A Partridge in a Chocolate Truffle Tree!

This is such a wonderful way of serving your chocolate truffles at Christmas or New Year - or indeed any special winter festival! I do make my own truffles for this, but you can buy ready-made truffles for ease and speed of course! I love to see my family and friend's faces when I bring the coffee and "chocolates" out with this Truffle Tree! Allow yourself plenty of time to assemble this, the plant pot and the tree "trunk" can be prepared beforehand; once the chocolate truffle tree has been assembled, it will be fine for up to 2 days before you need to serve it, stored in a very cool and dry place - NOT a fridge however. I have made this with a well-known gold wrapped chocolate nut truffle before, as well as the white chocolate and coconut version by the same company! The truffles shown in my photos are local hand-made truffles, but any "firm" high chocolate truffle is fine. I have my own truffle recipe posted on zaar, Recipe #271012 which also works very well with this tree! Have fun - and just watch your guest's faces when you bring this out!! NB: You can also make this with marshmallows and other suitable sweets or candy, especially for children. -- posted by French Tart

A Symphony of French Chocolate Truffles

A Symphony or rather a selection of fresh cream chocolate truffles, this is my basic recipe with a few indulgent added extras.......such as toasted almonds, stem ginger with brandy or rum! These decadent rich truffles are perfect to finish of a dinner party with, especially if you serve them on a Truffle Tree - Recipe #270171 Do try to use very high quality minimum 70% solids chocolate, it really does make such a difference to the taste. They also freeze very well - which means you can make them in advance and at leisure; they only take about 1 hour to defrost at room temperature. -- posted by French Tart

Mint Surprise Cookies

This cookie is a Christmas tradition started by my grandmother. She used to always mail them along with her "Minnesota Bars" (#162331).
I have a note on the recipe card that it was originally a winner in Pillsbury's 1st Grand National by Miss Laura Rott of Naperville, Illinois. (One bite and you'll know why it won.)
The original recipe called for one package of Rockwood Chocolate Mint Wafers. I've never been able to find them in the store so I use Andes Mint Baking Pieces. I'm sure you could also melt regular chocolate chips and add a little mint flavoring as well.
I posted the "refrigerator cookie" method because I think it's easier. You can also chill dough for just two hours, then enclose chocolate in 1 tbsp. of dough. Bake according to directions.

COOKING TIME INCLUDES FOUR HOURS OF CHILLING. -- posted by Empire920

Pigs in Blankets-Bacon and Sausage Rolls for Christmas Trimmings

These quirkily named "Pigs in Blankets" are the traditional British accompaniment to the Christmas roast turkey dinner - we call them "Trimmings". You will often see pubs, restaurants and hotels advertising Christmas Dinner with ALL the trimmings - these will be part of those trimmings that they mention! We can eat these with NO roast turkey - they are what everyone grabs whilst no one else is looking in the Post Christmas Dinner kitchen! (I have known my husband to secrete a couple in his pocket when he was nearly caught!!) They are VERY easy to prepare and need very little oven time, either cook them before or add them to the oven for the last 25 to 30 minutes of the turkey or roast potato cooking time. These also make great appetisers, skewer them with a cocktail stick and serve them with cranberry or sweet chilli sauce as a dip. -- posted by French Tart

Auberge Cheddar Cheese and Ham Breakfast Buns - Muffins

These are what the French call "cakes" - they are little savoury buns or muffins - and are always requested for breakfasts in the Auberge. They are delicious split and spread with herb and garlic cheese when warm - or serve them alongside hot soups, stews, chilli or casseroles! I have also made these with grated Gruyere cheese as well as Emmenthal....the trick is to use a mature and strong tasting cheese. I have suggested using smoked ham in this recipe - it just gives a wonderful extra flavour to these delicious buns/muffins. They freeze well and are easily reheated, if you have any left! We often have these for Christmas morning breakfast or brunch with the optional chives added, and then spread with smoked salmon butter - divine! -- posted by French Tart

Earl Grey Tea Cookies

These are definitely fancy cookies- they'd be great for gifts or Christmas, but they're definitely nice for just at home with a cup of tea. Great for tea lovers! They're really pretty, grainy looking, slightly crunchy cookies with a wonderful taste! The flavour is very unique- almost vanilla-almondy, although neither are part of the recipe. The Earl Grey is just smashing.
Original Be-Ro Melting Moments-Afternoon Tea Biscuits or Cookies

These are great little "light as a feather" and meltingly crisp English style biscuits, or cookies. This recipe is the slightly adapted recipe from the Be-Ro Flour cookbook - they suggest lard, but I don't "do" lard! Melting Moments ALWAYS made an appearance on my grandmother and mum's afternoon tea table, and we also had them popped into our lunch boxes for school. The recipe is SO easy to rustle up and they stay crisp and fresh for up to 5 days in an airtight tin. You can roll them in coconut or oats, I prefer coconut - but I am sure they would be just as nice with oats, which is a suggested alternative. Children and "big children" love these, and they really are melting moments, great with a cuppa English tea! -- posted by French Tart

Sweet and Salty Cinnamon Nuts

This is one of my favorite recipes to make when I need to make a snack really quick. I have made these nuts a couple of times and packaged them for Christmas gifts. They also make a good snack on a cold evening. I often make a double batch and use both pecans and walnuts. Salt can be varied depending on how salty you would like them to be.
Sarmale are tradditional Romanian cabbage rolls that are always served at weddings and during Christmas, as well as other occasions or for no occasion at all. My Romanian friend, Carmen, gave me this family recipe that she altered slighty since becoming vegetarian.
Spiced Christmas Nuts

Making your own spiced and toasted nuts is absurdly easy, and they're great to eat. If you're not a huge fan of white chocolate, you can substitute milk or dark chocolate chips, or butterscotch for a different taste. The red and white make for a great Christmas dessert or gift. NOTE: The cream cheese topping means they won't keep for long, but they'll dissappear fast so it shouldn't be a problem :) Otherwise, you can freeze them. -- posted by Angel Amzz

Croatian Pepper Cookies (Paprenjaci)

History of these cookies goes back to Renaissance times. It is traditional Croatian Christmas cookie. We usually use wooden mould with various characters. You can buy these moulds in Croatia, but I do not think you can purchase anywhere else. These cookies are also a traditional souvenir and if you are flying Croatia airlines I am sure you will get one cookie – just one, it is airplane catering what do you expect (this is not a commercial!). -- posted by nitko

Traditional Buttery French Croissants for Lazy Bistro Breakfasts

I do not profess to make these all the time; living in France gives me access to wonderful croissants and other French breakfast pastries, However, these are even BETTER than MOST I can buy at the boulangerie, really! It is a time consuming process to make them, but the results are well worth the effort. The butter-enriched dough can be made the night before and stored in the fridge, and it can also be frozen. Once you have the hang of adding the butter to the dough and turning and rolling it to trap the air in between the layers, you are nearly there with the technique. This is my own recipe for croissants, and the quantity yields between 8 and 12 croissants, depending on how accurate you are with the measurements of the triangles before they are rolled. I usually start my dough off in my bread machine for the mixing, kneading and proving - it just gives me more time in the kitchen to get on with other things. I have also given the traditional method by hand, and the dough can also be mixed with a dough hook in a food mixer - choose whatever method is best for you! These croissants can also be frozen - before being baked; defrost overnight in the fridge before baking as normal. Eat these with freshly ground coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh butter and a selection of confitures, jams and conserves. -- posted by French Tart

This recipe was called "Triscuit Turkey Melts" by Rachael Ray but I prefer turkey brie cranberry bites as that really tells you what you are getting. This is an easy appetizer that would be great for the holidays, Thanksgiving, a dinner party at home or anytime you need a quick snack. Very cute and yummy! Watch the brie in the broiler.

This recipe is from "The Little Book of Christmas Cooking". It is full of these great little recipes designed for kids to do with adults, with easy step by step instructions. - Keep the cookies in an airtight container and eat them within a week. These little cookies look great when you draw different designs on them with regular and sparkly icing. I suggest using those prepackaged tubes of fine point icing for these cookies, but feel free to use any icing you want to. You will need to have something to pipe the cing on with. You will also need a 2 1/2 inch round cookie cutter for this. -- posted by Jess4Freedom

Magical Christmas Fairy Cakes - Christmas Fairy Cupcakes

Some recipe classics never go out of fashion and fairy cakes top the list
They are the stuff of childhood memories: just one nibble can transport you back in time and even today, no self-respecting children's birthday party would be without them. That said, why should the kids have all the fun? With just a little tweaking, fairy cakes can be turned into grown-up fare as well, perfect for a mid-morning coffee break, tea in the afternoon, packed lunch treats, OR for the Christmas tea table. The basic recipe is oh-so-simple so you can keep it plain or indulge yourself with extravagant toppings; for Christmas, I have used fondant icing snowflakes and edible sparkles/cake glitter. Some die-hard purists may omit the vanilla extract but I think fairy cakes are better with it added. Prep time includes the time it takes to decorate the fairy cakes. The edible cake sparkles and glitter is available from most good cake decorating or sugar craft shops. -- posted by French Tart

King Arthur Flour's Recipe for Shortbread

This was featured in an email today from the www.kingarthurflour.com website. Shortbread is a wonderful starting point for all kinds of sweet adventures: top it (nuts, chocolate, jam); flavor it (lemon, hazelnut, coconut); or do both (cappuccino with a mocha ganache drizzle, anyone?). Then again, if you're a "make mine vanilla, please" kind of guy or gal, leave it alone; it can stand on its own in perfect simplicity.

Our guarantee: This light-gold, crisp/flaky shortbread is buttery and mildly sweet. It will be about 1/4" thick.

Tips from our bakers
A scale is handy for dividing shortbread dough in equal halves. Each half of dough in the above recipe will weigh about 10 1/2 ounces.
If you're having trouble pressing the shortbread flat in the pan because it's sticking to your fingers, cover it with a piece of plastic wrap, and push on the wrap. Remove the wrap before baking.
DO cut the shortbread into wedges while it's still warm! Waiting till it's cool will result in crumbled, misshapen shortbread.
Although we usually use unsalted butter in our baking here at King Arthur, in this case salted is preferred. Why? Because, with no liquid in the recipe, it's impossible for added salt to disperse itself fully through the shortbread dough; you end up with unpleasantly gritty bits of salt in each bite. -- posted by senseicheryl

Zucchini, Potato and Herb Fritters

Adapted from a recipe in 'The Australian Women's Weekly's TAPAS antipasto mezze'. Be vigilant about squeezing all the liquid from the vegetables and, after thoroughly squeezing out the liquid, pat the vegetables (except the garlic which is likely to stick to the paper!) with paper kitchen towelling. This is a recipe where it's a good idea to have all your ingredients ready before grating the vegetables and grating the potatoes last so they have less time to turn brown! The weights indicated are approximate so the following approximate weight equivalents should give you an idea of the general amount required: 410g = 13oz; 375g = 120z; 75g = 21/2 oz. The number of fritters you get will depend on what size you make them; the number that the fritters will serve will, of course, depend on how many appetisers or other dishes you are serving as part of an antipasto mezze platter. -- posted by bluemoon downunder

Peppermint Bark

This is a copycat of the William Sonoma Bark that costs $22 a lb. I have never tried their version, but when my mom told me she liked it, I went on a search to find the recipe. Make sure to buy white chocolate chips that contain coco butter to get a smooth melt- otherwise, you will end up with clumpy chocolate. Use good quality chocolate chips (belgian, semi-sweet, or bittersweet) for the best results. This recipe is so simple and delicious my only hope is that I'm able to save a piece for my mom.
Easy Sausage Cups (Like Sausage Stars)

This is a variation of Sausage Stars/Sausage Cup recipes that use wanton wrappers and ranch dressing. My version uses Tostitos Scoops (bowl shaped corn chips) and cream cheese for some of the ranch dressing. I made these for Christmas Eve and Super Bowl Sunday, and they were a huge hit on both occasions! You can make the filling in advance and refrigerate until you are ready to assemble and bake. If I am taking these to a party, I fill the shells before I leave home and bake when I arrive at the party. They are also great with regular ranch dressing, but we prefer parmesan peppercorn flavor. -- posted by CindyMarie

Black Forest Chocolate Chip & Cherry Cookies

An excellent cookie for chocolate and cherry lovers alike. As you may know, the appellation 'Black Forest' does in fact refer to a forest of that name found in Germany, where the Black Forest Gateau was believed to have originated. Since then chefs have used their imagination to apply the combination of chocolate and tart cherries, customarily soaked in Kirschwasser (also credited to that region, where tart morello cherries grow) to a number of different desserts and delicacies. That being said, this delicious cookie is very adaptable to suit different tastes. It can be made without the chocolate (just add an extra 1/2 cup or so of cherries), extra chocolatey (add 2/3 cup unsw cocoa powder to the batter with the flour), kid friendly (soak the cherries in juice or a simply syrup), or easily halved. These cookies are very moist and chewy, which I love, but if you prefer crunchier cookies you may want to use a different batter base. This recipe is adapted from Dede Wilson's "Chocolate Chip Cookies". Cook time includes chill time. Cheers! -- posted by Oenophilly

Hungarian Honey Cakes (Mézeskalács)

Entered for safe-keeping for ZWT. By Erzsébet Madzsar Györgyné, via http://www.jcu.edu/language/hunghemu/mezes-szalon.html. Ideal for decorated Christmas cookies; these are served at festivals year-round. Let the artist inside you emerge! Note that the dough needs to rest at least 1 day at room temperature. The number of cookies depends on the size of the cookie cutter. Small shapes do not work well, as the shape will distort during baking. You can use margarine instead of butter and dried thyme if you don't have fresh! -- posted by Cadillacgirl

Cake Truffles

This recipe is from Bakerella, is super popular, and is very good. They are time consuming, especially if you make them for the first time, so plan for a couple days. This is a unique treat to give as a gift or to serve at a bridal shower, a holiday party, or any get together. Enjoy! Prep time does not include chilling time. -- posted by Greeny4444

Croque Monsieur Puffs

My latest crush is this new incarnation of gourgeres, or cheese puffs. These were inspired by the classic French ham-and-cheese sandwich, Croque Monsieur. If you're serving only one thing with cocktails before dinner, it would have to be these heavenly puffs. They're perfect for "popping" in between sips of a Pear Thyme Fizz or Peach 75. -- posted by College Girl
