Mosquito Bite Relief

I don't remember which magazine I read this in (I was at the doctor's office) but we just tried it. The mosquitoes are swarming right now and my kids had tons of bites. They were in total desperation with the itching. I put a little on each bug bite, and they got relief almost instantly! Very easy. -- posted by WI Cheesehead

Gluten-Free "better Than Rice Krispies" Treats

I had to modify the original recipe to make it gluten free. Make sure all ingredients are gluten-free - especially the butterscotch bits. Nestle's Butterscotch bits have barley protein in them.

Lemon Buttermilk Pudding Cake

Adapted from a recipe from Bon Appétit, January 2005. This is one of those cakes that separate upon baking, creating an airy cake layer on top and a yummy, lemony sauce to spoon out from the bottom. My major change was to add grated lemon zest for more of that delicious lemon flavour. Serve with berries if in season. -- posted by evelyn/athens

Baked French Toast - Plain and Simple

There certainly is no lack of french toast recipes here on 'Zaar. Lots of variety, and no doubt very delicious. This however is how our family likes it. Lower in fat, with no sweetener added. After all, don't most serve with butter and syrup? This makes a 9 x 13 pan, enough for serving the multitudes. Easily halved and quartered. Just remember to adjust the cooking time and the size of the baking dish. -- posted by Diana #2

Beer-Battered Onion Rings

You probably don't want to know you can make better-than-restaurant quality onion rings in your own kitchen, but these are the best onion rings I've ever had. The recipe is from Cook's Country June/July 2009 from America's Test Kitchens. Make sure you don't soak the onion rounds longer than 2 hours or they will turn soft and become too saturated to crisp properly. Cider vinegar may be used in place of malt vinegar. Use a candy thermometer to make sure the oil gets to 350 degrees. According to Cook's Country, ordinary yellow onions will produce acceptable rings but sweet onions are preferred. The beer soaking with vinegar and salt softens and flavors the raw onion. If the batter is too thick, the rings will be doughy. Too thin, and it will run off. Add the beer gradually until the batter falls from the whisk to form a ribbon trail. Fry the battered onion rings in small batches and transfer them one at a time to the hot oil so they don't stick together. -- posted by AmyZoe

What a delicious side dish to have with your grilled steak! I love cooking mushrooms when I am grilling. I can just put them on and pretty much forget about them. They don't really overcook, unless you burn them! Take your time with them if you want to. You can also cook them at a higher heat, but you really have to make sure you don't burn the garlic. Enjoy! -- posted by Nif

Shredded Wheat Cookies

This is how I get rid of our extra plain, boring shredded wheat that no one really wants to eat. They are crunchy, but still soft. To my taste buds, they fashion a taste somewhere in between peanut butter cookies and oatmeal cookies, but with a crunchy aspect to them, paired with a hint of chocolatey goodness. The baking time is for a couple batches, but it will vary depending on how big your oven and/or baking sheets are. -- posted by zoegirl21

Braised Artichokes With Pecorino (Carciofi Al Tegame)

This is a very tasty way to eat young artichokes! Thin sliced, slowly braised in a skillet in their own juices and served with a shower of soft pecoriono. This method is simple, and will yield delicious results even with larger, more mature artichokes. This makes a wonderful vegetarian sandwich or for the carnivore, a topping for a juicy hamburger. Artichokes prepared this way are also a great appetizer topped with a poached egg. Lidia Bastianich from Lidia's Italy.
Sparkling Fireplace Glass

We have a fireplace with glass doors. "How beautiful!" we thought when we bought the place. It didn't take long to figure out it was a curse rather than a blessing. They fog over with only one fire and within a week can be black and opaque. We tried many different techniques and even resorted to scraping it with a razor blade at times.
I think I read this tip in a book full of similar tips. I didn't really believe that it would work but was pleasantly surprised! Cleanup has gone from a several hour affair to about 15 minutes.

You can disregard the amounts... the recipe was rejected for lack of quantities originally so I had to add them to get it accepted. -- posted by Chef Tweaker

Mary Eldred's Easy Blueberry Chese Cake Recipe

This is a no fuss cheese cake, no spring-form pan, no water bath. Easy and pretty quick. You do need to make in in advance so it has time to chill completely. This will make a fairly thin layer of cheese cake and blueberry. You can double the recipe (not the crust part) and bake for 40 minutes OR you can bake this in a 8 or 9 inch square pan (don't double pie filling) and cook for I don't know how long - like 30 minutes. The brown spots on top tell you when it is done. Prep and cook times do not include chill times. -- posted by traveler

It was noted on the recipe, by whomever developed it that if you thick slice bread and toast with butter, it is even yummier.
My hubby has a Coolata addiction. Seriously. So in an effort to not spend $4 a day on coffee, I scoured the internet and found a recipe, after tweaking to meet his desires, I think I found a winner. I make 1 batch every other day, So this amount will make approx 2 Coolatas. I use my Magic Bullet to make but I am sure you can in a blender. -- posted by Stepford Mom

Keri's Baked Beans (The World's Best!)

I was trying to find a good baked bean recipe to bring over to a friends house for a party. I love barbecue, and I frequent a website called The Smoke Ring. The members on the site kept saying over and over again that Keri's Baked Beans were the best, so I decided to give them a try. Let me tell you, they are the BEST. Don't let the apple pie filling scare you...

A big thank you goes to Keri for developing this recipe.

My meat-eating husband said, "In some ways I like these better than real sausage." They definitely wouldn't fool anybody, but they will satisfy any craving you may have for breakfast sausage without harming pigs or raising your cholesterol, and they taste MUCH, MUCH better than any vegetarian sausages you can buy in the freezer of your health food store.
Amber's Dressing

An old secret recipe that can be used for anything! dressings for salads and slaws, or sauces for burgers! Marinate some chicken or pork in it for a nice tangy treat!

If using as a marinade for chicken, I find it helps to use more EVOO than normal, it helps keep the chicken moist.

This dressing will hold in the fridge for 1-2 weeks, but is best when used within 24hrs. -- posted by Chef #1315343
