Popovers

This recipe is based on the one from King Arthur Flour. Their version specified whole milk and unsalted butter, but I have used regular salted butter and lactose-free milk (1% or 2%) and they are delicious. -- posted by Lille

Biscuit Mini-Batch for Toaster Oven

A nice, little batch of fresh, hot, biscuits to make in the toaster oven when you just need a little something. Drop biscuits are no more trouble to make than opening a can of dough and you don't have to keep track of expiration dates. Of course you could roll them and cut them if you wanted, but I've always liked the crunchy bits you get from the texture of the drop biscuits. -- posted by 3KillerBs

Stuffed Biscuits

Ok, I found this recipe on recipezaar and totally lost it. I forgot to save it in my cookbook and the page that I printed, got lost too. I couldn't find it again on recipezaar, since I didn't know the name of it so I had to re-create this recipe, since my family kept asking for it. I guess my version of it might be completely different than original, but it still a very yummy dish!
I also thought it would be good to make in the mini muffin pan as an appetizer, I'll try that next! -- posted by AngelaSept

Gingerbread Men

These are seriously cute and addictive! I make these all the time (and sneak bits of the extra stuff!)and give them as gifts especially for easter and Christmas. Great to make with kids as well as they'll have a ball decorating them...I know i do! You don't have to use the chocolate icing, I just find that the flavour matches well with the cookie and provides a great base to stick the decorations too as it sets well. The number of men it makes is just a guess and will vary with different sized cookie cutters. -- posted by Hayley_11

Pan Dulce - Mexican Sweet Bread

You cannot have one of these unless you have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and a good friend sitting at your kitchen table with you talking about the lastest "chisme". I remember going to the local panaderia with my Nana and picking up some pan dulce if she knew she had company coming. I would sit at her plastic covered table cloth and not have to worry about any drips as I dipped my bread into the cafe con leche and listened as the conversations flowed around me. I wish I had had this recipe back then and I would have made it for her. This recipe is different from others in that you can make it the night before and then stick it in the oven in the morning and serve it to those you love! -- posted by cookiedog

Dallaspulla - Awesome Finnish Pastry

I discovered these pastries as an exchange student in Finland and they are my absolute favorite in the whole wide world (my boyfriend's too). I have been searching high and low for a recipe and finally I found this one on Axis of Aevil so I thought I'd share. Can't wait to try it!!

There's the traditional Finnish filling as well as an American alternative since quark is pretty hard to find in the States.

NOTE: The vanilla cream flour can be replaced by mixing together 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar and 1/4 cup potato or wheat flour -- posted by mdmdt

Scottish Baps - Soft Morning Bread Rolls

These classic Scottish bread rolls are so easy to make - with only one kneading required. They are soft with a distinctive floured finish and are excellent for all manner of fillings, but especially bacon or cheese and salad. These baps are quite wide without much height, and they must only be baked for a maximum of 10 minutes in order to maintain their soft texture. Preparation time includes the proving and kneading time. They are best eaten on the day that they are made - they are delicious toasted the next day however. -- posted by French Tart

These should be illegal they are so darn delicious! --- for 16 rolls I suggest to use only a tube pan and do not use one with a removable middle, you could use a bundt pan but you will need to reduce the amount of yeast rolls to about 12 or they will rise over your bundt pan --- make certain to generously grease your pan, I use my recipe#78579 nothing will stick with this! --- start this the night before there is an overnight rising time -- do not use instant pudding for this :) -- posted by KITTENCAL

New England Style Buttermilk Hot Dog Bun's (Lobster Rolls)

After a great deal of searching for this style of roll for the 2008 4th of July Holiday, I fiddled with the recipe and came up with a much better version. I hope that you enjoy these as much as we do. They are great rolls! Rich in eggs and butter, this dough is soft and tender and does not require excessive kneading. It is easy to make by hand and even easier if you have an electric mixer with a dough hook. Please note that when I make these rolls I use the 'dough setting' on my bread maker to mix the ingredients and get through the first rise. Please follow your bread makers instructions for adding ingredients if you choose to use your bread maker, as well. The times listed reflect making the buns manually. -- posted by Humble Bee

Onion Buns

I was looking to put a spin on my Recipe #317538 and I came across this fabulous recipe. It was easy and the aroma filled the house while making the dough and while baking the buns. From KA: Why bake your own sandwich buns? Because homemade is SO much better than store-bought. These soft, golden buns feature a subtle spiral of dried onion, giving them incredible aroma and marvelous flavor. They freeze well, and make excellent toast.
Cinnamon Pecan Rolls , Burrito Style

I wanted cinnamon rolls, but I didn't want to go to all the trouble of making the traditional ones.So I took a can of Pillsbury "Butter Tastin" Grands some pecans and came up with these. If you want to make smaller rolls just cut the biscuits in half, and adjust the amount of margarine used on each cirle of dough. The amounts of the ingredients in the recipe is what I liked to use, but the amounts can be changed to suit your own tastes. If desired you top with a glaze. My niece DarksLight ( who is a member here) helped me come up with the name.Submitted to "ZAAR" on October 2nd,2008 -- posted by Chef shapeweaver ©

Danska Wienerbröd - Danish Pastry

Danish pastry is a sweet pastry which has become a speciality of Denmark and is popular throughout much of the world. The danish as consumed in Denmark can be topped with chocolate, sugar or icing, and may be stuffed with either jam, marzipan or custard. Shapes are numerous, including circles with filling in the middle (known as "spandauers"), figure-eights, spirals, and the pretzel-like kringles.
This makes a first-rate country French bread in your ABM. My family loves it so much I can't make it fast enough! Makes a 2 lb. loaf. This is also an excellent dough to make by hand. Simply let it raise a couple of times, punch it down in between and bake it off in a 400 degree oven for approximately 30-40 minutes (I don't remember exactly how long). Bread should sound hollow (when tapped) when done. -- posted by UnknownChef86

If your biscuit-challenged then try this I think you will be pleased with the results! for garlic-lovers add in 1/2 to 1 teaspoon garlic powder you can also add in dried herbs --- make sure that the buttermilk is very cold when adding in the melted butter this will form small clumps of semi hardened butter that is needed for the success of these biscuits I have suggested in the instructions to put the buttermilk in the freezer--- in place of buttermilk mix 1-1/2 tablespoons white vinegar with milk to equal 1 cup then allow to sit for 10 minutes mixing often --- these are best served still warm :) -- posted by KITTENCAL

These are so delicious, savory and moist. They are definitely a convenience, because you use Bisquik. However, they don't taste like you used an instant mix. They are perfect as a dinner roll and they are just as delicious and moist when you heat up any leftover muffins. They complement any meat or fish. I always end up giving this recipe out whenever I make them and people can't get over how easy they are. Cheesy, Dilly, Oniony, Savory.....MMMMMMMM! NOTE: I have used skim milk and dried minced onion in place of fresh before and they honestly come out just as delicious! Perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner!
Our Daily Bread in a Crock - Weekly Make and Bake Rustic Bread

Make up a large batch of rustic artisanal bread dough, store it and then bake a loaf each day you need fresh bread, amazing but true! This is a hodge podge of old fashioned English and French rustic bread recipes; the bread dough is made up ahead of time and stored (in the old days) in an earthenware crock or bowl, with a lid. You tear a piece of the dough off as and when you want to bake a loaf of bread. Easy! I use this style of bread dough regularly in the B and B, so I can always have fresh bread or bread rolls on hand for breakfast. You can add other types of flour to the basic white batch, as long as the ratio remains the same - you can mix rye or wholewheat flour with the white, or add herbs, onions, seeds, fruit and other flavourings. The dough can be used as soon as the initial proving has finished, but it will keep in a cool place or a fridge for a week or two - I do not recommend longer than 2 weeks however. The dough can be used for free form bread loaves, in bread tins, as rolls or other shapes. I have kept this technique and recipe to myself for a while, but I have decided to share it on Zaar now, mainly as my daughter keeps asking for the basic dough recipe! I notice that this type of long-term or long-life bread dough has made a revival in a new book called “Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day”; this recipe however, is a very old technique and method, dough was always made up for the week and then kept in the cold room or pantry for daily baking. My grandmother who lived in a 600 year old cottage in Northern England, used to have a stone slab in the Pantry where she kept her crock and dough, I remember sticking my finger in it!! This amount makes about 4 to 5 loaves of bread, depending on the weight and shape of the bread that you bake. -- posted by French Tart

Jelly Jar Biscuits

These biscuits are our new favorite! They are very light and flaky! It's actually a delightful mistake I made on my everyday biscuits that was a serendipitous treat. Crunchy on the outside and tender in the middle. This makes six nice sized biscuits when cut with a jelly jar. Serve with biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, or beef stew. Make sure your oven is really heated for a longer length of time than usual. I use a pizza stone in my oven all the time to ensure even and constant heat. It really helps baked goods along the road to perfection. PLEASE NOTE - You can use a lot more milk in this recipe if needed. Just add until you get a soft biscuit consistency. I have used anywhere from 1/4 cup to 2/3 cup depending on the humidity and flour. -- posted by Secret Agent

Crescent Roll-Up Sandwiches

This is a very easy recipe that I got from a neighbor--makes a great lunch with some soup or a salad! I think she said that she got the recipe from Pillsbury... which makes sense as this is a great way to use crescent rolls! I have made these as ham and swiss, turkey and swiss, roast beef and cheddar. There are so many options! Note: You can make these more of a meal sandwich (for the guys) if you use the large crescet rolls and double the meat and cheese for each sandwich. (So 12 slices of meat with 6 slices of cheese.) -- posted by Dwynnie

This is my Mom's recipe. It is so good, very light and fluffy with a crispy crust on the bottom. Very simple too. Can be used to make rolls, or loaves. You can easily double it. You can also add 1c. raisins and/or slivered almonds,orange/lemon zest and vanilla extract to a loaf for a festive holiday bread. I created this yummy version for those of us who need a smaller "loaf". It's the perfect size for 2 adults and 1 or 2 kids. I make mine in a small heart shaped springform pan.
Fastest Cinnamon Buns / Rolls

These are delicious, super fast, tender and moist (thanks to buttermilk & cottage cheese) rolls with no yeast (or rising time) required. The dough is very easy to work with and they are good with or without the glaze. Recipe was created by Kathy Farrell-Kingsley for last-minute orders at her Connecticut bakery, "Great Cakes" and was printed in "Fine Cooking Magazine" (Issue 88).
VARIATION: Apple-Butter Cinnamon Buns: For filling, mix 3/4 cup apple butter, 1-1/2 Tbs. melted butter, and 1 tsp. ground cinnamon in a small bowl. Omit the melted butter from the main recipe and spread the dough rectangle with the apple mixture, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle with 3/4 cup (3 oz.) finely chopped walnuts, if desired. Roll, cut, bake, and ice as directed. Because this filling is wetter, the buns may need to bake for 30 minutes. -- posted by blucoat

Scottish Cheddar Cheese and Spring Onion Tea-Time Scones

Another one of my Scottish grandmother's recipes! I have several cheese scone recipes posted on Zaar, but this one is one of my favourites. Spring onions are also called green onions or scallions. My mum still makes these regularly and serves them filled with cream cheese (Boursin is great!) and cooked ham, a tea-time scone sandwich! Try to use a mature Scottish cheddar - my favourite comes from the Isle of Mull, but any mature farmhouse cheddar cheese will work. Another idea is to make mini versions of these scones for delightful appetisers, spread them with a filling of your choice - very welcome with a chilled wine or sherry! -- posted by French Tart

Easier Than the Easiest Chocolate Croissants

Perfect Butter Croissants

I had to track down this recipe when Mark Bittman called it "the best croissant recipe ever". It's from Paula Peck's classic cookbook, "The Art of Fine Baking". This recipe takes a long time but it's worth it! You can freeze the shaped croissants and bake from frozen for 12-14 minutes at the 400°F. These continue baking after you remove them from the oven so if you try to eat one immediately it will seem too doughy—wait for the carry-over time before eating. -- posted by blucoat

Easy-To-Make Sticky Rolls

Everyone will think that you spent hours making these delicious sticky rolls. Make them for brunch, dinner parties, around the holidays, anytime! They are great served with a cup of coffee in the morning, or just as a breakfast treat. You can certainly substitute chopped pecans for the walnuts, if you prefer. And, you can make your own bread dough if you don't want to use the prepackaged dough (but, why?). Even add a little allspice or nutmeg to the recipe as well as the cinnamon. The honey, nuts, and brown sugar give these rolls a wonderful healthy, wholesome flavor. Enjoy! :) Prep time does not include time for rolls to rise. -- posted by Alan in SW Florida

I threw this together for quick breakfast one morning using what I had on hand- lots of bananas. It is a basic biscuit recipe with a banana twist. Be sure to mix using a light hand. Top with butter, jam, coconut oil, or your favorite other topping. You can use all milk or buttermilk in place of milk and yogurt. I was just using up the last of my plain yogurt. -- posted by Cooking4TenOfUs

Cinnamon-Swirl Pumpkin Rolls

This recipe is from King Arthur Flour and is a delicious fall twist on cinnamon buns. And, they are somewhat healthier because they contain some whole wheat flour (and a vegetable!). The dough is very easy to handle and rises up beautifully. These would also be good with a cream cheese icing.
Dough requires a total of at least 2 1/2 hour rising time (if you use liquid milk instead of dry, you may require slightly longer rising time). You can make the dough the day before. Just let them rise for about 30 minutes, wrap them up, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, let them rise a bit more and warm up, unwrap and then bake. -- posted by blucoat

Bed and Breakfast Spiced Pumpkin Scones With Honey Butter

Gorgeous spiced pumpkin scones with honey butter - what a treat for the tea-time table during autumn and winter. I have made these twice now and love the combination of the honey butter with the scones, although they are also delicious with plain unsalted butter. This recipe came from an Australian "Olive" magazine that was sent to me, apparently, Queensland is famous for its blue pumpkins where this recipe originates from - I added the spices as well as the honey butter! A wonderful recipe for the cooler months, but as it uses tinned or frozen pumpkin, these can be made all year around. If you don't want to serve these with the honey butter, just split them whilst warm and spread with normal butter or cream. Mixed spice is a British spice mixture, I have a recipe for this on RZ: Recipe #266688 -- posted by French Tart

Cinnamon Rolls With a Cream Cheese Dough (Saveur)

This recipe for cinnamon rolls calls for folding the cream cheese into the layers of dough which makes for very rich and moist rolls. This dough may be prepared a day in advance and left to rise in the refrigerator overnight. You can play with the filling - omit the nuts and/or raisins, it's still great. This recipe was published in Saveur Magazine.
