Cocoa Cookie Hearts

I don't really care much for sugar cookies. I haven't really found a recipe I like. So, I decided I'd look for something similar, because I like the rolled out cookies. I found this in Hershey's 100th Anniversary cookbook. The recipe calls for them to be frosted. I used them for Christmas cookies and sprinkled colored sugar on them instead. I also rolled them out in a long piece of wax paper folded in half. No problem with sticking to surface or flour left over on dough that way. They're pretty good, especially if you'd prefer chocolate over sugar cookies. Cook time is for one batch. -- posted by Jamia Motsinger

A tart drink and very colorful. Add some to regular tea instead of lemon juice. You can make this overnight by placing a handful of blossoms into a pitcher of spring water.
Famous Fudge

I have not yet tried this, but it is from an overdue library book (From Our Mothers' Kitchens) and I want to return the book tomorrow, so need to get the recipes I want to try copied down, pronto. I would very much like to try this fudge, but I know I don't have the arm strength to pull it off. I may try it with my heavy-duty mixer; what's the worst that could happen? Anita Stewart, the author of the cookbook and the daughter of the recipe's originator, says you can use this recipe to make chocolate fudge: "Add 3 coarsely diced squares of semisweet chocolate to the final mixture to make a creamy chocolate variation." -- posted by Lennie

Body Butter Bars

The perfect massage bar for a special Valentine treat (or any time you need a little TLC)! These are rich and full of vitamin E. Cocoa butter and coconut oil can generally be found at nutrition stores; the decorative molds can be found at craft/hobby stores. And even though the chocolaty aroma of the cocoa butter is very strong, the peppermint, florals, and ylang-ylang give it a beautiful fragrance. Ylang-ylang may be hard to find, but by all means, try it - and remember, a little goes a looooonnnnng way! Also remember to store these in the refrigerator - coconut oil likes to melt easily, but it makes the bars silkier! -- posted by EdsGirlAngie

Cashew Truffles

Madeira is fortified white wine. Red petit four cups make a nice presentation for Christmas or Valentine’s Day. If you do not have paper petit four cups, you can put dipped truffles on waxed paper and refrigerate until chocolate hardens. Cooking time does not include refrigeration time. Note: This recipe uses pasteurized egg white product to avoid raw egg issues. I used “All Whites” 100% pasteurized egg whites. It is found in the dairy case at the market. Some egg white products have flavoring. Check the list of ingredients; there should be only one ingredient: 100% liquid egg whites. -- posted by ClareVH

Raspberry Swirl Cookies

Beautiful delicate sugar cookie with red swirls of raspberry/coconut/walnut filling. I've been making these since I was 11, and I can't count how many times I've been asked for the recipe. I usually toast the coconut and walnuts for the raspberry filling. I love to make these as gifts or for cookie exchanges around Christmas. I think these came from a magazine, maybe "Southern Living." -- posted by ShaGun

Lavender Vanilla Bath Salts

Escape into tranquillity and pamper yourself and give to friends that need to unwind. Epsom salts will soothe tired muscles, while gently softening the water for a luxurious bath experience. Glycerin a skin moisturizer can be found at health food stores, some drug stores, or major department stores depending on where you live. Its also available on the Internet. I used Epsom, salt but feel free to use Sea and or Kosher Salt. I made this for my DD's Bridal shower as favors. I upped the recipe to 20 pound of salts. Placed yellow and blue (wedding colors) salts in 50 wine glasses topping with plasic wrap which you can't see and then topped with satin trimmed toule held on with thank you ribbon.
Optional: I also placed whole vanilla pods with some salt in a coffee grinder till fine. The aroma's are heavenly! -- posted by ~Rita~

Heart-Shaped Cakes (Little House)

This recipe comes from "The Little House Cookbook" by Barbara M Walker, and the cakes were part of Laura and Mary's Christmas stockings in "Little House on the Prairie." -- posted by Sascha

Spiced Rum Balls

Something of a holiday favorite around our friends and family. In fact, we get pretty competitive about whose balls are the best...
The recipe is infinitely customizable. You can substitute vanilla wafers or graham crackers for the ginger snaps, walnuts for the pecans, and/or other liqueurs for the rum, and add spices or cocoa powder to the powdered sugar for extra fun. This is my favorite variant, though. My favorite rum to use in these is Gosling's Black Seal, though Pyrat is not bad. These are easy to make, but really sticky. The recipe makes 24-36, depending on how big your balls are. -- posted by Kaen

Save your boxes from Valentine's day and refill it with homemade chocolates. You can roll them in sprinkles, nuts or drizzle colored chocolate across them for decorations. You can vary the flavors by varying what type of frosting and chocolate you use. It is a good way to use up the last little bit of frosting in your can and they can be frozen. -- posted by Nyteglori

Victoria Sandwich - Classic English Sponge Cake for Tea Time

The Victoria Sandwich is the quintessential English cake, conjuring up images of old England and afternoon tea. It's always been a favourite in cake baking competitions and is even used by manufacturers to test new cookers. This is one of the recipes that I use when I make my Victoria Sandwich sponge cake - the other method is posted at the end of the recipe; the ingredients are the same but the weight ratio is slightly different. This method is the original and more traditional way of weighing your ingredients, bearing in mind that the recipe is Victorian! A true Victoria Sandwich would only contain jam, usually raspberry, but as the cake became more popular and cooks became more affluent, cream was added as a delicious addition. I was always taught that caster sugar was sprinkled on top - again, icing sugar is often used nowadays. This recipe adaptation was taken from the WI website, a wonderful organisation in Great Britain for woman of all ages, backgrounds, race or creed - remember The Calendar Girls? They were all WI members! Historical note: Anna, the Duchess of Bedford (1788-1861), one of Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting, is credited as the creator of tea time. She invited friends to join her for an additional afternoon meal at five o'clock in her rooms. The menu centred around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets, and, of course, tea.The practice of inviting friends to come for tea in the afternoon was quickly picked up by other social hostesses. Queen Victoria adopted the new craze for afternoon tea time. By 1855, the Queen and her ladies were in formal dress for the Victorian tea time parties. This simple cake was one of the queen's favourites and was named in honour of the Queen as a mark of the cake's most devoted followers! (I used home made lemon curd for the cake in my photos, a tangy change from raspberry jam!) -- posted by French Tart
