Irish Italian Spaghetti

Spicy Tomato Meat Sauce for Spaghetti from Playboy Magazine

I got this many years ago from a Playboy Magazine, lol. It's not a real thick sauce, you could add some tomato paste if you want it thicker. We like it just the way it is. I serve it on vermicelli, my personal preference, with garlic bread and a salad. -- posted by Imagenie

Another family favorite that is always made for any gathering! Even though my sisters, brother and I love to cook, we still like to make our favorite comfort foods. This serves a lot and can be made the day ahead which make it an easy dish to bring.
The original recipe is from Allrecipes.I have made changes to this and this is truly one of my favorite recipes!! With the calories this has, I hate to even say I like the Ronzoni smart taste or Dreamfield pasta !! Once you see the calories it's like " why bother "? But at least in my mind, I think I am doing myself a favor !!Daughter # 2 just called me yesterday for the recipe so she could make it for her sister's who are coming for dinner. -- posted by pollyw

My Version of Rachael Ray's Chinese Spaghetti and Meatballs

After seeing this recipe on an episode of 30 Minute Meals, I decided to tweak it a little to suit what I had on hand and what I knew would work in my house. It's a fairly simple (although, I won't claim that it only takes 30 minutes...nothing ever does, does it?) meal that is pretty healthy with the lean protein, the whole grain, and all the veggies. Although as with any Asian inspired meal, the soy sauce does account for a lot of sodium. -- posted by ms_bold

This is just awesome. We even eat this on its own, without any pasta, sometimes. It's a hearty Italian chili that way and lip-smacking delicious. It's wonderful over penne, rotini, or good ol' p-sketti ;-) if you're a traditionalist! Any way you serve it, you'll love it.
White Spaghetti Pie

I asked an Italian girl that I worked with, what a good spaghetti side dish might be. She told me about spaghetti pie, made with eggs, milk, cheese pasta and spices. It sounded pretty good to me so I tried it, with a few add ins. I figured why not put the whole meal in one casserole. This is one of my husband favorites. I have made it with chicken as well.
Mimi's Spaghetti Sauce

This is my mother's home made spaghetti sauce, which I like to use when making lasagna or baked ziti too. It's not real thick, and not real thin. You can usually serve it after cooking only 1 hour, but additional time brings out the taste better. The only alteration I made to Mimi's recipe is I added chopped green pepper for DH. You can also make it with ground buffalo or ground turkey for a leaner version. -- posted by FloridaNative

I subscribe to a neat magazine called "The Week", which is the weekly version of "USA Today" There is always a recipe which is different from anything we usually eat.
Spaghetti and Meatballs

I got this recipe from an Australian magazine, Super food ideas in 2005. These meatballs are a real family favourite, so tasty and we usually have the makings in the pantry & freezer. Recipe says it serves 4, but we always seem to have leftovers for lunch as well. When adding seasonings to the meatballs before cooking, remember feta can be salty too. Also, I nomally just dice the feta into smallish cubes rather than crumbling. -- posted by Cookingupastorm

Chicken and Spaghetti

My SIL served this to my DH while he was in Texas and when he got back to Arizona he telephoned her for the recipe. This really is a great recipe and apparently quite southern in its roots. This recipe makes two good-sized casseroles. Bake one and keep the other handy in the freezer (see directions at the end of recipe). The original recipe came from Southern Living magazine, but I have tweeked it a bit. Note that instead of the 5-pound chicken, you may use 2 smaller chickens. You may even use rotisserie chickens with boxed low-sodium, low-fat broth. -- posted by Lorraine of AZ

Christmas Spaghetti Pie

One Christmas, like so many unfortunately, we were extremely pressed for money and still hadn't bought presents for the extended family. I went waaaay out on limb with this one and it was by far the most welcomed gift of the season to many - not to mention a whole lot of fun to put together and deliver. I went to the grocery store and got a bunch of free cardboard boxes (the best are the boxes that the egg cartons come in because they have handles) and I went to the dollar store to get some towels to place inside of the boxes. My kids "wrapped" the outside of the boxes in wrapping paper and I placed the spaghetti pie (cooked in disposable pie plates) on top of the towels, to keep warm, inside the boxes along with some garlic bread, a bottle of inexpensive wine, some brownies and a hand picked $5 dvd from walmart. We then delivered the piping hot packages a few days after the holidays when everyone needed a break from cooking and entertaining. It was so much fun and so well received that I can't believe I haven't done it every year since... -- posted by GotBoxer?

Brentwood Pasta

I received this in an email from our local news web site courtesy of J Bucks. This is my DH favorite meal at J Bucks. I usually do not post a recipe without trying but since this recipe is suppose to be directly from the restaurant, I am posting. The serving size is not posted so I am assuming this is for 2 (their serving sizes are huge). You make up the sauce first. The recipe does not state how much sauce this does make. The instructions are not as thorough as I would like. Once I try the recipe, I will update. -- posted by happynana

Baked Chicken Tagliatelle With Mushrooms and Peppers

Another old favourite that is always tasty. The recipe essentially has 3 steps - 1. cooking the chicken (I remove the skin to remove the fat content to the recipe), 2. preparing the mushroom and capsicum/peppers mixture and 3. making the sauce. The taglitelle can be cooked at the same time as the chicken. I always use spray oil to reduce the fat content. The recipe looks good when green (spinach) taglitelle is used. Vary the cheese types and amounts to suit your tastes - grueyere can alos be used. -- posted by amanda l b

Creamy Cajun Chicken Spaghetti

This is a (slightly) healthier version of one of my favorite comfort foods, which I adapted from my sister-in-law. You can always add more veggies to make this dish healthier...They'll be smothered with cheese so you won't even notice they're there, which is great for the kids! I recommend saving unused vegetable parts for a homemade stock. And, for easy clean up, use a plastic Crockpot liner. -- posted by Rachel Potachel

Freezer full of deer meat and had to come up with something new. So my daughter and I came up with this for dinner. This could be a Oamc meal just cool meatballs and freeze, freeze sauce and when the time comes place thawed into stock pot and let simmer 30 minutes. Even easier for the cooking day would be to place the frozen meatballs in bottom of crock pot and broken up frozen sauce on top of meatballs turn on low all day. -- posted by Shawn C

Creamy White Wine Sauce and Italian Chicken over Pasta

This is a super easy, ultra tasty recipe that calls for white wine, a packet of Italian dressing mix, chicken and pasta. Upon my first time making it, I already had leftover cooked chicken breast, so I made the sauce on the stovetop and let simmer for 20 minutes, chopped the chicken and added it to the sauce and served over pasta. I used 1-1/2 cups of white wine to yield a sauce that was a little more runny, but consistency is a matter of preference. I also used 2 freshly chopped roma tomatoes, rather than the sundried. -- posted by Thumbs

Creamy Spinach Pasta Casserole

I had a bag of frozen spinach thawed and wanted to make regular greek spinach rice, but then my brain got toggled with cream and cheese and mushrooms and pasta for some reason, one thing led to another and the creation of this recipe happened. It was enjoyed, so if it sounds like something you would like, go along and play around with my recipe and tell me about it.
Verdict: Not bad. It was a tad undersalted for my taste but i think in general its better than over salted. And you cant tell how salty the cheeses would be. So i would stick to the amounts of salt and just add salt while you are eating if needed.
Optional in section B: you could add some chopped whole canned tomatoes - 1 cup. Also for those who prefer some meat in this dish, in section B you could add some cooked ham or turkey.

Veggie " Everything but the Kitchen Sink" Pasta Sauce

I love chunky garden vegetable pasta sauce, and after trying a few on Zaar I modified my favorite spaghetti sauce recipe recipe #22782, to have fresh tomatoes instead of canned, lots of fresh vegetables, and less fat from the meat. Easily hearty enough with vegetables to omit the sausage for vegetarians.

I find it easiest to prepare the ingredients first. Slice, dice, puree, open cans etc. For stronger garlic flavor, "crack" the garlic open about ten minutes before mincing to give the oils air exposure. Use whichever ingredients you love most. The more juicy your vegetables the less water you need as the sauce will thin as the vegetables cook. It's easier to start with thick sauce and thin in out than to try to thicken the sauce later.

My instructions may seem a little elementary for some more advanced cooks, but as I learned how to do many of these techniques while developing this sauce, I wanted to include them for more novice cooks. If you have any suggestions or corrections please let me know. -- posted by @ home in SF Bay

I like to use some of the frozen red bell peppers which I have roasted and frozen last summer but store bought works well. This meal goes well with a tossed salad or grilled zucchini, as well as garlic bread and Shiraz wine.
Spaghetti and Turkey Sausage Meatballs

I started a diet and didn't want to starve myself. I have been trying to lighten up my favorite foods. Here is one version! This also make great meatball sandwiches the next day. Feel free to omit the zucchini if it isn't in season. When I feel like chopping more, I add 1/2 an onion to the sauce. You may want to adjust seasonings depending on the flavor of your sausage. I used sweet Italian and the measurements below were just fine.
Southern Italian Soup of Dried Favas, Potatoes, Cauliflower, And

****OH DEAR !! Zaar will not allow me to delete this recipe, but unless you crave BLAND and TASTELESS -- do NOT prepare it ! SO disappointing ! I added a garnish of real bacon, a handful of grated Parmesan, LOTS of S&P, and it STILL had no flavor ! SO sorry ! That's what I get for posting something I had not prepared ! I think no native Italian would serve this either . Need to find more recipes with dried Fava beans !

This from "Best of the Best Michigan Cookbook" sent to me by QueenBee for the August, '09 cookbook swap. "Served in Puglia, in south of Italy --outstanding example of impact of fine olive oil. Garnished w/additional olive oil which adds flavor, and fried pasta which adds texture."
NOTE" Be sure to have SPLIT dried favas, not whole, or you will be cooking them for hours -- posted by NurseJaney

Baked Cheesy Ham and Spaghetti Casserole

This is a favorite dish of mine for leftover ham. I like to use a mix of parmesan and white cheddar or you can use a monterey jack cheese if you prefer that, but it is just creamy and comforting. I love to bake a ham once a month. I cut it up and freeze and that way I always have a quick meal waiting to be put together. So many people only cook ham on holidays, but it is a great resource and inexpensive. Give this a try for a nice way to use your leftovers and good comfort food on a chilly night. -- posted by SarasotaCook

Italian Blue Crab Sauce

This is our Xmas Eve dinner every year. Also, my all time favorite pasta dish! This tradition started because Catholics did not eat meat on Christmas Eve and they sought out seafood based pasta dishes to serve instead. All ingredients are approximations since we never really measure anything. Alter to suit your family's tastes!
Marinara Sauce

This is a really great sratch recipe for spagetti or pizza sauce to make ahead of time I put it in the crock pot on low to simmer. If you look at the label of most spagetti sauce you buy in a store the second or third ingredient is corn syrup. After this we don't ever buy red sauce. I make this in large batches frequently and it freezes very well. -- posted by victoriansweets_cakencandy

Lynda's Spaghetti Sauce

My husband married me on the condition that I never buy a jar of spaghetti sauce and that I ALWAYS use his mother's recipe. No complaints here!
(I pretty much never let it simmer a full hour, so I can't tell you if it actually needs to simmer that long, but I think 20 minutes cooking time is plenty.) -- posted by April Wholikesitez

Cincinnati Style Chili

I have always loved Skyline Chili. I'm not from Cincinnati, but have been there. This is a combination of recipes I used to make one that has worked for me. I made it for the big superbowl party my family has every year. They loved it! I've never made it from scratch before because I didn't know what all was in the sauce. I had always used sauce packets from the grocery store. When the store was out, I had to come up with another solution. I love to cook and experiment. So...this is what I came up with. Enjoy! -- posted by earth_angel79
