Last night before I went to bed I found this recipe. I was thrilled to see it, since I had already put some dry beans in to soak overnight...and was surprised to see this recipe that I didn't even have to search for. I had never put garlic or cloves in my beans before...so this was very new to me. When I came home today and smelled the garlic I was afraid that the amount of it in the recipe was going to be too much for me...since I like garlic best in small doses. Boy was I wrong...this recipe is great!!! The combination of flavors really complimented the beans and the ham. I barely had a small mixing bowl of leftovers...usually I have so much left over that I end up having to throw some of it out before it all gets eaten. I also baked corn muffins with it as suggested.

This is the perfect solution to leftover ham. We actually look forward to ham and beans more than we do the actual ham dinner! This makes a great Sunday after church meal. I clean and soak the beans the night before. I also chop all of the veggies the night before and make sure the ham is trimmed and diced the way we like it or just leave it on the bone depending on what I have for leftover ham. I put all the ham, veggies and spices in a ziplock bag in the fridge. First thing in the morning I drain and rinse beans and add all the ingredients to the pot. I turn the temp to high at 7am. When we get home from church at 1pm I stir the beans and turn the heat off. I serve each bowl with a splash of cider vinegar. It really livens up the flavor. It's a keeper!-HK

I wasn't sure I liked this the first day, but the second and third, it was DELICIOUS. My kids even liked it. The cloves gave it an unusual flavor that I really liked.

I've never made ham & beans before, but I've always wanted to try (always relied on Grandma to make it for me and always afraid mine would never be as good). This recipe was wonderful! Easy to follow..cooking time was right on the money. I've never used cloves before and wasn't sure if I'd like it, so I only used 1/8 tsp and it seemed perfect for me. I also used chicken broth instead of water and loved the extra flavor. Thanks for sharing - I'll definitely be making this again!

This is real good comfort food. I didn't have ground cloves so I used liquid smoke (about a teaspoon). I soaked my beans overnight then I added the chicken stock but only 4 cups. I was going to add more but it was perfect. I used sliced spiral since I thought ham hocks wouldn't give off much meat for dinner. It was perfect and will be a great lunch for DH. Thanks for a staple in our kitchen!!

So simple, yet so good! I increased the amount of ham to around 2 1/2 - 3 pounds boneless, keeping everything else about the same, except for a rounded 1/4 teaspoon of the cloves, and I threw in a bay leaf. I put this together and into the crockpot just before we went to bed, letting it cook on low all night. I needed to drop off a meal at church for a family by 11:00AM, so this was perfect. I transferred the ham and beans with very little liquid into a foil container for reheatability; cornbread and fresh green beans in separate containers, and it was a great 'take-out' dinner. There was enough for my husband & me each to have two generous bowls of it after what I packed up. Easy and satisfying. Thanks, Sue!

My husband rated this as 4.5. I usually don't like ham and beans, but I thought this was really good! This is my first time to make ham and beans and the first time to use my crock pot. It was so easy to make and was really delicious. I halved the recipe and it still made 4 servings. I used a ham hock for flavor, but also cut up a slice of ham so there would be meat to eat with the beans. I used chicken broth for the liquid. Thanks for such an easy, great recipe! Update: I've made this several times now and have omitted the salt...always seemed pretty salt and tastes just fine without it!

These are the best beans I have ever had. I did my bean on the stove top. Soaked my beans over night, Drained and rinsed. left in the strainer while I added my onions and pepper to the pot, with a couple Tbsp olive oil. Sweated the onions on high, while I readied my garlic 5 cloves (left whole). Added garlic. Omitted the salt because I knew I was using ham and chicken stock. Added my beans back to the pot (this being about 9 am) then added 4 cups of water and 2 cups chicken stock. I also omitted the cloves. Added 1 Roma Tom, cut in half, and one small potato pealed, cut in half. (The tom and the potato are an old wives tale about helping with the gas...Maybe some truth to it?? Plus adds to the flavor and creaminess.) Tossed in two pork chop sized ham slices (thick peices) Once the pot came to a boil, I reduced the heat and covered, stirring occasionally. About 11 am (or two hours later) I added 2 more cups of water..(you have to watch the water on the stove top) Removed the Toms, garlic, potato and ham. Removed the skin on the tom. Mashed the garlic, tom and potato, returned to the pot. Flaked the ham apart and returned to the pot, adding the parsley at this time. mixed well. Re-covered, and simmered about a half hour and was done. Very good. Better than my mom used to make. =)

I REALLY liked this recipe!! I did have to make a few changes - I had to halve the recipe as I have a small crockpot, and I couldn't find smoked ham, so I used one good sized ham steak and I didn't have a sweet onion, so I used a good sized slice of regular onion. I had some fresh spinach to use up, and tore it into pieces and added it to the crockpot for the last half hour and I also left out the cloves because I only like them on hams!! I made a pan of cornbread and have so far gotten 2 dinners and 1 lunch and still have more in the fridge - This is GREAT, EASY and GOOD for the budget and will most positively be made again!! Thank you, Sue L, for a GREAT recipe!!
