The baby carrot is for the nose.
The black olive for the eyes.
The pretzel for the mouth.
The radish for the cheeks.
The round crackers for the eyes,
The big red pepper for the hat.
The small red peppers for the bottom part below the beard. -- posted by littlemafia

Cross Stitch Cookies

There's something about these cookies....no matter if you prefer soft cookies or crisp cookies, rich cookies or bland cookies....you'll keep coming back to these goodies! I was definitely surprised to see that these were not already posted on Zaar, but excited to add a piece of my family history to the pot! A constant in Grandma's cookie jar, these cookies get crunchy after sitting for a few days, but that just adds to the allure. A nice soft in the middle, crunchy on the outside, cinnamon flavored treat- perfect for your holiday trays- everyone will like them! Plus- these ingredients are so readily available that you can literally make fresh cookies in less than 45 minutes! -- posted by Houseblend

Twice-Baked Potatoes

These twice-baked potatoes, stuffed with cheddar cheese and bacon, are just the way my mother used to make them. I always loved the addition of the green onions. When you are feeling indulgent (these potatoes may not be for the weight conscious!) and are in the mood for a good steak and potatoes, try these! They are also good served alongside prime rib, chicken, or pork (even good all by themselves). Double or triple the recipe for your dinner parties. And, they can even be prepared upto 2 days ahead...just cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to do the final bake. -- posted by Alan in SW Florida

Chestnut Stuffing With Pancetta and Fennel

I love chestnuts! This is difficult because I don't love preparing them & I really dislike getting chestnuts that turn out to be moldy. They are spendy so they fall into the "very special occasions" category. Oh so good. I jumped on this recipe when I read it in The Seattle Times.
Coconut-Orange Thumb Print Cookies

Adding this to my holiday cookie trays. Adapted from a recipe in The Seattle Times provided by Lynne Rossetto Kasper. Something wonderful about orange at Christmas. Coconut is always so festive too. The article noted this dough really benefits from resting overnight in the refrigerator so start the day before. Over working this dough seems to make tough cookies - think I'll be using cake flour.
Bill Yosse's White House Apple Pie

Came across this in The Seattle Times. Pie without an exquisite crust is simply not the real thing. They said, "White House pastry chef Bill Yosses' light, flaky pie crusts have earned him the nickname "The Crustmaster" from President Barack Obama." This recipe is adapted from Bill Yosses, White House Pastry chef - hope this version is as good as the one being served in the White House. Note it makes use of lard, the secret of all great pastry. Just in time for prime pie making!
The Mama's Thanksgiving Maple Sweet Potatoes and Apples

This recipe is DEMANDED when we have family dinners at my Mama's house. It's delicious! My sister and I actually got into an arguement over who got the leftovers. They're sweet but they do not have the goopy marshmallow junk on them. They're the only ones that I eat. It was created by my Mama (Sheryl) so all credit goes to her on this one. I usually double this recipe when I make it to feed a family of 4. -- posted by flipside1794

I haven't tried this recipe yet but I couldn't pass up posting it because I don't want to lose it and others might enjoy a "legal" cookie recipe. I'm totally guessing at the yield. Zaar is listing the calorie and fat content (mostly fron the nuts) for a dozen cookines. Dividing 12 into that amount breaks down to each cookie having 33.5 calories. If you wish to lower it more just use less nuts. -- posted by Annacia

Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies

I originally found this recipe on a baking blog, Cookie Baker Lynn. I made one major change to the recipe; melting the chocolate and incorporating it into the batter instead of using them as chunks in the cookie. I searched here and found two recipes for these cookies each giving credit to Martha Stewart's website. Both used chunks of chocolate rather than incorporating in the batter. I think this is a significant enough change to warrant another recipe and to claim my own spin ;) These cookies are thin chewy chocolatey goodness in every bite. Prep time includes chill time. -- posted by invictus

White Chocolate Layer Cake With Cranberry Filling

Talk about a winter holiday special! WOW. Four layers of snow drift white cake with the deep scarlet of a cranberry filling. Wait until you see it cut through it's creamy white frosting and are serving this gorgeous red and white striped cake. AND IT HAS CHOCOLATE *swoon*. What a perfect cake to serve at any special celebration. Christmas, a wedding, Valentines, and anniversary?. Times given do not include cooling time. -- posted by Annacia

Whipped Sweet Potatoes and Bananas With Honey

From Tyler Florence, Ultimate Thanksgiving. I like the idea of using banana and honey instead of sugar for the sweetness. I can't stand those yucky, overly sweet sweet potatoes that we here in the south usually serve. This is a better option for those of us who enjoy sweet potatoes without all the sugar. I did retain the pecan topping but you can probably cut it back to 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Enjoy! -- posted by ThreeGoodCooks

Holiday Nut Roll (Americanized Croatian Nut Roll)

While similar to other nut roll recipes, this filling is unique because it uses no egg whites or lemon and includes a delicious "Americanization" of the Slavic recipe by adding--whiskey! It adds a fantastic additional flavor; feel free to split the filling before adding whiskey if you'd like to reserve some spirit-free for the kids (though it cooks off and I've never met a kid who didn't like this).

Makes a big batch--perfect for giving away. Freezes very well. My sister and I will make double this batch all at once and freeze them until we're ready to give/send them out. -- posted by Tlharin
