6 Reviews of Sara Lee Crumb Cake - Copycat

From: 4Susan

On Jan 11, 2006

Revising my first review - I believe it didn't turn out then because the baking powder was left out (I must be blind not to have seen it, lol). Made it again and this time I give it a solid 4 stars (posted 5 in order to help make up for my previous 1 star review). I used butter flavored shortening & 3t of water in place of the margarine but otherwise kept to the recipe, including sifting the flour and sprinkling with powdered sugar. Baking time ended up being 55 minutes. I've never tried Sara Lee but this was a good basic breakfast cake, very sweet.

This cake is very yummy! A GREAT crumb cake! Plus, its very easy to make. Would like to add that the baking time on this recipe should be a little bit longer! That's about all.. thank you for a great recipe.

We really enjoyed this coffeecake. I have never tried a Sara Lee coffeecake so I don't know if it tastes like one or not, but no matter, this one is great even without being a copycat. I did end up baking for close an hour as the middle was not quite done at 40 minutes otherwise I made as posted. Thanks for posting!!!

I followed the directions exactly. After baking the 40 minutes I took it out of the oven and let it rest on the counter to cool. I cut into it and the center was not quite done. I put it back in the oven for 15 more minutes. This time it was completely done. We ate it for dessert tonight and everyone including a neighbor said it was great.

This was easy to mix up and resulted in a nice homey flavor, but I had some trouble cooking the center of the cake through (it sunk a tad in middle the size of a half dollar). My cake had a denser crumb than I expected and I suspect I may have baked it a bit too long. Thanks for posting. I love copycat recipes! Roxygirl

WoW, This was very good! I used cake flour though for the initial 2cups and it made the cake moist and fluffy. Easy to make and I had all the ingredients on hand. YUMMY
