Tangy Guacamole

A refreshing lemon/limey guacamole recipe that is neither too spicy nor too tangy. Great for someone who cannot handle too much spice or heat. The lemon/lime mixture will keep the avocado from browning and give it a refreshing tart/tangy taste. This is a slight variation from a recipe a Texan friend shared with me. Great with tortilla chips. Enjoy! -- posted by Chef DNA1611

Locket's Savoury

This recipe is based on a savoury dish served at a famous old London restaurant/gentleman's club. It is essentially an upscale open faced cheese sandwich. Serve this as a cheese coarse at the end a dinner party (it's a good excuse to open another bottle of wine). This would also make a lovely brunch dish or quick but elegant late supper for after the theatre. -- posted by Chef Regina V.
Sugared Cranberries

Here’s a beautiful snack and appetizer that always goes over well both at Thanksgiving and at Christmas time. Sparkling sugared cranberries make a sensationally pretty addition to your snack tray and is sensationally fun in the mouth. It pops in your mouth and releases an addictive tart sweetness that makes you grab another, and another, and another. Try it. You’ll be hooked. If not, at least you’ll fight urinary tract infections and load up on antioxidants.

"Put very simply, canapés are nothing more than tops and bottoms with endless variations ensuring you will never, ever get bored with serving them." This is what The Passionate Cook, Johanna Wagner, has to say! They give you sustenance while chatting before sitting down to the meal. In all supermarkets thwew is a wide selection of pre-made finger food; vol-au-vents, mini quiches [which are awesome!] salmon rolls, or cheese bites, but isn't it more satisfying making your own??? This canapé consists of a fritter made with (fresh, frozen or canned) corn and a simple batter & adding chilli flakes and coriander! This dish can be made with another type of bottom and store-bought salsa & guacamole, season it(to make it your own) serve with coriander leaves & VOILA! ;) -- posted by Manami

I use a local blue cheese, such as Roquefort in this salad; however, please do use a local blue cheese of your choice - any creamy or robust blue cheese will marry well with the pears and tart dressing. Verjuice, or verjus, is the juice of unripe grapes. This staple of French provincial cooking, a key ingredient in Dijon mustard, has the tartness of lemon juice and the acidity of vinegar, but the harshness of neither. Its delicate flavour is ideal for everything from stocks to sweet syrups - as long as you know what you're doing. Verjus was also a common ingredient used in English cooking throughout the Middle Ages. I try to make a batch of verjus every year with the green grapes from my non-dessert grape vine - as I love cooking with it. This recipe came from an old copy of Bon Appetit magazine from 2005. Prep time includes the time it takes the pears to cool. -- posted by French Tart

This recipe comes from the cookbook that accompanied my first microwave, in 1974. These salty, crunchy pecans are good for snacking. They also go well with drinks.

You may want to adjust the amount of seasoned salt to your taste, particularly if you use salted butter. -- posted by Desert Baker

Fresh Fruit Dip

From the Better Homes & Gardens Easy Everyday Low Carb Cookbook that I sent to my swap partner FloridaNative. This is a refreshing fruit dip and I used it with fresh pineapple cubes, apples and peaches during a get-together. I did tweak it in that the original recipe called for only an 1/8th tsp of either cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger but I love the combination of cinnamon and nutmeg so I used about a 1/4 tsp of each. -- posted by HokiesLady

Peach and Prosciutto Appetizer

This is a delicious appetizer that makes quite a statement. There are combos like this but the secret ingredient is the AGED balsamic. If you don't have it and can't afford it look at the hint for an alternative. The aged is worth it though and now I use it for other dressings. This is from Brumley's originally. Delicious and a great presentation too. No cook for those great summer get togethers but a terrific treat anytime. Enjoy.
Fresh Figs With Stilton and Walnuts in a Honey Drizzle Dressing

A new fig recipe for this year! Similar to my Recipe #250866 but with blue cheese and a honey drizzle dressing. I like to tuck a few fig leaves amongst the salad for colour........but please do wipe them first! Serve these figs with crusty bread, some mixed herb and salad leaves.......and a glass of chilled wine. Quantities for figs depend on the size; allow one or two large figs per person or, between three and six for medium to small figs. This makes a fabulous dinner party starter, or a light salad for lunch..........I sometimes serve this for the cheese course too, for something a little different. -- posted by French Tart

This is a great appetizer or main dish from "Kosher By Design" by Susie Fishbein. The sweetness makes it perfect for Rosh Hashanah. To make a pareve recipe, replace the chicken with 2 cans of salmon (skins and bones removed). Although this is a very easy recipe, the chicken must marinate for at least 8 hours so start this one the day before. For a healthier option, you can bake these in the oven.
Low Sodium Guacamole

This recipe is easy to make and a great crowd-pleaser. Most store-bought guacamole has alot of sodium in it. This recipe is low sodium, heart healthy, and coumadin-safe. I haven't met a person yet who didn't love it! Make sure you get fresh and ripe ingredients and it will make a huge difference.

The recipe does not call for salt, but if you want to add some, regular salt, lite salt and No Salt all will work for it. I would not reccomend more that a tsp of any of them or it will taste bitter. -- posted by Meagan F.

The heat they bring and the sweetness of the dish are offset by this bubbly Kahlua cocktail - 2 oz Kahlua Coffe Liqueur in a highball glass and club soda as needed.- a wonderful drink for a holiday toast!" ;) -- posted by Manami

Roast Eggplant With Walnuts

This wonderful appetizer, when served with warm pita, marinated strips of red pepper & tasty olives, can be a meal unto itself... or tucked into a pita with the aforementioned for lunch, a very nice lunch. Per the Times: "This Turkish recipe is from Paula Wolfert's upcoming book, "The Slow Mediterranean Kitchen," which will be published in October by Wiley. Wolfert notes that the slower the grilling, the smokier the flavor of the eggplant. She thanks Dr. Ayse Baysal for sharing the recipe."
Note: When large eggplants are roasted whole, you may notice black juices seeping out of the skin. If this happens, immediately slit the eggplant on one side and drain on a slanted board in the sink. -- posted by Buster's friend

Val's Cranberry Salsa

My friend Val shared this recipe with me last year. It is a new favorite, and one that I plan on taking many places over the holiday season, as it is different. Best served with Wheat Thins, this salsa is yummy and a must try! The original recipe called for a 1 pound package of cranberries; I've found that fresh cranberries are now packaged in 12 oz. portions, and this size works. Don't forget to allow time for chilling, to allow flavors to develop...This will make enough for 2 blocks of cream cheese, so you have 1 to serve, and 1 to share! -- posted by alligirl

Sweet Braised Whole Scallions (Molly Stevens)

This would be a fabulous, easy side dish for Thanksgiving. "As the scallions braise, the sweet anise flavor of the tarragon mingles with their oniony juices, giving the whole dish a candy-like sweetness.
