Orange Slush

Next summer when the weather gets too hot, I'm going to cool down with this! In the meantime I'm posting it here for safekeeping...I found it in the April May 2007 issue of Taste of Home magazine...UPDATE: I've since opted for a healthier approach to this recipe which includes the use of fat-free yogurt, 1% milk and removing the sugar entirely. -- posted by Cookin'withGas

Spinach Mango Smoothie

My kids and I have this for breakfast often. We call it our "green drink" and they get so excited when I make it! It's the only way they'll eat spinach. This is a silky smooth, very healthy, energizing drink! (You've got to be a little adventurous though; some people just can't get past the idea of a smoothie being green!) -- posted by a happy homemaker

2-Ingredient Punch (Mock Champagne Punch)

I've been making this punch for years. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone asks for the receipe and then thinks that I'm truly keeping it a secret because they cant believe it only has 2 ingredients. It is the easiest, most light and refreshing compliment to any shower, tea or party gathering. It's beautiful looking too and matches any theme or color. You can make it for a few people up to 100's and still, it is a money friendly punch because it has only 2 ingredients. But don't let the 'only 2' ingredients fool you. It's delicious! (Some people say it reminds them of champagne.) Kid friendly, teen friendly, adult friendly. Enjoy! -- posted by teastockton

Sommer's Slushy Strawberry Mandarin Brain Freeze

Just four ingredients! I had fresh strawberries that were getting soft, so I froze them. I had a leftover single-serving cup of mandarin oranges in juice, so I froze that too. I placed the frozen strawberries and frozen mandarin oranges plus their juice into the blender with a bit of cold water. This is a recipe I just created tonight. I was going to add some frozen (from fresh) blackberries, but my bf had expressed his desire to use them to make a blackberry shake, and there weren't enough blackberries for us both to share. Oh well! I just finished making this right before I completed my recipe submission and imo it's really good! It's very refreshing and tastes fresh too. I used about a tsp of honey and it's perfect. This reminds me of a Dole Frozen Whole Fruit Bar, except it's drinkable. There are also some nice pieces of strawberry left in it that make this really pretty and yummy. Be careful, this really will give you a brain freeze! Lol. :) This really doesn't need blackberries in it, I think it's great as-is, but the blackberries would add a different flavor, depending on what you are after. This one tastes predominantly strawberry with mandarin orange sneaking as a great background flavor. Edited to add: I bet you can make this a Brain Freeze with a Kick by adding an ounce of your favorite plain or flavored vodka or plain or flavored rum to this. :D ETA: A clarification on the mandarin oranges. In most stores in the canned fruit and applesauce aisle, there are a variety of fruit companies that sell packages of single-serving, individually sealed plastic cups of mixed or single fruits in light syrup or juice. I had one of these single-serving plastic cups of mandarin orange sections in light syrup or juice that I needed to use up. I froze the entire cup and contents. The cup the mandarin sections were in stood up well to freezing. When I created this recipe, I opened up the plastic cup and dumped the frozen contents (sections and syrup) into the blender along with the frozen strawberries. I note this b/c there was some confusion with another reviewer. I'm sorry for not being more clear. :) If you cannot find these single-serve cups, and you don't mind opening a can of mandarin sections in light syrup or juice and putting them into a freezer-proof container and freezing solid, that will work too. -- posted by blancpage

Traditional Bahraini Cardamom Coffee

This is an authentic recipe for the traditional style of coffee that is drunk in Bahrain. The key to a great cup of coffee is the ground coffee - if you can get Gulf Coffee then do so. Gulf Coffee is light / medium roasted beans which are then ground with cardamom & saffron. If you can't get Gulf Coffee then use a coffee which is as lightly roasted as possible & add a little extra cardamom & saffron to the coffee as you make it. -- posted by Um Safia

Ginger Ale

This is a homemade ginger ale you can make in just a few minutes. My wife found a recipe in a "Country Living" magazine. It called for using slices of ginger, but I found it too week. Much like store bought ginger ale. This kicks it up! I just found the recipe 4 days ago and have already made 3 batches. Friends love it and can't believe you can make homemade ginger ale. I have thought about making a ginger martini with this, but have not tried it yet. -- posted by Chef #880881

Razzy Smoothie

We created this amazing taste sensation by accident! We were going to make our "creamsicle" smoothie, but realized we didn't have any strawberries, frozen or fresh. So, we decided to try something different, and WOW was I surprised. I really didn't think it would taste this great with raspberries. I thought for sure it would need some sweetener like honey or agave nectar. But it really doesn't. You gotta try it! -- posted by RawFoodNut

Black Russian, Cola Black Russian and White Russian

I found these recipes in the April 2008 issue of the magazine 'Australian Good Taste'. Apparently, this coffee-flavoured cocktail was first mixed at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels in 1949. Cola Black Russian and White Russian with Vodka and Cream are obviously direct descendants of Black Russian! How much cola you use in Cola Black Russian and how much cream you use in White Russian with Vodka and Cream will obviously depend both on the size of your glass and the portions that best suit your taste preferences! There is an inconsistency in the spelling of "'Kahlúa" in this recipe because Zaar would not accept this spelling in the list of ingredients. Intriguing! Not to worry: just relax and enjoy your choice of Black Russian, Cola Black Russian or White Russian With Vodka and Cream. -- posted by bluemoon downunder

Strawberry-Banana Apple Cider

This is a yummy, warm drink, recipe you make in your crock pot. I found the recipe in "101 more things to do with a slow cooker."
You can use different flavors for the gelatin. I think the fruity flavors are the best: strawberry, raspberry, peach, cherry etc.
I don't recall having any problems with the gelatin dissolving, but if you are concerned you could microwave a couple of cups of juice to boiling and add the gelatin to the hot juice and then add the juce to the crockpot. -- posted by ChefJen #306542

Thick Tropical Smoothie With Bananas and Strawberries

Just had a root canal and having other toothache problems so it's difficult for me to chew solid food, including fruits. I recently had purchased a can of Safeway brand Tropical Fruit with Pineapple and Passion Fruit Juices. The ingredients read: pineapple, red papaya, yellow papaya, pineapple juice, water, sugar, passion fruit juice, banana puree, citric acid. I emptied the can with the juice into a freezer-safe container and froze overnight. I let the frozen fruit thaw in the fridge for a few hours and then ran the container under cool water for a about 30 seconds to break up the mass of frozen fruit from the edges of the container and then cut it up with a plastic pancake turner. I used a square-shaped container and broke the frozen fruit up into 4 large pieces so it would fit into the blender. Bf bought me fresh strawberries so chose to use those over the frozen ones I had. I always keep sliced, frozen bananas on hand in the freezer. The water in the recipe is necessary for the blending and it doesn't taste too watered down, and I needed just about 1/2 cup. The honey is for a little added sweetness. This makes two very large servings. This turned out thick, but drinkable. Please let me know how you like my recipe. It would make a great breakfast, snack, or even dessert! Prep time doesn't include freezing time for the fruit. -- posted by blancpage

They also wanted the extra fiber so we left in the pulp from the fresh fruits and vegetables. Additionally we left the skin on the fruit and veggies for optimal nutrition and fiber. The sugar could be further reduced or eliminated if so desired.... but a sorbet should be at least a little yummy, right? Tart, sweet and 100% healthy. -- posted by BlackCat 13 Chef

Delicious Fruit Smoothie!!

I've never had much luck making smoothies until I threw this one together. It is ridiculously good for you, amazingly delicious, and super easy to make! However, my favorite thing about it is that you can store some in the fridge and it stays smoothie consistency for at least 24 hours (maybe longer, I haven't tried yet)! For the frozen strawberries and bananas, I freeze my own from fresh. I imagine the frozen kind you get from the store would work well too. You could try substituting other fruits or juices, but I can only guarantee the results with this recipe! -- posted by ramartin42

Coconut Lime Smoothie

I was just wanting to try to make something new and this is what I threw together. You can't taste the spinach AT ALL. Tastes very limey - add coconut milk if you have it to balance it out if you want. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------What's great about this pairing is that the ascorbic acid, the vitamin C, in the limes helps the body absorb the iron found in the spinach. Without vitamin C mixed with the spinach, the human body only takes 20% of the available iron in the spinach! My husband has been making this one for years, in fact we served it at our wedding reception! As for the name- well, if you don't watch how much of this you drink, you'll understand the name the next morning. Don't use high end wine or brandy for this, any subtle flavors will be lost.
Quinoa Milk

This recipe is more creating a milk from quinoa. Quinoa, a "grain" from South America ('tis actually a seed), is a great source of Iron and calcium, as well as being a complete protein. This makes it a good choice for individuals who (for whatever reason) do not consume dairy products.

The recipe is based off of the one found here:
http://www.kimmykokonut.com/2008/05/22/teaching-and-cooking-in-peru-with-food-pictures/

Please note: this milk has a consistency of thin porridge before straining.
After straining, depending on the amount of water added, it should have a consistency of rice milk.

This milk has a nutty flavor. It tastes a bit like unsweetened soy milk. You can of course, add sweeteners and flavorings to your quinoa milk (I recommend almond extract) so you can probably get it to a taste that is very similar to commercially purchased rice or almond milk.

Good luck! -- posted by Chef #1354715

Berry Yoghurt Smoothie

I got this recipe from Sarah Owen's book "The Top 100 juices", published by Lifetime Distributers, Castle Hill, Australia.
Sarah Owen says "The super-nutrient vitamin C is needed for more than 300 diferent processes in the body, but it is easily wiped out by smoking, pollution and stress. Found in abundance in berries, vitamin C and other antioxidants help to quash the damaging free radicals that are associated with many illnesses."
The original recipe calls for natural bio yoghurt to be used, but any yoghurt will do.
This makes a large amount of smoothie, and if you're making it just for yourself, I'ld recommend halving it.
I hope you enjoy this healthy - but still tasty - smoothie :) -- posted by TALIA #3

Veggie Green Drink

I came up with this one night after a long drive from New York to Philadelphia. All I had eaten were french fries, so I was desperate to get some greens into me fast! This drink took care of the craving right away. The stevia helps to blunt the harsh taste of the veggies. If you want to make it a soup, use less water and perhaps add some spices instead of the stevia. Also, the yogurt can easily be omitted if you are vegan or have dairy issues; just use less water, -- posted by Jainene

A smoothie made with frozen fruit, coconut milk, and oat milk; I came up with this one based on ingredients that I had sitting around in my pantry and the need for a gluten- and dairy-free smoothie (use homemade oat milk, great recipe available on this site) -- posted by JTanen

Pomegranate-Lemon Warmer

Pomegranate juice is so healthy, yet rich enough that only a small amount is needed to make a soothing, tea-like beverage. The lemon adds extra health benefits, if fresh squeezed. I will add, since the pomegranate juice is not included in the nutrition facts, that this drink has about 43 calories. I hope you enjoy. :-) -- posted by White Rose Child
