This traditional molasses-rich dessert isn't as popular as it used to be, but it remains a very tasty treat.  Despite the title, early New England settlers did not adapt this recipe from native Americans: 'Indian' refers to the 'Indian meal' used - cornmeal, as wheat flour wasn't available. We were at a cottage with friends of my brothers, in four days we managed to scarf down at least five of these cakes with only five people! It is moist and very tasty.  We barely waited for the cake to cool down, and didn't even bother with frosting. I imagine if you want to frost the cake, it would be even better. Sarah Owen says &amp;quot;The super-nutrient vitamin C is needed for more than 300 diferent processes in the body, but it is easily wiped out by smoking, pollution and stress. Found in abundance in berries, vitamin C and other antioxidants help to quash the damaging free radicals that are associated with many illnesses.&amp;quot;
The original recipe calls for natural bio yoghurt to be used, but any yoghurt will do.
This makes a large amount of smoothie, and if you're making it just for yourself, I'ld recommend halving it.

I found the basic recipe in the TOH 's 2001 Annual recipes, it was sent in to them by Anne Boesiger of Meridian, Idaho. Since I like a thicker and more intense chocolate  flavor, the amounts of cornstarch and chocolate were changed.The database wouldn't let me add just a pinch of salt, so I had to put 1/8 teaspoon. Also, the way that the ingredients were added was changed too. Chill time is included in cook time. The longer you let this chill, the more intense the chocolate flavor will be. 			<description>Been looking for the lemon delicious recipe I cooked many years ago but somewhere along lost the clipping (before ZAAR time) and this seems to come close to it though called a pudding (maybe searching in the wrong area) but it was good though sweeter than I remember (would need to work on the sugar content), certainly don't remember having the sprinkle sugar on top as per this recipe but I believe that what gives it its crispy top in this recipe. Mom always made this in her beautiful copper au gratin pan.  I bought the same pan when I got married, just so I could make this dessert.  Originally from the 1966 version of the &amp;quot;Woman's Day Encyclopedia of Cookery&amp;quot;, Mom adapted it slightly over the years (with a little help from Cooks Illustrated I think).  Cutting the apples into &amp;quot;cubes&amp;quot; (instead of slices)  helps the apples keep the apples firm throughout. I have made this with pecans or walnuts.  I have also made it without nuts.  I like it best with pecans, but all versions are yummy!!  I love it warm or cold.
