I am in 7th heaven right now. I read this recipe and had to have one right now. It is about 2:30 a.m. and I am lovin it. Thanks for posting this. I would never have thought a tomato sandwich would be this good. I made no substitutions. Great as is.

On hot summer days when the tomatoes are at the peak of perfection nothing beats a tomato sandwich. My first taste of this was at a friend's house and she always bought Dukes mayonnaise so every summer I get a small jar of Dukes just for this. They are best when eaten while still wet from the lake or pool For the Vegans, I knew someone who ate these with mustard and loved every bite just as much. I also sometimes put a thin slice of vadalia onion on this if in season and when out of mayo butter is good too. I don't miss the heat but I do miss summer's bounty.

I am a vegan and I am totally obsessed with plain toasted tomato and avocado sandwiches (vegan mayonnaise is rotten and I have no idea what miracle whip is!)

You must not be suthun. You never waste the time to toast that bread, but just slather mayo on good ol' boring white bread; cut a few thick slices of vine ripened STILL WARM TOMATO, add salt and pepper and there you go. Just make sure you have napkins for all that wonderful juice flowing down your arm.

This is an AWESOME way of enjoying Garden Tomatoes. I grew up eating these very sandwiches as a child. Thanks for posting this recipe and letting others in on a wonderful "Summer Sandwich". Marla

This is one of my favorite sandwichs! My grandma is the one who first told me about it. I do 2 things different however, I toast the bread and put a slice of american cheese.

Oh yeah baby - just had these for lunch today - in fact we had 2 each - the first was your regular red but the second was a yellow tomato. After so much gourmet endeavors at meal times, this simple forgotten sandwich with fresh homegrown out of the garden tomatoes was out of this world.

This is one of my favorite sandwiches and the Miracle Whip adds just the right touch. I sometimes add some baby greens also. Wonderful on toast.

I loath mayonnaise but make my tomato sandwich with yellow mustard. I have several mayonnaise detesting friends that use mustard as a substitute.

My Mom made this while we were growing up, and when I'm sick, I still crave it along with a cup of tea. Fresh, ripe tomatoes, mayonnaise, and the most refined white bread you can find come together wonderfully (though I always added a grind of pepper). Some might prefer wheat breads, but cheap, soft white breads don't compete with the tomato. Thanks so much for posting this, Ann Louise!
