Authentic Navajo Indian Fry Bread (Taco Bread)

Step by easy step recipe for a Native American all-purpose flat bread dating back to the nineteenth century. Fry bread is considered a food of inter-tribal unity and is made at all Indian pow wows. It has a crispy outside and a chewy inside. Serve with butter & honey, powdered sugar, or cinnamon & sugar. Or add 'taco' ingredients to the top to make an Indian taco bread salad. You can also fill these with anything then fold them up to eat. Or simply serve plain with soup, stew, etc. *EDITED TO ADD: This is an old recipe and I know many of us no longer use so much salt - if that's the case for you then I suggest REDUCING THE SALT BY HALF. -- posted by 4Susan

Tumbleweed Chowder

Tumbleweed shoots. Native American, contemporary, SW America posted by Jim to a messagboard

"It has a taste similar to split pea soup. No recipe I use is "set in stone" and any
number of combinations can be used. Usually if I have any leftovers in the fridge they get thrown into another recipe. You have
to gather the tumbleweed when it's just coming up about 4" high. Older plants are tough and to my knowledge inedible." -- posted by DR. House

Potato Puff

I have always been "sickly" and had pneumonia quite a bit and had to even be home schooled for a while in 1st grade. I could manage to keep this down because it's pretty light and it made me feel special because she always made it at my request. -- posted by Redneck Epicurean

Three Sisters Harvest Stew

This comes from a great book. Cooking Like a Goddess by Cait Johnson. The "sisters" are corn, squash, and beans. This is a hearty vegetable stew that'll warm you body and soul after a crisp fall day of raking leaves. Pair with crusty bread and apple cider, mmmmm. I've served this with great success at quite a few pot-lucks. -- posted by Kitsune

Fried Bread (I Call It Bannock)

This has taken me 9 years to perfect. First I was given the dry ingredients then for about 4 years I made it one way, then I seen my cousin make hers and knowing she comes from an awesome Fried Bread making family I tinkered with the water until I got the right consistency, that was another 5 years.

This is a nice hearty meal that goes together very quickly. You can see how easy this recipe is to adjust for your family’s “spicy” tolerance. None of these ingredients are ever really "optional" here. I tend to add more garlic and some cayenne if there aren't any kids eating. You can use the seasoned varieties of the beans, tomatoes, or anything else. I love Rotel.
Salmon Cakes

This is a recipe I have modified to my taste that I got from a Native American Cookbook. The cakes can be made in either a muffin tin or you can fry them in a little olive oil or oil of your choice. And you can use your favorite seasoning if you don't like dill. You can also use the milk of your choice. You may also use whole eggs if you prefer. It's also a great way to use leftover fresh salmon. -- posted by Riverside Len

Barona Valley Ranch Fry Bread

The Sage Cafe at Barona Valley Ranch serves this Fry Bread between the hours of 5 and 11 PM. It is OUTSTANDING. Hands down it is the best fry bread I've ever eaten. Top with honey, butter and/or powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar and you'll swear you're eating manna from heaven. We like it so much we asked for the recipe and were quite pleasantly surprised that they freely hand it out! So - here it is, I'm sharing it with you. Enjoy! ETA: You may need to add a tiny bit more water to this, make sure it is hot. Also, don't roll too thin, or they'll fry up crispier than they should. -- posted by Color Guard Mom

Prune Pie

This recipe is more like a giant prune turnover. This is found on many of the pueblos here in NM, and is a great dessert. The crust is more like a cross between a cookie and bread. This recipe is from a small pamphlet called "Sampling New Mexico Foods" printed in 1983, for the E. J. Martinez Elementary School.
This recipe is definitely one for those who like to experiment. Many of the ingredients are approximate, as are the prep and cooking times. It's been years since I made this. I've usually seen it done such that the cinnamon is dusted over the top of the crust, instead of added to the prunes. -- posted by SacredCaramelofLife

Ojibwe Harvest Wild Rice

I was intrigued to learn that wild rice is actually not rice but the seed of a marsh grass. It is expensive because it is beaten manually out of the grass and the harvest season is very short. I made this up with the best ingredients for special occasions. I hope you enjoy it! -- posted by Chef*Lee

Secret Fried Halibut

This is by far the BEST fried halibut I have EVER had! (That really says a lot being from Alaska you know hehe). Simple and delicious with a "secret" ingredient that will knock your socks off! Even my kids like it and they do not like fish at all.
I find the perfect meal with this fish is "sticky rice" and creamed corn, but you decide for yourself! -- posted by momo mom of 2

Southwestern Summertime Quinoa Salad

Wanted a refreshing wholesome side dish to accompany some spicy Mexican meatloaf, and this is what happened. Use a LARGE bowl to mix as it makes quite a significant amount. With the seasoning amounts given, the predominant tastes are the lime, cumin, and cilantro. My family doesn't like spicy things, so there isn't much kick to it, so you could probably double the chili powder, increase the other seasonings, and add some cayenne if you desire. Could also be made with long grain rice if quinoa is unavailable. -- posted by Stylobille24

Southwestern Cornbread Dressing

I created this recipe several years ago because I was unable to find a cornbread dressing everyone liked. It is very simple and satisfies the cornbread lovers, as well as the southwestern taste buds. I make this entire dish in a stainless steel casserole from start to finish. I also use Hatch, New Mexico green chili which I keep in my freezer. Use fresh or canned, but ENJOY! -- posted by Chef Granny Carrie

Delicious Corn Pancakes

My daughter’s teacher called me at 5:00 on a Sunday, and asked if I could make these for their party Tuesday morning. *eyeroll* Of course I said yes.
This is the recipe she gave me. It made approximately 35 cakes.
The batter did not smell delicious, but the cakes are surprisingly tasty with butter and syrup. They would also be good with jam, or wrapped around a piece of sausage.
The kids at school are supposed to eat these plain.
I have a feeling they would rather have had Laura Bush’s Cowboy Cookies! (they are wonderful!) -- posted by mmmagique

Very easy recipe for fried bread used to make Indian Tacos. OR you can eat them with butter, or add honey or jelly! You can also slice in half and use as hamburger buns.
Lemon Verbena and Calendula Vinegar

When steeping herbs in vinegar in the morning, it can be used that evening since it will begin flavoring the vinegar immediately. The longer it stands the more flavor it will have. The flowers and herbs will deteriorate and the flavor will not be as vibrant.

"The annual bed of pot marigolds is filled with plants. These are the true pot marigolds, Shakespeare’s “flowers of Middle Summer”, and by midsummer this spot will appear to be covered with a cloth of gold. I expect them to self-sow, returning every year to gladden our eyes.”
