Scones

These are typical English scones as would be served at tea-time. They are best eaten the same day and even better if they are still warm. It is traditional to serve them with strawberry jam and clotted or whipped cream. I like to butter them too.
I use the basic recipe. Work quickly when making the dough and don’t handle too much with hot hands. I roll out on a marble surface because that is always very cool. -- posted by Carol-SA

Cinnamon-Cappuccino-Pecan Scones

This recipe is from the www.kingarthurflour.com website. "Dusky-dark from cinnamon and espresso, these scones are moist, crumbly, and packed with flavor." Tips from our bakers: To make now, serve later, prepare the scones up to the point where they're shaped and ready to go into the oven. Freeze on a baking sheet, then place in a plastic bag, removing as much air as possible, and store in the freezer for up to 2 months. To bake, place frozen scones on a baking sheet and bake for about 25 minutes in a preheated 400°F oven. -- posted by senseicheryl

Blueberry Drop Scones

These are pretty easy and moderately healthy. I usually prefer triangles, but these are too sticky for that. Instead of adding flour, I make them drop scones. They aren't terribly sweet, so you may want to increase sugar to 1/2 cup. In trying to make a healthier version, I opt for a bit less. Also, it's fine to use only ap flour. -- posted by The Legal Chef

Orange Yogurt Scones

This is a great breakfast or snack.
"My mother handed down this recipe to me when I moved out of the house," recalls Hollye Chapman of Corvallis, Oregon. "It produces a very light scone that tastes great with orange marmalade, lemon curd or most kinds of jam. Use any flavor fruit yogurt if you don't have orange," she adds

I tore this out of the newspaper several years ago. One time, I thought I lost it and panicked, so I thought I'd better get it on 'Zaar! The original recipe calls for chocolate chips, but I've tried with other things and it's just as good. -- posted by erinBOberrin

I found this loverly recipe in a cooking magazine and it instantly appealed to me! It very easy and quick to put together and makes for a wonderful breakfast. Since I like to spread my scones with some jam, I use less sugar. So if you want them to be sweeter, just take more sugar. -- posted by Lalaloula

Orange Eggs Benedict

This dish is truly spectacular, perfect for a birthday, anniversary, Mother's Day, or any other special brunch occasion. My hubby discovered it in The New Basics Cookbook by Rosso & Lukins a few years ago. He had forgotten to get reservations at my favorite restaurant for Mother's Day brunch so he made this instead. It was better than my favorite restaurant! The original recipe says it serves 4. But it is very rich and it's enough food for 8 if you're serving with a side of fresh fruit. That cuts the calories and fat in half. -- posted by appleydapply

Very English Scones

Adapted from the Be-Ro home recipes book. As an english person I actually have no idea why scones are considered so British. But these are great with tea, a good breakfast food and look very pretty. You can use a variety of fruit fillings (my favourite is glace cherrys), to be honest I think any dried fruit will work as long as it's chopped to a good size (think around the size of a sultana). Also the recipe calls for 8oz self raising flour but when I made these this morning I used 4oz self raising, 4oz plain and 1 teaspoon baking powder and that worked wonderfully. The salt is optional, you can use margarine or butter and caster sugar is white granulated basically. Handle lightly for best results. It's a versatile recipe, enjoy. -- posted by SallyDe

Kellie's Basic, Go Ahead and Mess With It, Scone Recipe

This recipe started as a Lemon Glazed Scone recipe I found in a locally published recipe book, you know the kind sold as a money raiser with personal recipes from community members. Over the years I have adapted it many times. It has become the basic formula I use to make scones for tea with friends, family gatherings or on those mornings when I wake up and find we are out of bread and cereal. I add whatever I have in the cupboard or fridge. It has never let me down.

I encourage you to substitute and add stuff. The basic formula is mix together the dry stuff, cut in the shortening, stir in any lumpy additions then mix in the wet stuff. Have fun with it! -- posted by redplaid huf

Note: I include the grams as this is what hubby is more used to use and it might be a litttle more accurate). -- posted by Iceland

This recipe uses a scone/damper dough for the bread, so no major kneading or waiting around for dough to rise. What you use to fill it is limited only by your imagination - pepperoni, ham, chicken, whatever takes your fancy!
Singin' Hinnies - Northumbrian Tea-Time Griddle Cakes/Scones

Served warm and oozing with butter, these fabulous fruity griddlecakes make a great treat for breakfast or afternoon tea. I remember my grandmother making these when I was little; she lived in a very old stone cottage in Northumberland, and made these on a huge cast iron black griddle, or girdle as they were also called! We used to eat them hot from the griddle, with butter – in front of a roaring wood fire during the winter months. Singin' hinnies are a type of fried fruit scone or griddle cake, so called as they 'sing' and sizzle whilst cooking. 'Hinny' is a Northern term for endearment used especially to children - my grandmother used to call me "hinny". Similar to singin' hinnies are Northumbrian griddle cakes, also known as Gosforth gridies.
If you are making them for a children’s party or at Christmas, put coins that have been briefly boiled, then wrapped in greaseproof paper, in the middle of some of the singin’ hinnies. -- posted by French Tart

Classic Tea Time Cream Scones

This lovely recipe for scones comes from the book "Simply Scones" by L. Weiner and B. Albright, which I got for my bday yesterday.
They taste great as is or spread with jam or clotted cream or even with some cheese melted on top.
Buckingham Palace Scones

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"What better for this Buckingham Palace than a scone recipe from the lovely Kew Royal Botanical Gardens … Maids in Waiting…

Reportedly from the restaurant across from the Kew
The Maids in Waiting (I think that is the name) in KEW right across the street from the Royal Botanical Gardens ..they also make these wonderful little cakes called Maids in Waiting!!
otherwise, the Orangerie in Kensington."

The above was from my friend Katharine who came over to the house with more friends, to make me a post party brunch. What a kind and thoughtful present! We all had a wonderful time. I relaxed with one of my friends in the parlor, while the others cooked. This is why they called the scones, "Buckingham Palace Scones". -- posted by Sweetiebarbara
