Another addition to my holiday cook collection. A tender cream cheese cookie enveloping a fig and nut confit. Pass the milk. This recipe originally appear in the holiday issue of Sunset magazine. I have estimated the preparation time, which I would be to be a bit more intensive than a basic drop cookie. -- posted by justcallmetoni

Flaky Butter Crust

This easy recipe makes three single crusts. The dough can be frozen. It can be made in the mixer or the food processor (I make it in the food processor).

I found it in one of my cookbooks - CookWise by Shirley O. Corriher. and decided to give it a try since I needed three crusts for Thanksgiving pies. I was very impressed with how easy the dough was to work with, and how the crusts baked up. They were fairly flaky and buttery tasting, and held up well with both pumpkin and pecan pie fillings (without getting soggy). This is my go-to pie crust recipe from now on. -- posted by PanNan

Fig Fluden

A fluden, which comes from fladni or fladen, "flat cake" in German, is just that, a flat, double-or often multilayered flaky pastry filled with poppy seeds, apples and raisins, or cheese. It was originally common to southern Germany and Alsace-Lorraine, later spreading east to Hungary, Romania, and other Eastern European countries. Often flavored with honey, it was eaten in the fall at Rosh Hashanah or Sukkot and is symbolic, like strudel, of an abundant yield. Figs were often eaten in Germany as the new fruit on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. -- posted by Celticevergreen

Cardamom-Crumb Coffee Cake

This recipe is from the www.lifescript.com website. "Cardamom’s distinctive floral and spice aroma makes for a delicious and unique coffee cake. A member of the ginger family, it is widely used in the baking of Scandinavia and the dishes of Eastern India. If you prefer to go more traditional, cinnamon also works wonderfully in this cake." -- posted by senseicheryl

Weight Watchers Black Bean Brownies - Ww Points = 3

This recipe was featured in an email today from the www.weightwatchers.com website. It appears to be different from the others that are posted on Zaar. "Black beans add fiber and moisture to this lightened up version of a dessert classic. They're rich and delicious, full of chocolaty goodness." Customize this basic recipe with instant espresso, a teaspoon of cinnamon or 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Great served with whipped cream or powdered sugar, or topped with walnuts (could affect POINTS values). -- posted by senseicheryl

Best Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies

I started with the basic back of the chip bag recipe and have modified it until I ended up with this final recipe. The cookies will be slightly chewy, but crisp on the edges for dunking. This recipe makes about 10 dozen cookies. I put the dough in wax paper and freeze in 1 dozen size rolls. Just remove the paper, slice the cookies, and bake straight from the freezer. -- posted by asmilliken

Milk and Soy Protein Free (Mspi) Ice Cream

This recipe is a great substitute for regular ice cream and couldn't be easier to make. You can substitute any flavoring that suites your fancy. I've made chocolate from cocoa powder, strawberry, strawberry-banana, peach, and maple-walnut. The coconut flavor enhances the other flavors and isn't very noticable. There is more than enough sugar in the cream of coconut but a little honey might add a nice touch. -- posted by Chefro

Food Processor Chocolate Ice Cream

No ice-cream machine needed! I just made this tonight, it's really very simple with only stove top and food processor to make. The taste ranks right up there with dairy queen soft serve!! No need to go out and buy extra ingedients, this is made with just what you have in the house! Rich dark chocolate taste that any chocolate lover can appreciate. I can't wait to make this again with a few additions, chocolate chips, cookies, candy bars, the list is endless with this recipe.

Next time I make this, I will chop the freezing mixture up during freezing time. I had quite to time trying to chop it up to put in the processor. -- posted by cherrycola

The hardest thing about this is waiting for it to freeze, this also works using other fruit such a blueberries, peaches etc but the fruit must be frozen when added to the blender, thaw just slightly and enough to chop the whole berries, cooking time is freezer time, use sweetened berries for this --- this may also be done in a food process with good results -- posted by KITTENCAL

A delicious and simple snack or dessert that can be left raw or baked in the oven. It is also completely sugar-free. Select raisins that are moist. If the only raisins that you can find are dry and hard, try soaking them for a few hours. Note: It makes a really good granola if it ends up too crumbly.
Chocolate Sticky Date Pudding With Whiskey Butterscotch Sauce

Entered for safe-keeping. From “Super Food Ideas”, September 2008 (#1 Australian food magazine). Leftover cake and sauce can be saved for up to 3 days: store cake in airtight container at room temperature. Refrigerate sauce in an airtight container. Whiskey is an optional ingredient. I have tried to give U.S. equivalents of measurements. Double cream is the name in Britain for a very rich cream — containing 48% butterfat. Whipping cream in this country, by contrast, contains between 30% and 40% butterfat. Single cream in Britain is comparable to American half and half (and may also be called pouring cream), with between 10% and 12% fat. I am guessing that spreadable mascarpone will yield a similar rich creamy taste to finish off this dessert. -- posted by KateL

Energy Bites (Mock Larabar)

Energy bars like Larabars are expensive ($1.75/bar) to buy. But you can easily make them using healthy ingredients. I made mine into small bites, vs. a bar. You can vary the ingredients using chopped dates, dried cherries or raisens or whatever dried fruit you have on hand. Yesterday at Costco I bought dried spiced apples and cranberries for under $3. I also buy my dried blueberries at Costco. Enjoy! -- posted by Jan Marie

Gingered Blueberry Shortcake

I am always looking for ways to use blueberries when they're in season, and this one is a special summer treat! It's old-fashioned comfort food, with the candied ginger adding a sophisticated twist. My family was shocked at how good it was with so little sugar and fat (recipe from Cooking Light). NOTE: I have found candied ginger near the packaged nuts & dried fruits; just ask your grocer if you can't find it. I know they have it at Trader Joes and Whole Foods. -- posted by appleydapply

Scandinavian Style Almond Paste

This is a wonderful almond paste to use in recipes like scones, pizzelles, almond cookies, and other pastries but is optimal for those itty bitty Danish almond cakes.
I got this from a cooking magazine a few years ago. My version calls for 2 tbsp butter but you might want to up it to 3 if you find that it's not a good consistency or almond-to-butter ratio. If you don't have almond extract at hand (because you're like me and are too poor and/or lazy to buy a bottle), vanilla extract will work too. Also you need a food processor for this! -- posted by the80srule

Berry Yoghurt Smoothie

I got this recipe from Sarah Owen's book "The Top 100 juices", published by Lifetime Distributers, Castle Hill, Australia.
Sarah Owen says "The super-nutrient vitamin C is needed for more than 300 diferent processes in the body, but it is easily wiped out by smoking, pollution and stress. Found in abundance in berries, vitamin C and other antioxidants help to quash the damaging free radicals that are associated with many illnesses."
The original recipe calls for natural bio yoghurt to be used, but any yoghurt will do.
This makes a large amount of smoothie, and if you're making it just for yourself, I'ld recommend halving it.
I hope you enjoy this healthy - but still tasty - smoothie :) -- posted by TALIA #3
