Dairy Free, Soy Free Protein Shake

A dairy and soy free alternative to milk shakes which I developed when I was run out of almond milk and rice milk. I used almond butter, but you can use peanut butter or cashew butter as well. The whey protein I use is microfiltrated whey protein which is completely lactose and casein free. -- posted by Mia in Germany

Walnut Brownie Energy Bites

Found this recipe at deliviouslivingmag.com. I haven't tried it, but I've seen recipes like it and wanted to put it here for safe keeping. The brownie bites are super healthy and I think they should be super delicious too. These are essentially raw brownie bites. Here's what it says on the website about them "Decadent and rich, these are made with good-fat almonds and antioxidant-laden cacao and sweetened with fiber-rich Medjool dates. They provide whole-food nutrition, so enjoy as a snack or treat. These can be kept at room temperature for a couple of days or will keep for at least a week refrigerated. Ingredient tips: Bob’s Red Mill makes almond meal (flour), but if you can’t find it, just use whole raw almonds and process them into a powder using your food processor. Prep tip: Keep batter from sticking to your hands by lightly coating them with coconut oil, olive oil, or even water." -- posted by dimply dots

BBQ Spice Rub

In the September 2009 Australian magazine 'super food ideas', where it features as a Father's Day BBQ Spice Rub, this recipe is described as "perfect for Dad to sprinkle over beef rump steak or other favourite BBQ meats before cooking." I'd hope that any dads worth spoiling won't be expected to BBQ for all and sundry on Father's Day but will be spoilt rotten! But for anyone BBQing at any time, this sounds yummy so I'm posting it here for safe-keeping. Personally, I'll be leaving out the dried chilli flakes. But do feel free to crank up the heat if that's your preference! My only change was to add the black pepper, but I'm in two minds about this as it's perhaps better to add this at the time. -- posted by bluemoon downunder

Homemade Soy Vanilla Ice Cream

Need a healthier alternative to regular ice cream that is easy to make? My family (including the meat and dairy lovers) loved this ice cream, and no one would have known that it didn't have milk or eggs!

You can top it however you want, and experiment with the ingredients (we've made blackberry ice cream, strawberry ice cream, healthy chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, healthy or "fake" butterfinger ice cream), etc.! You can make blizzards (aka Frosty or shake) by briefly blending it a bit in a blender.
Nut and Egg Free Cookies

These cookies are sure to be safe in any school! And taste awesome too! One of our children started at a new school this year and it turns out to be a nut and egg free school because of the seriousness of the allergies that some of the children that go there have. As a result my wife started scouring different recipes for snacks that were egg and nut free to send along with our daughter for school. She didn't really like any of the ones she tried so she ended up creating her own out of a combination of all the cookie recipes she tried. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do. -- posted by Chef Ryoni

Easy Vegetarian/Vegan Black Bean Soup

Hearty, yummy, and healthy! This is a really easy soup to make, it cooks really fast without many steps, and is very rich with black beans. Some fresh cilantro would make a nice replacement to the coriander but I usually don't have it on hand, so I used dry spices for everything but it came out great. I like my soups with a tad of salt, but you can omit the salt if you're watching your sodium intake or lower it/replace with something like SaltSense. It's very pleasant and mild, though you could probably put some Bayou Blast or red cayenne in the spice mixture if you want it hotter. Yields about 2-3 small servings. -- posted by the80srule

Berry Yoghurt Smoothie

I got this recipe from Sarah Owen's book "The Top 100 juices", published by Lifetime Distributers, Castle Hill, Australia.
Sarah Owen says "The super-nutrient vitamin C is needed for more than 300 diferent processes in the body, but it is easily wiped out by smoking, pollution and stress. Found in abundance in berries, vitamin C and other antioxidants help to quash the damaging free radicals that are associated with many illnesses."
The original recipe calls for natural bio yoghurt to be used, but any yoghurt will do.
This makes a large amount of smoothie, and if you're making it just for yourself, I'ld recommend halving it.
I hope you enjoy this healthy - but still tasty - smoothie :) -- posted by TALIA #3

Green Herb Seasoned Salt

I like to use this when I reach for salt, So I lower my intake of salt and kick up the flavor of what I cook.
I used home grown herbs that I dried whole. Leaves that are loosely packed into measuring cups. So if using store bought do take note the amounts of the whole herbs would be a lot less. I guesstimate my 2/3's. Great to season any game, roast beef or roast poultry. Season roast veggies, stuffing, rice or potatoes. How about a touch on your eggs.
I do like heat but I kept it down in this using only peppercorns. You can add chili powder to really make it hot! -- posted by ~Rita~

Chicken 65 Curry

This sticky, spicy chicken curry is deliciously sweet and packs just the right amount of heat. It is to be scooped up with warm, chewy naan, then licked off of fingers.Your first step is to hunt down some curry leaves. Their flavour is irreplaceable in this dish - a bit nutty, warm, and citrusy. Used a lot in South Indian cooking, they have nothing to do with “curry powder” which is a blend of spices.Start by browning the chicken in a heavy skillet - make sure the oil is good and hot and the chicken has been patted dry before you put it in the pan. Don’t flip it until it releases easily - if it is sticking, leave it - it will tear if you try and turn it before it is ready. Next, cook the onions gently over low heat for about 10 minutes to coax out the sweetness. Then add the spices to the pan to saute before the liquid is added. These three steps have a big flavour impact.
As far as curries go, the ingredient list is very short. Which makes it a great curry for beginners, if you can track down some curry leaves at an Indian grocer.
“Where would we be without salt?” – James Beard
I casually sprinkled the thick-cut Hempler’s bacon with cayenne before frying to a nearly blackened crisp. Once the caramel had reached its perfect molten temperature I stirred in a handful of the bacon then reserved the rest to get sprinkled on top. The caramel set beautifully. Some were cut and served as is while a select few were covered in tempered dark chocolate. All of them were devoured.

Christmas Deli Salad With Pomegranate, Parma Ham and Gorgonzola

A fabulous wilted salad boasting the rich, festive colours of vibrant crimson reds and lush holly greens, as well as being full of flavour - this is simply a wonderful salad for the Christmas, New Year or Thanksgiving family table. Please do use any blue cheese or ham of your choice; Stilton or Roquefort would be lovely as well as Prosciutto or Bayonne ham.......and, if you are serving any vegetarians, just leave the ham out of the equation! The dressing can be made up a few hours or a day beforehand, just wilt the leaves and assemble the salad right before serving. Serve this salad with crusty rolls or some thinly sliced rye bread and a glass of chilled Rosé or Chardonnay. -- posted by French Tart

Ming Tsai's Three-Vinegar Syrup

I'm a big fan of Ming Tsai and found this at ming.com. Sounds interesting! He says:

This vinegar reduction, which adds intriguing sweet-tart flavor to dishes, takes advantage of the fact that when balsamic vinegar is cooked down, its inherent sweetness is intensified. Three-Vinegar Syrup combines the complex flavors of balsamic, rice wine, and Chinese black vinegars. It does wonders for beef and seafood, but it can also be used to intensify the taste and aroma of sweet foods including fruit, or as a dessert sauce; I serve it over vanilla ice cream with great success. And because it is syrupy, you can use it decoratively, too, to beautify plates while adding a flavor accent. -- posted by firefly68

Ham Potato Scallop

Was looking for a recipe to use the leftover ham from Christmas and came across this recipe in a really old Sunset Casserole Cookbook. It turned out to be delicious. The only change I made was omitting the bell pepper because I didn't have any on hand and adding a little extra celery instead. You could always try the bell pepper if you'd like! I also sprinkled some extra Cheddar cheese on top. I love that this recipe uses real potatoes, milk, & cheese instead of mixes and soups and its still quick and easy to prepare! -- posted by BrinaBear

Cowgirl Stew

This gluten free, dairy free, vinegar free recipe is one of my favorite to fix for any company and to have around during the work week. It has great, easy to find and healthy ingredients. Made in the crockpot. Can be ready for you to come home to (and smells incredible). Just pay attention to the canned/stewed tomatoes you pick up to make sure they are vinegar free. Also if you are concerned make sure there isn't any high fructose corn syrup in those canned tomatoes also. The more natural the better. This is great even with gluten free cornbread. Also, if you want to use frozen green beans get the steamer bag and steam them for a bit before you put them in the crock pot....they keep their flavor and color very well. -- posted by CookinWorkinMama

Muir Glen Fire Roasted Salsa

This is a recipe that I found on the label of Muir Glen fire roasted tomatoes with green chiles. It's a very simple salsa recipe and doesn't require the addition of a jalapeno pepper, but still has a kick from the chiles in the tomatoes. Cooking time is chilling time. -- posted by LARavenscroft
