Found this in the Food & Drink Weekly of the Tribune. I love figs & this sounds like it will be a delicious & healthy caky quick bread. Just the thing toasted for afternoon tea.
They noted this recipe was adapted from a Marian Manners recipe that ran on Jan. 26, 1969, in the Los Angeles Times. -- posted by Buster's friend

Branana Bread

This banana bread from Janet and Greta Podleski is not just delicious but healthy, too! I made it using 1-1/2 cups of all-purpose flour mixed with 1/2 cup wheat bran, but if you live in an area where Robin Hood Nutri-Blend Flour is available, use 2 cups of that instead. Also, the bananas have to be VERY ripe for maximum sweetness, as this recipe has very little sugar in it. -- posted by Irmgard

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake

A quick and easy recipe from Gourmet Magazine (June 2009) for a tender buttermilk cake topped with a nice, sugary crunch. This recipe works with any berries (including frozen). Make sure to allow the cake to cool before inverting (or it may fall apart) or you can serve it straight from the pan with vanilla ice cream. -- posted by blucoat

Wheat Berry Bread

I buy a Honey Wheat berry bread from Earth Grains. I just love the wheat berries in it. I found this recipe in From All Around The World Cookbook by Sheila Lukins and I hope it proves to be just a good. I'm not counting the time it takes to cook berries or for the dough to rise. But like most breads it will be an all morning job. -- posted by Charlotte J

Cinnabon-Ish Cinnamon Rolls (Gluten-Free)

This is a combination of two or three recipes. Makes some absolutely delicious and decadent cinnamon rolls. The frosting is good straight out of the bowl. I have successfully substituted buckwheat flour for the millet flour in this recipe and a review has used oat flour to great success as well.
Zucchini Bread- Williams Sonoma

Our garden had a zucchini that got out of hand, so we put it to use and made a double recipe of this bread. It was so good, now when I go out into my garden I pretend I don't see the small tender squash just so that I can pretend they got out of hand so I wouldn't be able to use them in anything but this bread.
Kellie's Basic, Go Ahead and Mess With It, Scone Recipe

This recipe started as a Lemon Glazed Scone recipe I found in a locally published recipe book, you know the kind sold as a money raiser with personal recipes from community members. Over the years I have adapted it many times. It has become the basic formula I use to make scones for tea with friends, family gatherings or on those mornings when I wake up and find we are out of bread and cereal. I add whatever I have in the cupboard or fridge. It has never let me down.

I encourage you to substitute and add stuff. The basic formula is mix together the dry stuff, cut in the shortening, stir in any lumpy additions then mix in the wet stuff. Have fun with it! -- posted by redplaid huf

Heavenly Cornbread

This is Southern cornbread, not a sweet cornbread. White cornmeal is essential. Make sure you cut the egg into the cornmeal with a fork...not a mixer or whisk. To make this cornbread heavenly, you are looking for a nice pourable batter, similar to pancake batter. This is best made in a seasoned cast iron skillet. -- posted by breezermom

Coyotes Blue (Or Yellow) Cornmeal Bread

This sweet, and very moist cornbread is served at Coyotes Deli & Grill in Banff and the recipe was printed in Bon Appétit (Nov. 2001). Pine nuts add a surprisingly delicious element.
The blue cornmeal makes for a beautiful presentation but it tastes just as delicious with yellow. Toast pinenuts on a cookie sheet at 350°F for 5 minutes. Best served warm. Leftovers, if you have any, make an awesome twist on French toast. -- posted by blucoat

No Knead Pumpkin Yeast Bread

I found this recipe on another website, but there was no printer-friendly format. So I'm posting it here so I and other cooks can print it better. I have changed the procedures to reflect what worked best for me.

Most of the preparation time is letting the bread rise for hours and hours. I made this bread the other day and it was so easy and delicious that I would make it every day. Just let it rise during the night or while I'm at work and bake it when it's convenient. It has a really crispy crust and is soft in the center. To enhance the texture I added 1 tsp of vital wheat gluten for every cup of flour I used. It makes the bread heavier and chewier and helps the dough to rise. All three cups of flour listed in the recipe do not blend into the dough, so try adding flour one half cup at a time. If you want to make plain bread just substitute the same amount of water for the pumpkin.

When letting the dough rise, if it's in a warm spot (say a sunroom) it's good to cover it with a damp towel. If the area is not that warm a dry towel will do. -- posted by Valeria

Algerian Khobz El Dar -- Semolina Bread

This is the traditional bread of every home in Algeria, hence it's name which transaltes into English as 'Bread of the House'. Every home has a different version & this particular recipe is from my lovely sister in law 'Um Youcef' ;)
Just a word of warning, if you have never made this kind of bread before, you will be shocked at how sticky & hard to work with the dough is. Unlike a regular bread, when your dough is too sticky you may add more flour - here adding more flour or semolina will make things worse...instead add a little water & knead gently with your fingertips . Water will always make the dough come together & away from your hands & the mixing bowl. You can also knead the dough in a KA or similar mixer with a sturdy dough hook. -- posted by Um Safia

Coconut-Zucchini Bread

I developed this recipe as a semi-healthy breakfast bread I can give to my kids in the morning. I think it's delicious as-is, but if you want to make it in a more traditional style, you can make any or all of the following substitutions:
2 cups sugar for 1/2 cups + 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt,
1 cup vegetable oil for 3/4 cup grapeseed oil + 1/4 cup ground flaxseed,
3 cups all-purpose flour for 1 1/2 cup all-purpose + 1 1/2 ww pastry flour.

Also, my kids don't like nuts in sweet breads and muffins, so I use chocolate chips. You could replace those with more coconut or chopped nuts. -- posted by 2hot2handle

From Cooking Free by Carol Fenster. This turned out great, even in a regular bread pan. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Carol says: "Put this in a cold oven for a crisp crust and nice texture. If this doesn't work in your oven, let the bread rise until level with top of pan; then bake in preheated 425° F oven for 25-30 minutes. Use a pan specially designed for French bread." It is critical to cool bread completely before slicing and is easier to slice with electric knife. This is a quicker bread because you don't have to let it rise before baking. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Basic Wheat Bread

Always turns out well, but needs plenty of time to rise. This is a recipe from an English magazine, passed along with a stamp of approval from my great Aunt. Since my recipes are a collection of American and European, I rely on my kitchen scale. I've never converted this recipe to American measurements. I added the gluten to the recipe as it improves the rise. I slice and freeze the second loaf. Then, pull out as many slices as I need for toast each morning. -- posted by what's for supper?

Chef/cookbook author/restaurateur Laura Frankel uses this challah recipe in her own home. It uses some whole wheat flour and results in dense, chewy, and delicious loaves.

Challot can be baked and stored, covered overnight at room temperature (not in the refrigerator) or can be frozen for one month.

Cinnamon-Swirl Pumpkin Rolls

This recipe is from King Arthur Flour and is a delicious fall twist on cinnamon buns. And, they are somewhat healthier because they contain some whole wheat flour (and a vegetable!). The dough is very easy to handle and rises up beautifully. These would also be good with a cream cheese icing.
Dough requires a total of at least 2 1/2 hour rising time (if you use liquid milk instead of dry, you may require slightly longer rising time). You can make the dough the day before. Just let them rise for about 30 minutes, wrap them up, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, let them rise a bit more and warm up, unwrap and then bake. -- posted by blucoat

Focaccia Flat Bread Homemade (Bread Machine)

An Italian flatbread brushed with olive oil and flavored with grated Parmesan cheese, galic salt and grated Italian Seasoning makes this bread heavenly. A good friend of mine brought this over for Sunday Night football. We cut it into squares and topped with Prosciutto Panino rolled in Mozzarella cheese and toasted under the broiler for 5 min.... oh my, this is dangerously good! It is so easy to make. Can't wait to have this with a bowl of soup or top with Pizza topping, or to just dip in garlic olive oil. This comes from a bread machine cookbook with instructions to layer ingredients liquid first. Yummers! :) Family Favorite!
Note "malt drink powder" IS NOT OVALTINE. It's actually MALT POWDER, which is available from baking suppliers or brewing suppliers. If you can't get it, use malt syrup, honey or brown sugar. The retardation step (refrigerating the formed bagels) is necessary for proper hydration and flavor development; don't skip it!
Teff Muffins With Fruit & Nuts

The grains of teff are so small, the bulk of the grain consists of the bran and germ. This makes teff nutrient dense as the bran and germ are the most nutritious parts of any grain. This grain has a very high calcium content. It is considered to have an excellent amino acid composition, with lysine levels higher than wheat or barley. Teff is high in protein, carbohydrates, and fiber. It contains no gluten so it is appropriate for those with gluten intolerance. Teff flour, brown rice flour & arrowroot flour can be purchased at whole food stores. -- posted by lwatkins

Spicy Cheesy Corn Muffins

This is a very easy way to make spicy and cheesy corn muffins that would be great served on their own (as a snack) or with soup. The best thing is that the ingredients are very cheap!! I came up with this while playing around with Jiffy corn muffin mix which costs $0.45 at my grocery store.
