Sugar Free Punch

A Sugar Free Punch that a Type 1 diabetic could drink all day long without having to take extra insulin. People with diabetes will just love you for thinking of THEM! Especially any diabetic child like mine. Do you realize a Type 1 diabetic can eat only at certain times of the day and only a certain amount of carbohydrates? Hopefully my daughter will go on the insulin pump this summer so things do not have to be so rigid for her. -- posted by Charlotte J

Persian Tahdeeg (Rice and Potatoes)

This is my daughter Nomi's all-time favorite way to eat rice. My friend Debbie, who is married to a Persian, makes this for her every time we're over at their house for a meal. I figured I was going to have to learn to make this myself, since Nomi just adores this rice and asks for it every time. It's a little complicated, but gets easier each time you make it (says Debbie). Well worth the effort, I'm a big fan of this rice myself, and EVERYONE always fights over the crust! Prep time includes soaking. -- posted by Mirj

Talk about presentation! These gorgeous frozen floral bowls (edible!) are recommended for cold soups, particularly fruit soups.
Applesauce

My late father only knew how to cook two dishes and this was one. The type of apples you use will determine how mushy your apple sauce turns out. Cooking apples will turn into the texture of commercial applesauce while others will keep their shape even after the cooking. Either way it's delicious. The recipe can easily be doubled (or tripled...or quadrupled) to serve a crowd. -- posted by Rachel Savage

Lorraine's Luscious and Lovely Limoncello

My friend Lorraine B gave me this wonderful recipe when I was looking for an interesting hostess gift. One of the best things about this recipe is that it only takes one week to infuse, as opposed to up to a month that I've seen in other recipes. I actually made a quadruple recipe and got 6 bottles to give as gifts (I kept one for myself, of course!). At last night's preliminary tasting (2 hours after bottling) I can tell you that this is a very refreshing tipple!
French Bread With Cheese and Honey (Baked)

Here is an easy one! It has only cheese and honey on French bread but it was called "Milk and Honey Bread" in "It Tastes Too Good To Be Kosher" by Peter Weissenstein. I wanted the name here to reflect the actual ingredients since there is no milk in the recipe! I think Mr. Weissenstein gave the recipe that name since Israel is sometimes called the land of milk and honey but that's only my guess. Hope you like it. -- posted by Oolala

Shalom Bayit Kugel (Potato Kugel)

This is called shalom bayit (peace in the home) kugel, because that is precisely the effect it has on mine when I make it on Friday afternoon. This is a recipe for either 2 large kugels (9"x13" and deep) or 4 small kugels (@8-9" square). It is best straight out of the oven, but can be saved for lunch the next day. To further its shalom bayit potential, I usually make it into four small kugels: one to feed my underfed, stressed out family on Friday afternoon (we always seem to forget real meals while we are preparing for Shabbat), another one for Friday night, another for Shabbat day, and, equally important, the fourth to give to some other family which is either running late, stressed out, just had a baby, or needs a pick-me-up. Never fails to work wonders. The key to this kugel is baking it first at a high temperature for a short time, and then at a lower temp. Wishing your family a peaceful day. -- posted by Sarah Chana

Please pass it along to another harried person. BTW, it is pretty versatile. If you don't have sweet wine, try some not so sweet wine and toss in something sweet (honey? sugar?) (not too much) to give it that nice flavor. You can use red or white wine.
Tarte Tatin -- Easy Version

Classic French apple tart. I make this every fall during apple season, usually end up with the recipe memorized as I'm churning out my 14th, or 15th, tarte by the end of the year. Use tart Granny Smiths for best results. Use store-bought puff pastry to make it super easy! I found this method by trial and error to bypass making caramel first.
(At the suggestion of my friends 2Bleu, a note about traditional tarte tatin: The traditional tarte tatin starts by making caramel in a cast-iron skillet first, then cooks the apples in the caramel on the stovetop, then has you make a crust like a pie crust, which gets placed on top of the apples, then the whole thing is moved into the oven. It's delicious, but a tedious method. So I played around in the kitchen until I discovered this method by a wonderful accident! Don't you love when that happens? ;-) ) -- posted by Susiecat too

Iraqi Apple Preserve

This is a lovely use for apples! From "The Book of Jewish Food" by Claudia Roden. She suggests serving this with yogurt to balance the sweetness. The rosewater flavor is strong here, so if you are shy about rosewater consider cutting the amount in half.
Citron (Etrog) Pomander

The etrog (citron) is a citrus fruit that is used by Jews every year during the holiday of Sukkot (late September, early October, depending on the lunar calendar). It's entire purpose during the week-long holiday is to smell nice. Yes, that's it, we just smell the thing. After the holiday is over you can chop up the etrog and make jam. What I like to do is to stud it with cloves and then use it as the most aromatic besamim for the havdalah service signifying the end of the Sabbath. Aside from the etrog and the cloves, you will need a thin crochet hook to pierce the fruit before sticking in the clove. I use a 0.75 hook, but a 1.00 will work just as well. These babies last for years, and if you already have one or two (or ten or eleven, as is the case in my house), they make lovely gifts. BTW, you can also use a lemon or an orange, the results are the same, just shaped differently. -- posted by Mirj
