Mom's Fruitcake Rocks

This was the recipe Mother used for years. She really didn't use recipes, but I did find this in some old cookbooks after she passed away. She didn't write down oven temp or cook time so that is my estimate. Cook time is per cookie sheet. She also didn't write down yield, but it makes a large batch, so yield is an estimate also. Cook these around Thanksgiving, place in cookie tin with wax paper between layers and freeze. Take out just before Christmas and they are wonderful. -- posted by Jellyqueen

Cherry Chocolate Cake

A wonderful cherry chocolate cake my mother made for every single birthday I had growing up. Now I make it for myself at least once a year! The frosting is unusual, not as sweet as most, and the chilled taste is out of this world!!!
Chocolate Cherry Kid Friendly Rum Balls

My family has been making these rum balls for as long as I can remember. We use light cream cheese (which MUST be block style as it is firmer than tub style) to make them lower in fat, and rum extract as that is what we prefer.
Soft-Fruit Fool

The soft-fruit culinary sibling of the Fresh Fruit Fool. There is no foolishness about these two desserts! Traditional English fruit fools derive their name from the French word 'fouler', meaning to crush. Fortunately, this word was modified to 'fool': after all, not too many of us would be keen to be making, serving or eating 'foul' fruits! This recipe is one I have adapted from the Australian publication by Reader's Digest of a book jam-packed with traditional Australian recipes: 'Family Recipe Scrapbook: tried and trusted recipes for today's cooks'. I bought the book in preparation for the 2005 Zaar World Tour, so I could track down familiar recipes I've eaten often or heard of but not previously eaten. What I love about the recipes in this book is that from whatever decade or century past they come, they have been updated to suit C21st tastes. This is a prepare-ahead recipe, and the preparation and cooking times below do not include macerating and cooling times. BTW, 500g Australian = 455g Canadian = 1 pound American. -- posted by bluemoon downunder

Cherry-Tarragon Chicken Salad

I am a huge fan of chicken salad, as you can see by the large number of chicken salad recipe I have already shared. This version came from Southern Living and uses some of my favorite ingredients, tarragon and dried cherries. I think dried blueberries or cranberries could easily be substituted in this, but the fresh tarragon is a must. Dried tarrgon just will not taste the same. I prefer to use cooked breast meat in my chicken salads, but I will leave that up to you. -- posted by HeatherFeather

Blue Lagoon

There is a really funny story behind this one, we were in fiji a while ago and i was only just 11. my brother being a lot older than me had a traffic light, my mum asked the waiter if i could have a non-alcoholic traffic light and he nodded his head and agreed.(mum has a stong kiwi accent and is hard to understand). so my drink comes and i love it so much that i literally down it, i slept very well that night, we asked for the recipe and when we got it my parents were in complete shock to see how much alcohol was actually in it!!!
Coral Cooler

This pretty drink is also refreshing. I use Fresca soda and it is one of my favorite sodas. I was thrilled when I found this because even though I like drinking it from the bottle, this is a special treat for me with two of my other favorite fruits. I usually have to use two jars of cherries to get the 1/2 cup of cherry juice.
Black Forest Gateau ( Cake )

This traditional German recipe is nothing like the commercial cakes on sale these days - the ones that are cloyingly sweet with that "slick" icing.
Cherry Sorbet

Created by accident, it is one of the most requested deserts that I make. A mixture of Rainer and Bing cherries seem to give it an extra special something. Use a non-oak white wine for this recipe. Also, if you are ever in Northern California, near the town of Placerville, stop by Latcham Vineyards and pick up a bottle of their Muscat Canelli & Gold Rush White wines. They are the original wines used in this recipe and easily the tastiest I've used to make it. If you're not into wine, substitute the amount for your choice of pure fruit juice. -- posted by blueyedwineaux

Times do not include chill time. -- posted by Ducky

Cherry Ice

This simple ice makes the most of summers ripe cherries. For great color, use Black Cherries. The 4 hrs cook time is freezing time without an ice cream maker. Don't expect a hard freeze for this ice, it will remain in a semi-hard frozen state. It's delicious as it is :D -- posted by Annacia

The Raffles Hotel Original Singapore Gin Sling Cocktail

The Singapore Sling is one of those wonderful drinks that we probably have all heard of, but perhaps have never had. And because this recipe is often incorrectly recorded in most recipe books, even if you've think you've had it, you probably haven't.

One of the key, and often overlooked ingredients in this drink is Benedictine. While the resulting flavour is not overly predominate, it does add a certain taste profile that would be totally missing without this secret ingredient.

None dispute that the Singapore Sling was originally created by Mr. Ngiam Tong Boon for the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. However that is where the agreements end. The exact date is in question, with some people claiming it was in 1915, some 1913, while the hotel itself claims that it was created sometime prior to 1910. There is also plenty of disagreement as to how closely the current version of this drink that is served at Raffles is to what was originally served. Apparently the original recipe was lost and forgotten sometime in the 1930's, and the drink that they currently serve at the hotel's Long Bar (see recipe below) is based on memories of former bartenders, and some written notes that they were able to discover. Whatever the truth may be, this "iconic" drink is still enjoyed today, as much as it was back in the early 20th century! Maybe, the only way to really appreciate this cocktail, is to sip it slowly whilst sitting in a rattan chair, under the ceiling fans in the Long Bar at Raffles Hotel! -- posted by French Tart

Original Be-Ro Melting Moments-Afternoon Tea Biscuits or Cookies

These are great little "light as a feather" and meltingly crisp English style biscuits, or cookies. This recipe is the slightly adapted recipe from the Be-Ro Flour cookbook - they suggest lard, but I don't "do" lard! Melting Moments ALWAYS made an appearance on my grandmother and mum's afternoon tea table, and we also had them popped into our lunch boxes for school. The recipe is SO easy to rustle up and they stay crisp and fresh for up to 5 days in an airtight tin. You can roll them in coconut or oats, I prefer coconut - but I am sure they would be just as nice with oats, which is a suggested alternative. Children and "big children" love these, and they really are melting moments, great with a cuppa English tea! -- posted by French Tart

Cherry Almond Nanaimo Bars

Prohibition Party Punch

This recipe is from an old cookbook I found. Homemade wine or beer was legal as long as it contained no more than one-half per cent alcohol. From Every Woman's Cook Book by Mrs. Chas. F. Moritz (1926) p. 617. If you can find a bootlegger in your area, I think some rum or whiskey would really perk this up. This recipe makes a LOT!
Festive Sugar Plums - Old Fashioned Sweetmeats

I love the Nutcracker Ballet and the music that accompanies it, especially the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies! These fabulous little festive sweetmeats are based on a recipe that I adapted from Delia Smith's latest and BRILLIANT cookbook, "Happy Christmas". I have made these TWICE already - as a pre-Christmas dummy run, and they are SO easy as well as being extremely delicious! Sugar plums are mentioned in all forms of literature; most famously in “The Night Before Christmas”…………“The children were nestled, all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar plums danced in their heads". However, they are a VERY old kind of sweet/candy, and I have traced some recipes right back to the Middle Ages in one guise or another, usually with minced meat hence “sweet meat”. This recipe can be made as a boozy after dinner adult treat, or with orange juice so the children can dream of them dancing in their heads! NB: These are great fun to make with the children, as they are easy as well as being "no-cook". If you plan to make them for gifts or to sell, pack them into attractive cellophane bags, glass jars or boxes and add a pretty ribbon as well as a label of ingredients and storage details. This recipe is part of my Old Fashioned Sweet Shop collection of recipes, sweets, candies, fudges, sugar plums and chocolates! -- posted by French Tart

Buttermilk and Sour Cherry Scones for Afternoon Tea and Picnics

A delightful and EASY scone recipe that is perfect for a proper afternoon tea or to take on a picnic. Dried sour cherries are sensational and give a deep essence of cherry flavour to these scones, whilst the buttermilk makes them light and airy. This is a casual eating scone, easy to rustle up, and is perfect when eaten fresh from the oven with butter and maybe some cherry jam and cream too! If taking on a picnic, wrap the scone in a clean tea towel to keep it warm and pack the butter and jam separately. Makes one large scone, which is marked to split into wedges when served. -- posted by French Tart
