever saw! Everyone remarks about them. I give trays of assorted cookies each year and place them on top. They just make it! It actually is a help when the kids can put on the almonds. I don't remember where I got the recipe, so I gave the best measurements I can recall. It sounds like it could be a Hershey's recipe!? For adults you can strain the cherries, then add rum or almond liquor and soak overnight drain and dry proceed with recipe. Save the rum for drinks. -- posted by ~Rita~

Popcorn Balls

My mother used to make these on Halloween for the trick-or-treaters (back when people didn't automatically throw out anything not factory-sealed) and the word would spread and kids would come to our house from all over to get them. She made some one year for a Christmas charity bazaar and they were such a hit, the next year they asked her to make a few more...and then more...until she was making 1,200 of them for a three-day bazaar, and they still sold out! -- posted by MaryMc

Dulces De Calabasas (Mexican Pumpkin Candy)

This is the stuff you get by the cash register at Mexican restaurants or in little Mexican grocery stores. It's been one of my favorites since I was, oh, 6 or 7 and got some at Olviera Street. I add the cinnamon and cloves because I like it spicy, but traditionally it's just pumpkin and sugar. Really labor-intensive, but so worth it! Do not use carving pumpkins, use sugar-pie or other cooking pumpkins (which the computer does not recognize.) Cook time is for unattended resting time. -- posted by ketchupqueen

The Clockmaker's Caramel Coated Popcorn (A Haunted Recipe)

In 1921, a German born clockmaker quit his well respected job to open a popcorn stand in Chicago’s Wicker Park District. The clockmaker’s typical fare was freshly popped popcorn drizzled with warm butter and sprinkled with salt; but his favorite, and most beloved popcorn, was his caramel coated popcorn. The recipe he used to make it was given to him from his only true love, who tragically died four years earlier during World War I. The tattered and torn recipe, which was scribbled on the inside of an old playbill, was carefully framed and sealed in an exquisite frame. The clockmaker faithfully took the framed recipe with him everywhere he went.

By the summer of 1924, the clockmaker’s caramel coated popcorn had captivated the entire city’s attention; everyone was frantically lining up at his busy stand to buy the sweet, sticky confection. A few months later, just as the clockmaker was preparing to close his stand for the day, a small fire ignited near the stove. The clockmaker instinctively ran out to call for help. When he returned, just seconds later, he remembered leaving the framed recipe hanging on the wall. The clockmaker quickly ran into the burning stand to retrieve the recipe, but he never made it out.

When the fire inspectors went into the charred ruins to investigate the accident, they found the clockmaker’s frame lying in a pile of smoking debris. The frame was in pristine condition; not a dent, nor a blemish, could be seen on it. However, the recipe was gone.

The recipe for the clockmaker’s caramel popcorn recently surfaced and is beginning to circulate around the globe. Unfortunately, many people think the recipe is haunted because it is believed that if your clock stops running after making the recipe it’s because the clockmaker has paid you a visit in hopes of reclaiming his long, lost recipe.

NOTE: This recipe, as written, results in a sticky, chewy caramel popcorn. If you prefer a crunchier caramel popcorn, bake it in the oven at 250 degrees for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. -- posted by Southern Polar Bear

Halloween ( or Any Other Holiday) Party Mix

I used to post on a message board that had a very active recipe forum. One of the members posted this recipe. I tweaked it to my families taste and package amounts that were available in our grocery store. It is the perfect blend of sweet and salty. You can add or subtract ingredients to your liking. For example, if I am making this for one of my kids class parties, I leave out the peanuts in case of allergies. I have changed it to a Christmas party mix by using the Holiday M&M's and substituting mini marshamallows for the Candy Corn. It makes a TON, but it disappears very quickly. I hope it becomes your family's tradition, like it has ours. -- posted by LizP

The Perfect Low-Sugar Kool-Aid Salt Water Taffy

I've worked at it and worked at it and 5 batches later, I think I've got it. It's the perfect salt water taffy flavored with kool-aid. It takes alot of work to get it to the right consistency so don't give up! And if it seems to hard when it cools down, as long as it's still pliable, it will work. If it cracks into pieces, you cooked it too long. Even 5 degrees can ruin the batch so keep an eye on it. Try again, or tell people you were going for painted glass candy all along.
Also, most taffy recipes will tell you that you don't need to keep stirring after the mixture starts boiling. I ruined 3 batches before I found out it's safer just to keep stirring. Even a little bit of burnt taffy in the mix ruins the batch, and if you don't stir, it will burn to the bottom of the pan.
**SIDE NOTE**
I sited strawberry kool-aid in my recipe, but you can use any kind as long as it's unsweetened. -- posted by InBlackAndLace

Cobweb Fudge

The walnuts can be omitted if preferred. Note this is formed in a ROUND pan. It makes one big web and is served by cutting into small wedges, rather than the usual squares. Use superfine sugar (not to be confused with confectioners' sugar), rather than granulated into order to avoid a grainy texture. If the melted chocolate begins to harden in the bag, microwave it in short bursts for a few seconds at a time. -- posted by Cecily Parsley

Red and Black Candy Apples

This is a fabulous Halloween creation that I fell in love with and had to keep safe (as in not losing the recipe!). It's from mattbites.com (http://mattbites.com/2009/10/13/adams-scary-apples/) and I unashamedly stole it word for word. You'll find some amazing photo's of these apples there too. All credit goes to Matt and Adam, and they deserve it in truckloads!

"*A Note About The Black Apples:* Lighter colored apples (Granny Smith, Golden Delicious) work well in making the red appear bright and glassy; darker apples like red delicious help the black candy appear as dark as possible. Muy spooky!

Also, Adam made one batch with red food coloring and after he had a few red apples he reheated the candy mixture and added black food coloring. Adding black to red will make it darker. He repeated the dipping process. Black food coloring can be found online or at specialty baking stores."
Do Not take the times I gave as gospel they are a complete guess. IMPORTANT:
You will also need "8-10 wooden twigs, twimmed" -- posted by Annacia
