Beautiful Stained-Glass Hard Candy

This was one of the first candy recipes I ever made. These candies are crystal clear and can be used as decorations for a Christmas tree or a window. Cooking and prep times are approximate, and don't include making your own molds if you wish to do that. -- posted by Annisette

Crazy Cooler Cooked Potatoes

I could NOT believe this recipe! Potatoes that are cooked and served in an ice chest like an Igloo cooler! What's more, they are YUMMY! like twice baked potatoes. This is the easiest and funniest way to cook a massive amount of potatoes. I usually cook them until they are almost done- not mushy just to the point where they could cook for a few minutes more- and let them finish in the cooler IF I have about an hour before having to open the cooler again. IF I need to serve them sooner I cook the potatoes until they are close to done or done but not mushry. They come out great and what a conversation piece for your next picnic, BBQ, get together, etc... You gotta try it to believe it!

PS.. You CAN do these in a foil pan too for easy clean up. You can even put the pan in the cooler! -- posted by mama's kitchen

Candy Sushi

A fun candy treat to make for a themed party - to pull kids in and inspire imagination! From the RR archives. ;) Maybe for a Japanese dinner party when the kiddos may not eat sushi with you--this might help them participate for dessert? Or just a fun kids party--or even Halloween. ;) I haven't tried these yet, so I guessed on the times, but will update once I do. I am a slow one in the kitchen though!! *Increase amounts according to number of people/portions desired* -- posted by Mommy Diva

Blackbird Pie......or Chicken, Leek and Potato Pie!

Yes, it's an old-fashioned Blackbird pie! This is made with leftovers & tasted so good that I decided to post the recipe or is it an assembly job?! Very easy, I am almost embarrassed to say that I made it with ready-made pastry! Well, it was after all a quick lunch with an assault on the fridge! This is what I found, mashed potato, cooked leeks & some cooked chicken breasts. There was an open packet of ham, and that completed the pie! The only vital item is a blackbird pie funnel, oh yes & some ready-made pastry & leftovers! -- posted by French Tart

Bleedy Cake

A truly gruesome recipe! Perfect for those of you who are Valentine's Day cynics or Halloween enthusiasts. The original bleedy cake is a heart-shaped, double-layer chocolate cake with pink frosting and frou-frou Valentine-y decorations. The cake is served by hacking it in two with a cleaver -- making it bleed. The effect is quite dramatic if done right! You can also make a bleedy Halloween cake by making a round or square-shaped cake and decorating it with Halloween decorations. The syrup makes this cake pretty sweet, so I recommend using recipe #77221 for the frosting. It's a gorgeous, white, fluffy frosting (that's not too sweet, and the recipe makes A LOT of it -- even if you cut it in half)!
Peanut Butter, Honey and Chocolate Chip Wrap

I made this for my 7 year old and 3 year old today. One loved it, and the other said, "Who puts chocolate and peanut butter together?" LOL My 3 year old ate it all, and she never finishes her lunches. I cut mine into little bites and tried adding raisins on top for eyeballs so I could call them "bug wraps." Of course, they didn't stick to the tortilla without the peanut butter mooshing out, and she looked at me like I was slightly off my rocker for all my effort. *sniff* I wanted my kids to have the protein in peanut butter, and the chocolate chips were meant to entice them to keep eating. This would even work for breakfast, I would think. Amounts are approximate since I went with what looked right at the time. Remember, honey is not safe for kids younger than 3 (botulism risk). I hope you like this! -- posted by Burned Toast

Different Chocolate Haystacks

I went through all the haystack recipes on zaar and did not see these. They are a little different as they don't use the chow mein noodles. They are easy and too good to leave off. I want to try these with dry roasted peanuts and maybe butter instead of the peanut butter just for a change, there is something about the sweet and salty that makes you keep eating them.
This too came out of my Texas cookbook.
I don't remember how many these make so I took a wild guess. -- posted by Chef #580861 Nesbitt

Real Snowy Day Snowman

Is there snow on the ground? Then, what are you waiting for? Go out and make a snowman! The original recipe calls for lumps of coals for the eyes, rocks for the mouth, buttons for the front, but Zaar won't allow that, so how about different vegetables to dress up your snowman? Add twigs for the arms, a scarf for his neck and a hat for his head! Use your inmagination and substitute different vegetables or fruits, but most of all, have fun! -- posted by Sharon123

Dr. Seuss' Oobleck

This NON-EDIBLE recipe is named after the strange material that falls from the sky in Dr. Seuss' book, Bartholomew and the Oobleck.

It's a really fun recipe to be used as a science experiment of sorts with young children. ----Is it a solid? ---- Is it a liquid? **It's a liquid until pressure is applied. Hit it hard and it feels like you are hitting a wall! Touch it gently and the material will flow around your fingers like water! **Have fun using different utensils to play- see what form it takes while using different cups, spoons, bowls, etc.

Gingered Apple-Acorn Smoothie

The "Acorn" is acorn squash, of course! ;) Further adventures in trying to feed my liquid-tarian 13-month-old son. When I was making it, I had some fresh grated ginger lying around from another recipe and the smell seemed to be calling me to put it into the smoothie. Turned out to be a great combination. I didn't include cooling time for the squash. If you don't want to cool it, you could probably just add some crushed ice and blend. -- posted by mliss29

Zenzai - Dango in Azuki

Zenzai is the name for mochi dumplings, also known as "dango" made in a soup of sweet red beans (azuki).

It is an ancient Japanese recipe believed to dispel illness. I happened to eat it in a Bento box at Mitsuwa Marketplace and fell in love!

Get the ingredients at a Japanese grocer; Mochiko is sweet rice flour, azuki are dried red beans.
Tell your kids it's eyeball soup for a hoot :) -- posted by Gillian Spence

Beanies and Cecils

My Mother used to make this for us for rainy day lunches. Since half of us were fussy eaters she would give funny names to meals to get us to eat them and hot dogs and beans became Beanies and Cecils. Beany and Cecil was a TV show and Cecil was a seasick sea dragon (to see what they looked like - http://www.tvparty.com/bgifs17/beany.jpg). Try this for your kids and see if they like them better with a funny name and their own Seasick Sea Dragon puppet. -- posted by Secret Agent

A taste of Miami on your dinner table! You can smell these sandwiches cooking all over Miami Beach. Taking a walk down there is something to experience. This recipe is a taste of heaven on a roll. This recipe makes 6 whole sandwiches and serves 12. They are large and should be cut in half. Recipe time does not include the 6-24 marination time for the roast pork. You will need the Cuban roll for this sandwich.
Diet Soda Cake or Cupcakes With Frosting

The popular Diet Soda Cake! I invented a frosting for this cake that is light and creamy and really great. You can make a frosting for it if you'd like, but you really do not need it. YOU MUST STORE THIS CAKE IN THE FRIDGE ESPECIALLY IF YOU USE THE FROSTING! This cake, including the icing, freezes wonderfully! A 2"x2" piece is 2 points (approx. 100 cals and a scant 1/2g fat). The frosting is free for one serving, but is 1/2 point for 2 servings. -- posted by Humble Bee

Stained Glass Paint for Cookies

I'm terrible with a pastry bag and royal icing to decorate cookies. Just have no talent for it. I found this recipe at brownielocks.com and had to share it because the cookies turned out so well! Unlike other "stained glass" cookies that require hard candies that are, well, just too hard on a soft cookie, this makes a beautiful and edible solution. I did pipe the outlines in royal icing. Important: Use a paint brush and do a light coat first and let dry. After the first coat, you can daub on to fill up to your lines for a thicker coat. Cooking time is drying time. -- posted by MawMaw Angela

Bloody Hot Chocolate

to be served with "bones" made of piped meringue. swiped from martha stewart if you can believe it. seems a bit gruesome for her. from the pics it seems really life-like. could add grand marne for a chocolate-orange taste. -- posted by spiritussancto
