Fruit Mince

The fruit mince needs to macerate for about 2-3 weeks, although the longer the better. I usually make a few jars around August and then let it sit until December. Traditionally suet would have been used instead of butter.
Crunchy Crust Peach Cobbler

I was looking for peach cobbler recipe that was a bit different and found this one at TOH. Dh ended up making this so that speaks to the ease of the recipe. This would be easy to substitute other fruit for peaches and I personally would increase the fruit filling but it was good as written as well. This makes for a nice cobbler with a crunchy crust with a light meringue flavor. -- posted by Ceezie

Eier Kringel (Raspberry-Filled Cookies)

These heart-shaped German cookies are so delicate and delicious. I got this recipe over 25 years ago and have been making them for holiday gifts every since. They also are a lovely treat on Valentine's Day. I usually make them with the liqueur, which makes them extra-special. The cookie dough does need to be refrigerated for several hours, which is not included in the preparation time, so plan accordingly. Because these cookies are quite fragile and no one wants a broken heart, package them in metal cookie tins lined with large paper doilies. Decorate the tops of the tins with familiar small candy hearts inscribed with romantic messages for a unique Valentine's Day gift. -- posted by JackieOhNo!

Pumpkin Roll

Got this recipe from Greg via a long line of Milwaukee family recipe files. It became our family's version of a tamalera, but being complete gringos, we did this instead of tamales. It turns out best when made one at a time, so we would assign stations and spend the day working an assembly line. Several hours, and a skoshy bit of champagne later, we'd each head home with several rolls to nibble on for many weeks. This freezes well and will hold for several months (if it lasts that long); it also makes a terrific holiday or host gift. -- posted by Hungry Hogareno

Pear-Apple Butter

This tastes like autumn, but is great any time of year. If fresh pears are not in season, you can use canned pear halves packed in light syrup. Just drain four 16-oz. cans, puree in blender or food processor and simmer with remaining ingredients as directed. This spread is delicious on toast or muffins. It will keep up to 1 month in the refrigerator, so it would make a great gift come holiday season. -- posted by JackieOhNo!

Vanilla Shortbread Dipped in Chocolate and Toasted Almonds

My mom got this recipe from a card at the grocery store about 15 years ago and it's become a family favorite! I've tweaked it a little to make it my own. These are great fresh but are out of this world if allowed to "age" for a week to ten days in a container at room temperature. The original recipe called for ground almonds but I toast my own for better flavour. Yield is approximate.
Stef's Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

I love chocolate chip cookies, and have been playing around for years to find what I consider to be the 'perfect recipe.' This is a combination of recipes from a few different sources, I don't consider it original, more stealing the tips I like from different places (alton brown, the ny times, and paula deen, among others). I particularly like it because the butter is melted - it saves your arm the usual pain of mixing softened butter. These make cookies I like - slightly salty, think, chewy, and butterscotch-y.

If anyone finds changes that work well, please let me know, this recipe is always a work in progress to me.

Enjoy!! -- posted by StephanieBamBam

Monastery of the Angels Peanut Brittle

The monastery is located in the Hollywood Community of Los Angeles at 1977 Carmen Avenue, where the nuns prepare candy and other food products to sell, with the proceeds going to charity. One can visit the monastary by doing a google search to find the hours when they are open to the public. Their heavenly candies are exceptional, which is no surprise because candy making was taught to the nuns by the former owners of Juliet's Candy Shop in Pasadena. When the shop was closed, the couple donated their equipment and recipe collection to the monastery.
The nuns make their peanut brittle only once a year, around Christmas time. This recipe has been published in the Los Angeles Times many times, usually around Christmas. Some cooking notes and comments which were provided to the Times by the sisters; raw peanuts are the key to making their brittle. Cooking the peanuts in the syrup gives the candy it's outstanding flavor. The nuns have also stated that this recipe which they have provided to the Times comes as close as any one can come to in duplicating their recipe in a home kitchen. Because the nuns use commercial ingredients and equipment, the end product will not be exactly the same. Note, all recipes which are published in the Los Angeles Times are first tested in the Times test kitchen, (where residential cooking equipment and techniques are used) before the recipe is published in the newspaper. In preparing this recipe, the nuns advise having two cooks available for the pouring and spreading of the hot liquid candy, it makes this step a lot easier. -- posted by lynnski / LA

Shortbread Cookies

traditional cookie from Scotland. Simple to make but delicious. The secret to the crispness of this cookie recipe is rice flour which we always used in Scotland but I have never seen in a printed recipe. (My supermarket stocks rice flour in the Hispanic food section). Traditionally eaten with tea or at New Year with a wee dram. -- posted by Chef #1476903

Aunt Georgia's Gumdrop Cake

There are 15 other Gumdrop Cake recipes on Zaar as of today, but not this winner from my Aunt Georgia. She used to make this for my favorite uncle and his brother, my dad. This was BY FAR my dad's all time favorite cake! Not diet friendly, but really delicious and fun for a once-in-awhile treat. You can replace some ingredients with better choices and clean up the calories and fat quite a bit (but I don't!). This makes two loaves or one large bundt cake, or you can make mini loaves which are wonderful as gifts. Great for holiday time, a little spicy and lots of color. Enjoy! -- posted by Messy44

Banging Banana Bread

I LOVE banana bread. So, I have made it for many years. I am always looking to get the flavor just perfect! I use "old" bananas. The upscale produce shop won't sell them, so I usually call and see if they have any. That way I can use them right away AND they sell them to me super cheap! I usually bake around 150 mini loaves to include in my Christmas Goodies Bags. I like my recipes to have measurements for items, sizes for pans, and baking directions. So you will find all of that in this recipe that I have finally decided I have "tweeked" it right down to d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. -- posted by Tantric1

Best Rum Balls (America's Test Kitchen)

This recipe is from Christoper Kimball of Cook's Illustrated and America's Test Kitchen. It makes about five dozen rum balls that are intense, fudgy, chewy, complex, and balanced. Recipe can be halved or doubled. Plan ahead, since these are best when left to mellow for at least a few days in the refrigerator. They keep very well and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a couple of weeks or frozen for up to a few months. Cooking time is refrigeration time. Use vanilla for a non-alcoholic version (sometimes called moon balls). -- posted by blucoat

Cornmeal-Oatmeal Cranberry-Orange Loaf

My husband, being a true Texan, loves cornbread almost as much as he loves me. I was not a great cornbread baker, so I bought The Cornbread Gospels by Crescent Dragonwagon to learn how to make his tummy happy, and what a great book that turned out to be. Every form and fashion of cornbread you can imagine, and (almost) all good. This recipe is from that book, and has earned rave reviews everywhere I have taken it. It's beautiful, and the essences of orange and cranberry combined with the crunchiness of stone ground cornmeal sets it apart from other quick breads, and it will leaving you wanting more. I hope you like it as well as we do. -- posted by Feisty

Best Glazed Butter Cookies (America's Test Kitchen)

The geniuses at America's Test Kitchen have created tender, crispy cookies that roll out easily. Cream cheese—a surprise ingredient—gives the cookies flavor and richness without altering their texture. For a dough that's incredibly easy to handle, this recipe uses the "reverse" creaming method: incorporate slightly softened—not melted—butter into the flour and sugar (rather than first creaming the butter and sugar).
If desired, the cookies can be finished with sprinkles or other decorations immediately after glazing.

Incredible Gluten Free Butter Cookies

These cookies are so delectable it's hard to believe they are gluten free ;-)
Shortbread-like and not overly sweet, they keep very well and make a perfect holiday gift! The recipe is a result of experimenting with all kinds of cookie recipes, combining things I liked and then patiently changing the resulting recipe slightly, time after time until it met my expectations. I hope it will meet yours as well :-) The dough is easy to roll out for cutting and also suitable for using a cookie press. I often freeze them raw in large amounts to bake later, but even without freezing these cookies hardly spread.
If you need to avoid lactose, you can replace the butter with 4/5 dairy free margarine and 1/5 Ghee so as to have the buttery taste without the lactose. -- posted by Suzy mom to 2

1200 Watt Microwave Peanut Brittle

Bravo to Love2Eat’s Peanut Brittle in a Jiffy #58383 - it got me started, but with the adjustments for my higher powered microwave and some flavor changes I thought I should write my own recipe. I can not say how much Love2Eat’s note about having everything measured out and ready to go was a life saver. I use an 8 cup pyrex measuring bowl with a handle as this mixture bubbles up and gets very hot (bowl gets very hot too) - it is MOLTEN SUGAR- if your work area is not right next to your sink - have a bowl of ice water in case of burns. THIS RECIPE IS FOR A 1200 WATT MICROWAVE. Oh yeah, I sorta faked it on how many this will serve - it is habit forming. -- posted by Sandy in Dayton

Brandied Peach Cake I - Lower Fat and Calories but Not in Taste

Based on the prize-winning Brandied Peach Cake recipe. I'm sure some Southern grandmother is rolling over in her grave because of my modifications, but for those of us who can't do a slice of cake with 35 grams of fat and 600 calories, this one may be a more appealing compromise, without losing the moistness (thanks to applesauce) and peach flavor. My son and I made this in 4 mini loaf pans to give as holiday gifts. Grandpa loved it! -- posted by supercrafty

Traditional Potted Spiced Ham for Tea Time by Mrs Beeton

An old-fashioned treat, this is a fabulous way to use up left over ham, although I have also put some freshly cooked ham aside especially for this when I have baked a ham for Christmas, Easter or another special occasion. The ham is finely minced and mixed through with old-fashioned spices and butter, and it keeps for several weeks in a cool place. Another name for this recipe is Potted Meat, and it was VERY popular in Victorian times, although recipes for potted meats (preserved under butter) goes back even further than that historically. Wonderful in sandwiches for the teatime table or for picnics, lunch boxes and festive buffets. This is an adapted recipe from Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management, where she suggests that this is a nice addition for the “Breakfast or Luncheon table”. Serve with sliced breads of all types, oatcakes, toast, bread rolls, and crackers or with salad, chutneys, mustard and pickles. NB: Use a good cooked ham on the bone for this recipe: the sort carved by hand at the deli and old-fashioned butchers. So called "cooking time" is chill time. -- posted by French Tart

Foam Biscuits (Cookies) by Brianne's Nanna

Many many years ago my daughter brought home a recipe that was shared at her kindergarten class by a little girl called Brianne for her nanna's biscuits.
The note at the bottom of the recipe made it worth keeping all this time & although I have not made this yet I thought that someone may remember them from their childhood.
The note reads:
"This makes lots & lots of biscuits.
My nanna had 5 children during the war and she used it lots so she could feed the children.
She never bought biscuits all her life. Nanna always made these for all her grandchildren's birthday parties and they are my favourite biscuits.

Pain D’Épices - Spiced French Gingerbread Loaf With Honey

A French classic and one that I will me making myself from now on, having just paid a small fortune for a tiny, if delicious loaf from my local boulangerie! This is a cross between sticky ginger parkin and a gingerbread cake or a tea loaf. It is not as moist as parkin or gingerbread, but it is extremely good when spread with butter or even better, when toasted.......divine! It is also surprisingly good when served with cheese. Another idea that I discovered in a local café, is to serve it warm with a dollop of crème fraiche and a little bunch of fresh berries on top, a perfect dessert for an elegant dinner party! This improves with keeping and makes a wonderful gift for a foodie friend or hostess – wrap in cellophane and attach a ribbon with serving suggestions. If you cannot source Quatre Épices, I have a recipe on zaar to make it at home!
