Extra Soothing and Aromatic Bath Salts With Milk

Holidays can be an expensive time of year for anyone. Here are some options to making your own bath salts. These make perfect gifts for anyone (teachers, grandparents, friends, family, etc.) and kids can make them too since all the ingredients are natural - just watch the coloring! I made them as side-gifts this past Christmas and they went over so well I was told I should be selling them! I even had a friend that mad them as gifts for her bridal party! I make these for myself all the time, sometimes for a single bath at a time! They will leave your bathroom smelling wonderful for hours. -- posted by HeathersArk

Sensational Strawberry Cleanser

This is one mouth-watering, totally delicious, and couldn’t-be-easier skin treatment. Honey–known for centuries as a natural humectant–combined with cream nourishes tired skin and keeps it supple and moist, while the salicylic acid in strawberries cleanses by removing impurities and dead cells. Strawberries also clear up acne and oiliness, and make skin younger and smoother. You will emerge from this quick to make mask with fresher, happier skin. Heavenly!

Variations: Use yogurt with live and active cultures instead of the cream to balance the pH of the skin. You can also use raspberries instead of strawberries. This yogurt/raspberry combination is suitable for sensitive skin, and is less likely to cause minor irritation for anyone allergic to strawberries. -- posted by Tropical Beauty

Aspirin, Yes Aspirin, Face "mask"

I heard about this, and researched it on the internet. I have used it several times now, and love it. Apparently the aspirin has salicylic acid which works like a gentle acid peel, removing dead skin, tightening skin, shrinking pores, helping with acne & facial warts. This treatment makes your skin noticeably softer, fresh & radiant. One "recipe" for this that I found suggested adding jojoba oil to help it "stick" & not be so powdery, but I found it harder to remove & also I read that moisturizing right after would affect the action of the salicylic acid, so I assume adding oil to it might do the same, so after the first time I omitted it, consequently I wait to moisturize by a few hours, or the next day. If you have very dry skin, you may want to go ahead and moisturize right after, although I have not found this to be drying to my skin. I do this before showering as it's much easier to remove in the shower. The mixture is very powdery as it dries, so be ready to hop in the shower once it starts falling off & flying around (you'll see what I mean) to avoid getting it in your nose & eyes. I apply it to my neck, chest & both hands (including the backs) as well as my face.
**Also, use your best judgment if you have sensitive skin when you decide to try this, it's always a good idea to test a small area when you try anything new & see how you'll react before you cover your face in it. -- posted by Yrhaven (aka Condiment Queen)

Emu Bath Bombs

Emu Oil is gentle for all skin types, non-toxic & natural, non-comedogenic (does not clog pores) and hypo-allergenic (non-irritating) so its great for people with sensitive skin and allergies. Emu Oil is effective in its anti-inflammatory properties, and has been found to give a similar effect as prescriptions medication.
Easy Mango Body Butter

Easy recipe to make up. All the carrier oils and butters can be interchangeable. Detailed information on how to make body butters. This butter can be put any where on the skin that needs nourishment. It is a little heavy to put on the face in the summertime, but I have used it in the wintertime when I need more moisture. Put it on your feet and put plastic bags over your feet and let the lotion be absorbed into your feet. Excellent for lips and hands. -- posted by Abby Girl

Much less expensive than the HomeHealth brand I've been buying at the natural food stores all these years.
Cocoa Butter Antibacterial Moisturizing Lotion

I think I got this off of Delicious Living, but not sure. I'm not sure why it says "antibacterial" but this can be used on face or body, I'm sure. Probably too oily for oily skin, though. It says, "Cocoa butter is naturally water repellent and thus protective of the skin; it is especially useful for dehydrated skin." I made a modified version of this with shea butter, which I will also post. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

From Delicious Living. Glycerin attracts moisture; that's whay makes it such a great moisturizer - it brings in moisture from the air to the skin - so it can actually increase the moisture in the skin by adding water from the air.
Diy Deodorant

From BUST magazine. Vegan and free of chemicals like parabens, artificial color/fragance, sodium lauryl sulfate, and aluminum. It is not an antiperspirant so it won't stop you from sweating but it will stop you from smelling like BO, and will soothe sensitive skin. Store-bought deodorants/antiperspirants stain the underarms of my clothes. All-natural types like this one do not. All of the ingredients can be purchased from the health food store. Use any essential oils you like but lavender is a natural choice for its antibacterial properties. Lavender goes well with sweet orange and ylang-ylang. -- posted by Prose

Dead Sea Bath Salts

I got this recipe off of Welltellme.com. I adjusted it by adding the dried lavendar. If you use the lavendar, just be warned that it will leave a mess in your tub, but is easy to rinse down the drain. Dead sea salt is very therapeutic for the body. Do not rinse off. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Shea Butter Moisturizing Lotion

I took another recipe that I posted and modified it to use shea butter. Shea butter is so good for dry skin, as is aloe vera gel. This is great on lips and dry hands. Although the original recipe was meant for face, I have oily skin, so it would be too much. I will be putting this on my hands overnight with gloves. The peppermint oil is antibacterial and helps cover up the smell of the raw shea butter. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Australian Desert Salt Body Scrub

" An invigorating treatment from Aurora Spa in St. Kilda, Victoria, combining the best of Australian ingredients: salt from the Australian desert, lavender harvested in Tasmania, Australian bush flower essences, Queensland macadamia oil and the distinct aromas of the Australian bush- eucalyptus and tea tree oil. Salt has anti-inflammatory properties, remineralises the skin and reduces redness. It helps draw out toxins out of the body through osmosis and encourages skin to secrete its natural oils. Lavender helps to restore balance, enhance relaxation, refresh, energise and promote healing. This scrub is a stimulating exfoliate and leaves the skin well nourished and smooth. Do not apply to the face or on sunburnt skin, open cuts or wounds, after shaving or waxing, or to sensitive skin." -- posted by realbirdlady

Homemade Fragrance

In order to make this all-natural fragrance, you must use a CARRIER OIL, that is, an oil that has no fragrance of its own. Great options are as follows: sweet almond, grape seed, avocado, sesame, sunflower, jojoba, walnut, peanut, and pecan. Use whichever essential oils you like, but I would not recommend fragrance oils since they have a lot of alcohol and chemicals in them. Lavender, vanilla, clove, orange, and lemon essential oils are just some suggestions. -- posted by Llamatron

Homemade Lotion

You can jazz this recipe up several ways. Use an herbal tea instead of water (calendula is great for skin!), or an herb oil (like peppermint) instead of regular oil. Add optional oils AFTER the lotion has emulsified or it may not emulsify properly. Great oils to use would be almond, olive, grapeseed, or a mixture of any. Don't use vegetable oil. Tea tree oil and vitamin E oil will help keep the lotion from going bad. Keep this lotion in the fridge and warm it up in your hands before using. Great for baby massages (I massaged my wee one with almond oil and water lotion when he was younger), and also very nourishing for people who have to wash their hands a lot. -- posted by Llamatron

Shampoo and Conditioner

If you don't want to use the ones with chemicals, and don't want to pay ridiculously high prices for herbal shampoos as the healthfood stores, then this is your recipe! To add herbs to your shampoo, simply make a tea with the herbs you want, and use that instead of water. Dr. Bronner's is the soap I use for my shampoo and hand washes, but any liquid castile soap you can find will probably be fine. The apple cider vinegar rinse should be kept in the fridge or mixed beforehand to use in the shower. Simply soak your hair with it and then rinse it off to get your hair soft and silky. -- posted by Llamatron

Homemade Soap

At soapcalc.net I entered the ingredients that were available to me. This is the calculation that seemed to have the best properties. Cure time will vary according to the humidity of the curing area, but don't count on using any of this for at least a month. With soap, the longer it sits, the better it gets (within reason)! NOTE: All measurements are weight, so use a scale and not measuring cups! Use of a candy thermometer is recommended for ease of preparation and best results. Also, please read the directions prior to making this. Don't be put off by the length; my degree in English is often a curse.
Kill Yeast- a Candida Killer That Works

This is to clean out your whole body - men and women. Also a drop oil of oregano mixed with a little amount of water may do wonders for your skin if it is yeast causing you redness or pimples on your body or face. Do not wash off, though it is slightly smelly. Make sure to use a natural moisturiser after. -- posted by UmmBinat

Easy Hand Sanitizer

I wash and sanitize my hands frequently, because I work with animals. I needed something that could clean my hands but not dry them out. So I made this!
My fiancee uses this as an aftershave, and sometimes uses it as a mouthwash. I'm not sure about that last bit, but it's definitely nice as an aftershave.
Tea tree oil is a very strong antibacterial, antifungal, and has viricidal qualities, but it's not for those with very sensitive skin. I have fairly sensitive skin, and I can use it like this. Lavender and Lime oil are also good antibacterials. To make it manly, use cedar wood oil in place of the lavender.
Do not use it if your life is in danger. -- posted by IndinaMarie
