Cheesy Breakfast Toast

This isn't breakfast exclusive, but it's very easy to make for those mornings before your coffee is done brewing. All the measurements are loose, because this is made on a single piece of toast, so you can eyeball how much you want/need. Also, you can put whatever seasonings you feel like on it. Sometimes I put crushed red pepper flakes on there. This is single serving, but I think you can manage to make more than one! Enjoy. -- posted by Kyene

Cream of Broccoli Soup

A quick, easy, cheap recipe I got from a friend (Laura Rich) who years ago tried to teach me how to cook. I am going to try it again soon, now that I'm one of the many unemployed and have the time to learn how to cook in earnest. I will be substituting the almond milk with soy milk. Let me know how it goes, if someone else tries cow's milk. Thanks!

Burcu's Turkish Cream

I got this super-simple recipe from a Turkish friend. It has a texture sort of like a very thick custard, and she uses it as a base for savory dishes (e.g. with addition of some cumin and shredded chicken, omitting vanilla), and as a base for desserts as prepared here. She suggested using strawberries with strawberry gel or a thick chocolate custard with chocolate chunks, but it's amenable to just about anything you can think of, including being eaten alone! -- posted by LightEra

Sweet caramelized flavor.

Pb&b Shake

I was in a bit of a pickle. I was getting bored of my usual breakfast so I wanted something new, yet good to taste and for my health. So, I came up with the brilliant idea of taking an old shake recipe and giving it a little pizazz! Although I only make it for breakfast, I guess it could be used for a nice snack or as a dessert drink. However you decide to indulge in it, I hope you enjoy this wonderful mix just as much as I do.

*NOTE* In the "Preparation Time" section, I put 1 Day, this is because of the freezing of the banana. -- posted by Nick R.

Easier-Than-You-Think Strawberry Shake (A.k.a. the Mistake)

Like the title states, this recipe is easier than you think. The original recipe called for a frozen banana but in the morning when I took the banana out of the freezer, it was no good.
1-2-3 Peanut Butter Cookies

Cheesy Cabbage Heads

My dad made these when I was a kid and now it is a staple at every family barbecue. My DH has turned it into his 'pet recipe' and I must say, it is DElicious! The times are approximate because we always cook it on the grill although it can be done in the oven and they vary depending on the size of cabbage you use. Also you may not need all of the butter and probably only half of the cheese, but we always make at least two heads. -- posted by 2SpiceItUp

Lemon Verbena Syllabub for Lazy Summer Days or Dinner Parties!

Just the job when it is hot and humid, a simple and elegant dessert to finish off a special summer dinner party outside and under the stars! This is also a wonderful accompaniment for fresh summer berries or gently poached fruits. Try to make sure that you give these little syllabubs plenty of time to chill and set before serving. Serve with a squirt of Chantilly cream and some fresh Lemon Verbena leaves as a garnish. Lemon Verbena is a very lemony herb, think of fizzy lemon sherbet (as in Barratt’s Sherbet Dipper) and you will have an idea of the taste! -- posted by French Tart

Rose Cottage Fragrant Old English Rose Liqueur Syrup

This is my mum's recipe for rose syrup - and the name of their cottage in England! Try to use old English shrub roses, as they are highly fragranced and impart a delicate flavour to the syrup. The correct word for this recipe would be a Shrub or a Ratafia, as it is fortified with brandy - however, Ratafia would also have fruit or almond kernels added; it would have been offered as a refreshing "pick-me-up" to gentile ladies - with water or lemonade added of course! This recipe is well over 100 years old and a bottle of this would make an unusual and delighttful gift. -- posted by French Tart

I adapted this recipe from a traditional "mayo" biscuit, and it is yummy!
Tea-Infused Rice

I found myself with a partial can of sweetened-condensed milk, and just couldn't let it go to waste.

Sadly, you have to use bagged tea or this just won't work. If you have your own tea bags/pouches, you can bag whatever loose leaf flavours you wish! Check out the "winning combinations" at the bottom, to see which variations I've tried and love.

Jerry’s Country Coffee for Hard Times

A recipe for our challenging economic times! This is “coffee” for when you cannot afford the real thing! Based on a recipe from Joan Ranson Shortney’s book, How to Live on Nothing. My book is from 1971 and is still mostly relevant even today, except where she says to eat margarine! For me, this book is like a second chance at finally listening to my grandparents and great grandparents. :) For other “country drinks”, you may substitute barley, oats, or soybeans, as these were used during the Civil War; the roasted shells of acorns were used during WWII by the Germans (caution: do not use acorns unless you boil them first to remove their tannic acid). I’m guessing on the quantity and will adjust accordingly after I’ve made this. If you try this, please let me know what quantity worked for you. This recipe requires a coffee grinder, or some other equipment or method for grinding the kernels. I wrote the instructions using a standard 12-cup drip coffee maker, but this can certainly be made using other coffee brewing methods. -- posted by mersaydees

Aayi's Jowar/Jolad Roti (Gluten Free Indian Flat Bread)

Gluten free but not corn free. This is an unleavened Indian flatbread which is made from Jowar, Sorghum here. The flour is gluten-free and so making these rotis (chapattis) is not as easy as making whole wheat rotis/chapattis. Despite not containing gluten, these are quite soft and have a somewhat nutty flavor. Traditionally, eaten for lunch or dinner with a dollop of unsalted home-made butter and garlic chutney, these rotis can be served with any vegetable curry.
Need a healthier alternative to regular ice cream that is easy to make? My family (including the meat and dairy lovers) loved this ice cream, and no one would have known that it didn't have milk or eggs!

You can top it however you want, and experiment with the ingredients (we've made blackberry ice cream, strawberry ice cream, healthy chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, healthy or "fake" butterfinger ice cream), etc.! You can make blizzards (aka Frosty or shake) by briefly blending it a bit in a blender.
Baked Peanut Butter Alpen Balls

I've been trying to find various snack recipes involving peanut butter for my egg-allergic daughter, and continuously came across no-bake cookie type ones. I've never been a fan of no-bake cookies, and trying to get a toddler to eat one without causing an unholy mess is a near impossibility. So, I've experimented, and came up with these. They're wholesome and good tasting, filling but not too sweet. Granted, a peanut butter cookie will beat this hands down in a taste test, but these are so much better for you. Additionally, the quantities of ingredients are variable, with the aim to get the consistency of a very stiff cookie dough. -- posted by KVasanth

Oven-Fried Fingerling Potatoes

I discovered fingerlings at a Farmer's Market a couple of years ago and found the best method that makes them fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The parboil method may not be necessary, but otherwise it won't be so fluffy on the inside. Duck or goose fat is ideal for this, but I have never tried it due to cholesterol. Make sure to rough the potatoes up well in the colander to get a maximum crispness on the outside.
I tend to eat them cold from the fridge the next day, but they can also be used as an appetizer with an Aioli dip or one of your choice.
They are seriously addicting in our family! -- posted by nsomniak6

Oatmeal Raisin Breakfast Cookies

No-Knead Ciabatta

This is one of my most favorite recipes. It has very few ingredients but turns out very well. When you take it out of the oven you can hear the crust crackling-very nice! Hope you like it as much as we do.
(If you want to use whole wheat you can add only a half a cup to this recipe -more than that will make the bread dense) Also if you only have active dry yeast- double the yeast amount to 1/2 tsp.
Note* since it is a no-knead recipe it is a pretty flat loaf with a max. height of about 5-7 inches. -- posted by Leah's Kitchen

Berry Yoghurt Smoothie

I got this recipe from Sarah Owen's book "The Top 100 juices", published by Lifetime Distributers, Castle Hill, Australia.
Sarah Owen says "The super-nutrient vitamin C is needed for more than 300 diferent processes in the body, but it is easily wiped out by smoking, pollution and stress. Found in abundance in berries, vitamin C and other antioxidants help to quash the damaging free radicals that are associated with many illnesses."
The original recipe calls for natural bio yoghurt to be used, but any yoghurt will do.

Apricot-Walnut Oatmeal

My husband and I eat this every morning M-F. The oatmeal is low sodium, low sugar, high fiber. The apricots are high Vit A (beta carotene), the walnuts are high Vit E. Without honey, it's quite bland. Honey, I feel, is a better choice than sugar because it is antiseptic and is thought to help with allergies, from which my DH does suffer. -- posted by DonitaK

Rib Eye Roast

“The” way to prepare a tasty (and expensive) ribeye roast -- from my mom's aunt. Works for her and works for me on the rare treat that we buy a ribeye roast. The roasts I use are usually 4-6 lbs, but here's an instance where size doesn't matter.

I love this recipe because I can prepare it with great ease and convenience, all the while making the best tasting roast ever. For a dinner party, I may start the roast at 2 pm, then with all my extra time put effort into other dishes -- like twice-baked potatoes, salad, and dessert. I have a double oven, so I can prepare my other sides without the forbidden opening of the oven door.

If you went to the great expense to buy a ribeye roast, make your roast this way. No butter -- no flour -- no garlic -- no basting. Just follow the simple instructions. I think it's best at medium-rare -- that's pink in the middle but warm. You may use a meat thermometer if you like, but I've never needed to when following the instructions.

If you have the "convection" setting on your oven, don't use it. Just use the conventional setting. If you must use the convection setting, you'll need to use a meat thermometer or adjust cooking times as convection will cook the meat faster. I learned the hard way -- conventional oven does a perfect job using the following instructions while convection will make it more medium-done. -- posted by AngieME

An Unusual Borscht

Vegan Applesauce Nachos

I know it sounds weird, but bear with me! The applesauce sweetens it, but a flavorful salsa, salty chips, and earthy beans help to balance it out.
Ming Tsai's Three-Vinegar Syrup

I'm a big fan of Ming Tsai and found this at ming.com. Sounds interesting! He says:

This vinegar reduction, which adds intriguing sweet-tart flavor to dishes, takes advantage of the fact that when balsamic vinegar is cooked down, its inherent sweetness is intensified. Three-Vinegar Syrup combines the complex flavors of balsamic, rice wine, and Chinese black vinegars. It does wonders for beef and seafood, but it can also be used to intensify the taste and aroma of sweet foods including fruit, or as a dessert sauce; I serve it over vanilla ice cream with great success. And because it is syrupy, you can use it decoratively, too, to beautify plates while adding a flavor accent. -- posted by firefly68
