Grape Wine

August Lueders and Sons owned and operated a vineyard and winery in Frohna, established in 1868. Although Martha, Concord, Seedling, and Niagara grapes were grown, their famous product was "Martha Wine" and they had a customer list not only in Missouri but in many other states as well. The grapes were processed and the wine aged in 360 gallon wooden barrels called "hogsheads" in the basement under the large general store owned by Mr. Lueders. When sold, the wine was bottled in 5 gallon , jugs or in smaller sized long, narrow, dark glass bottles. When the Volstead Act was passed in 1918 the government permitted Mr. Lueders to sell his remaining supply for Communion purposes only. Here is the original recipe for this famous wine. Recipe from August Laueders from the cookbook "Heritage of Cooking" A Collection of Recipes from East Perry County, Missouri. -- posted by Charlotte J

Diabetic Grape Nuts Bars

I made these for my Baci ("grandmother" in Polish) because she has to watch her blood sugar. Loving her with all my being makes me worry about her well-being. I decided to try this recipe (and another Oatmeal Bar recipe) and give her an alternative to eating baked goods for a "quick fix." She preferred the other recipe and recommends this recipe to those who like Grape Nuts. She says the bars reminded her of Grape Nuts pudding. -- posted by nomnom

Naples Grape Pie

Moroccan Charoset Balls

These charoset balls are part of the Moroccan Passover tradition and are scooped up with romain lettuce at the seder. I received this recipe as part of a women's seder. The recipe can originally be found in the "Jewish Cooking in America" cookbook. Cook time does not include refrigeration time. Yield should be 3 1/2 C (system won't allow me to enter that). I have been told that there is no such thing as a sweet red wine (excepting the Mogen David line) and to use a zinfandel as the closest substitute. -- posted by Ducky

Fresh Grape Salsa

This salsa is wonderful - sweet, sour, and a little spicy. We usually enjoy it with tortilla chips, but it can also be used as an accompaniment to fish or chicken dishes like other fruit-based salsas. It can be made with any color of seedless grapes, but red grapes are especially pretty with the green onions, chilies and cilantro. -- posted by KizmitRuby

I like this one not only because it is lower fat, but because it doesn't have as much added sugar, and it relies on the cereal more than the flour to make the batter. The muffins themselves are surprisingly moist and light in texture. I like the light sweetness of these and the crunchy muffin tops. (If you sprinkle a little extra cereal on top, they get an even better crunch, and improved appearance.) I found this recipe at www.mealsmatter.org. Watch these since the recipe stated they should bake in 20 minutes, but I found mine were done after about 15. -- posted by Vino Girl

Fruit and Lettuce Salad With Orange-Yogurt Dressing

This is my favorite way to dress up salad greens. You can add almost anything to the salad, but oranges and grapes are my favorites. The dressing is not overly sweet or tart-a nice balance.
This recipe is served at Wunsche Bros. Cafe in Old Town Spring and was printed in Texas Ties, a Junior League cookbook of North Harris County.
Curried Chicken Salad

Delicious main dish salad, perfect for a summer lunch or light supper. I typically use Madras (hot) curry powder, but used a mild blend in this dish as I felt it would benefit from a lighter flavor. Use your own preference and adjust the amount to suit your taste. I garnished with fresh cilantro to add some color, but also ended up really enjoying the flavor it added. The original recipe does not give any chill time, but I think it tastes more balanced after some time in the fridge. -Adapted from Gourmet -- posted by GaylaJ

Kool-Aid Jelly (Many Flavors) (For Jelly Queen)

A quick jelly recipe with many flavors, how about Watermelon Kiwi or Arctic Green Apple, Black Cherry, yum, to name a few. You can also make an ice cream topping or syrup. Some Kool Aid flavors will not gel as quickly as others, I don't know why, this is a recent discovery. Use recipe Liquid Cement #151544 to get it to gel if it is still syrupy. I personally think there is some new ingredient in some of the flavors.I use dry pectin and unflavored gelatin. I have never had a problem but I live in a dry cold climate, maybe that effects the gelling. -- posted by Montana Heart Song

Copycat Rankin Irish Fruit Soda Bread

This makes a small Fruit Soda Bread loaf that I based on proportions listed for the Rankin brand of Irish Fruit Soda Bread made by Irwin's Bakery in Ireland. I have no idea how close it actually is to the real thing but the size and taste are sufficiently identical that I've listed as a copycat receipe. It makes a loaf that's basically known in Ireland as a poor man's cake. It's so incredibly nice I actually like it best on it's own. It's dead easy to make and requires no rise time and next to no kneading. Has the advantage that it can completely finished within 3/4 hour, and even baked on a griddle if absolutely necessary- for example when camping or in a survival situation. Bakes a 400g Loaf. The recipe looks quite long because of the notes and historical background at the bottom, but the loaf is really quick and easy to make. -- posted by Ethan UK

Black and White Grape Salad

I love black grapes. There weren't available until Super Wal-mart moved in. Rural areas just don't get "fancy" ingredients like a black grape. We're kinda stuck with seeded grapes with very little variety. Anyway, in a search for recipes to use these beautiful little gems, I found this one, but there is one similar using green grapes here at Zaar. I find this one especially good.
Cranberry Grape Compote

I found this on my sheroes site, Martha Stewart. I made it for my first Thanksgiving on my own, and my family loved it. Since then it has been my responsibility to make this instead of cranberry sauce. You can use fresh or frozen(do not need to thaw) cranberries but I prefer fresh. -- posted by Diva-N-Training

2-Ingredient Punch (Mock Champagne Punch)

I've been making this punch for years. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone asks for the receipe and then thinks that I'm truly keeping it a secret because they cant believe it only has 2 ingredients. It is the easiest, most light and refreshing compliment to any shower, tea or party gathering. It's beautiful looking too and matches any theme or color. You can make it for a few people up to 100's and still, it is a money friendly punch because it has only 2 ingredients. But don't let the 'only 2' ingredients fool you. It's delicious! (Some people say it reminds them of champagne.) Kid friendly, teen friendly, adult friendly. Enjoy! -- posted by teastockton

Fresh Cranberry Relish (Substitute for Cranberry Sauce)

I've been making this for years, and is such a refreshing change from the standard canned cranberry sauce served on holiday tables. It comes together quickly with a food processor. Goes great with turkey or ham, and is especially good on turkey sandwiches! I'm guessing on the quantity this recipe serves, It's enough to make a large serving bowl, and fill 3 jars to give away too! Cooking time is just for boiling water. Hope you enjoy this beautiful addition to your Thanksgiving and Christmas buffet! (don't worry, the orange rind will not be tart, as there is substantial sugar!) -- posted by imatrad

Oatmeal Raisin Breakfast Cookies

This recipe has only four common ingredients, is easy to double or triple, and makes a good meal for those who are on a diet. Even better, it's vegan! In my opinion the cookies taste best right out of the oven, so don't hesitate to serve immediately. (;

The ingredient measurements are estimates, since I make this without measuring anything but the oats. If they aren't sweet enough, add your sweetener of choice. -- posted by Qzxyntop
